Always amazed by the differences in supporters views. Thought Ribs was our most dangerous player in the first half, could have had 3 assists after driving in dangerous quality crosses. Still great overall performance and healthy 3 points. Team shows great fitness and trickery. Just need a bit more composure at times and pass the ball quicker to exploit the spare man. hope we take this performance to Scunny next week. 👍 DSW was watching a different game again I think. It wasn't his on the ball actions which were good, it was his positioning and how flat footed he was at times when off the ball I was concerned with. 2nd half though you can't fault him.

Bought a Fulham supporting mate along to game today who knows his football. Told me at half time that if Clotet told our team to play more off the cuff Pompey were toast. Looked like he did! It was almost as if we spent the first half sussing out what they had got, analysed it, concluded Pompey were limited - and then destroyed them in round 2. Highly impressive team performance. Man of the match- by a mile - Ricardinho. Great atmosphere. One caveat. Pompey on that showing - are bottom six fodder.. Have to say, totally agree with that analysis. We played with brakes on first half, perhaps understandably. But second was a growing stranglehold, so that they just looked less and less and less likely to be able to compete, let alone score. In that period, I thought that lesson and ruffles were all-action. Huge energy and physicality. If they can keep that up, it'll serve us well in away games. Pompey were absolutely dire. They seemed to have no idea even how they wanted to play. As you say - and as I've tried tactfully to tell one of their posters on here - the standard in league 1 is just better than that. Even Cheltenham had a game plan! Hard to tell how good we are yet. Scunny will be a test of that, as Oldham and pompey haven't been. Still, putting away the weak sides is hardly a bad sign.

Pompey got the same harsh lesson we got last season. What got you out of L2 won't work in L1 against the good sides. I thought they were ponderous on the ball for large parts and one dimensional - crosses to far post or long balls for the 23 on the 2nd ball. We got caught at times, but overall they lack the quality to get out the league upwards right now. From where I was, Pittman's goal was rightly disallowed - massive push on Williamson and unsubtle. He was largely ineffective once he worked out he couldn't bully the CBs but will get goals.
As for us, the team looks like it has really kicked on from last season. We have a lot of work to do if we are to go up, but Pompey were chasing shadows at times. It's clear a lot of graft has taken place on the training pitch and our work rate will both win and lose games this season. The ability to bring on pace from the bench is what did them in. We made Pompey work hard and took advantage in the last 25 mins. The patterns of play were the most obvious kick on from last season in that there was usually more than option there and we used different ones.
Gino had a lovely cameo and his post match interview contained the right amount of git in it. There will some more lows, but it's clear what Pep wants and the sort of style we will have this season. On a small sample, things bode well.

Absolutely agree Charlie...when we started playing with energy, physicality and also some urgency, things happened for us. Pompey were poor and I thought we flattered them in the first half. Really liked the look of Ricardinho...thought he played some really intelligent football, but also had the rub of the green a couple of times early on too...Ribs looked a different player, Williamson and Nelson were composed and commanding, ruffs and lego great when they upped the ante..Thomas ran and ran and deserved his goal and Marvellous was quick and classy.....Henry is a v good player, just not convinced he's and out and out wide man..!

Chatted to a couple of Pompey fans in a pub after, they are still going up and could easily have won apparently, must of watched another game as we were comfortably better.
They offered little going forward, wish we could play them every week.

Jack Payne for me. Break the bank and sign him. Well, if Darryl's prepared to spend £800K on GvK, then you do wonder...

I thought Pompey just shaded the first half, but I think that had more to do with our game plan to sit deep than their ability to carve open genuine chances. They rarely troubled Eastwood and it was a push by Pittman so their goal was rightly disallowed. Second half we destroyed them and made them look ordinary at best. Thought their fans were noisy in the first half but hate that play up Pompey chant, and the embarrassingly bad "stand up in your family stand" chant. They were silent in the second half. They have a big time Charlie attitude as well which is surprising seeing as they spent the last four seasons in the basement league. The best team won, on that performance we could be up there and Pompey will be mid table at best.

