Haven't we gone through all this? The two players have roughly equal records. You could argue Rooney has scored more crucial goals in the CL, but his failure to perform in big games at international level counts heavily against him. They are both top strikers, alongside Suarez and Aguero the best in the Premier league currently. We all have our personal opinions but to suggest things like I don't think any of the top 4 would be interested is ridiculous. There is not a top club in the world of football that won't be after van Persie should he fail to sign a new deal. Yeah, but which one do you think is a footballing god, and which one is plainly shite? Stop sitting on the fence.

Didn't Van Persie score against Barcelona in the CL as well? No, I don't think so. Even if he did he certainly hasn't scored goals, crucial goals, in the CL like Rooney has. Don't let the truth get in the way eh Baldy www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx-vO84DoAI2 minutes 40 seconds into the clip.

You're right Rooney is consistent....Consistently goes missing in the big matches.... Scored goals in CL semi final at Arsenal, CL quarter final at Chelsea and against Barcelona at Wembley in the CL final. I'm not sure how much bigger matches there are. Scored league winners against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. Oh and don't forget the spectacular bicycle kick in that 1-0 against City last year that wrapped up the title. Perhaps you will give us your definition of 'big matches'. Earlier in the thread baldy stated the defining factor was international football, so they will be big matches. So the REAL defining factor would be major international tournaments where only the best teams and players go and we all know how well darling Wayne has done at those. Biggest failure ever - fact! Keep digging Balders.

One of my daughters has her birthday party 12 to 2 (why do wives arrange these sort of things without giving football a thought ?) so what time I can get away and the traffic might see me running close to kick off. PM me and let me know where exactly you will be and, yes, I'll be up for a pint time permitting.

I think you will find he has a better tournament record than Messi. Thoughts ? Thoughts? Utter rubbish! in terms of goals its 4-3 to Rooney (edited). In terms of performances though he was poor in 2006 and absolutely diabolical in 2010 whereas Messi, while not as prolific as he is for Barca has always played well for the team with many assists. Messi was pretty good in 2006, was nominated for player of the tournament in 2010 and also had good Copa Americas in 2007 and 2011

Seems like the debate has come full circle
It's clear van Persie is the best striker in the Premiership but Rooney, Aguero et al are not too far behind.

Just reading the metro on the train this morning and there was an article where van Persie was described as the best player in Europe right now after Messi and Ronaldo. As the accolades come in as his incredible form continues, certain people are starting to look a bit silly....

I wonder when the similarities to van Basten will be made?
He is the best Dutch striker since van Basten and at the moment he is just as good....
Scores with his left foot, right foot, inside the box, outside. He's the most complete striker in the world

Just heard the stats. Van Persie is the second best striker in all of Europe in 2011 behind only Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of goals scored.

I'd argue is strikers are simply central but some can play wide. I'd then argue that Ronaldo is as good out wide as he is down the middle. Ronaldo is a forward, RVP is a striker. Nitpicky but whatev

Ronaldo is a forward, RVP is a striker. Nitpicky but whatev Surely the whole point of being 'complete' is that you can do everything - that's what being the most complete means, you excel at the most things. Ronaldo can play wide, central, can head, hold the ball up, hit it with either foot, has pace, scores goals. Van Persie lacks a little bit of pace and isn't truly two footed, something which stops him being the most 'complete' striker in my mind (but doesn't change the fact that he is bloody good)