Always a good sign when you hardly notice the ref, even though he did get subbed, in fairness it looked a fairly easy match to officiate but they both did well.
No bookings to either side either.

I couldn't understand all the negativity pre game with people saying "i'd settle for a draw now" WTF you go to watch a game hoping for a draw ?
Pompey are a newly promoted team,if we have ambitions of the play offs (or better)you have beat all the newly promoted teams.
With a bit more nous in and around the box (Obika smashing it instead of picking his spot) we could have had more.
I thought Williamson was immense, just doing they simple things you want from your centre half, head, tackle, kick. How many times in the past few years against Crawley,Barnet,AFC and other long ball teams have we been missing just such a centre half.

Thought Williamson was superb yesterday. Marshalled the defence, and kept calm heads. A masterclass in how to keep it simple. No showboating - just great simple stuff. A class and experienced act.

What a really enjoyable game to watch yesterday great atmosphere a good all round team performance and some very good individual performances. My man of the match for a very assured debut always looking comfortable on the ball and very good distribution has to be Ricardinho.

Totally agree, not just the defence either. The ball went out for a goal kick to us he marched up the pitch waving his arms telling Thomas what he should have done and where he should have been. Great leadership from someone in his second game not afraid to tell it how it is to other players

A cruyff turning centre half... sounds familiar.
I think Williamson is probably doing a good job of busting the myth of the great, talented Chey Dunkley. This is what a top L1 centre half looks like and is what you need if you have genuine aspirations of being up there. Not just in terms of his technical ability but his organisation and leadership qualities. Dunkley was a little baby who used to sulk and strop about every time he made a mistake, which was actually quite often. Williamson takes things by the scruff of the neck and sorts it all out while also playing his own game.
Night and day.

Great game and a vastly improved performance compared to Tuesday. What a difference Williamson is in the team, but the lack of back up (Martin) isn't good enough so we definitely need additional cover there. MOTM was Ricardinho, but again no real cover so need another one there too. Also feel we need a creative player in the middle, especially now that Pekalski seems to be out for a while. Oh and another up top, but the Thomas/Obika combination seems to be working.
Additionally, I thought Hall made the difference when he came on. Not sure why Henry is getting the call in front of him other than possibly physicality which Faz mentioned to me Wednesday night, but Hall offers so much more.
Having said that, I feel more optimistic after yesterday's performance compared to Tuesday, but won't get carried away yet.

I would say that was the perfect game. Suss them out without playing that well the exploit them second half. We haven't connected fully yet but once we do then wow! I would say Ribs was our weak spot today in the first half. I would say that which is coming out of your bottom is just talk.
You must be a Baldockophant
Ribs had a solid 90 mins. In fact If Williamson hadn't been so good I would have given either him or Ric. MOM for their all round effort.
Gino looked like he can only get better as I thought he was carrying a bit of timber .

Having said that, I feel more optimistic after yesterday's performance compared to Tuesday, but won't get carried away yet. Have to agree with most of this. Williamson' experience and presence is a real asset. He will help Nelson keep his shape and build on his strengths. Also believe, whilst we have bundles of energy to track and close down players, we lack guile and a range of passing in midfield. Suspect we'll still be looking for an experienced ball player to add to our improving squad. Henry is probably starting because he keeps the shape well and contributes in both attacking and defensive play. Hall is talented and exciting but currently may be considered more of a maverick. Having both is a real bonus for us. Our strength off the bench is impressive in this league.

I agree about Henry starting because he keeps the shape and keeps things ticking over. He's a good player and will improve.
I like the fact that we are able to keep things tight and then blow teams away in the last twenty minutes with our pace and power off the bench.
We probably will need a bit more creativity in midfield at times (at home) this season, but Ledson and Ruffels offer is a really solid platform to build from.
I wonder if we'll sign another midfielder now that Pekalski is out...?

Gino reminded me of Romario when he swaggered through on goal. Low centre of gravity, barrel chested and a big backside. And of course the arrogant finish!
