Forgot how good it feels to wake up on a Sunday morning after an Oxford win... A few thoughts from yesterday. Although never really being tested, Eastwood has a solid game. He had to deal with a lot of high balls into a crowded box and dealt with them comfortably. Nelson and Williamson were both solid and that looks like as though a good partnership could emerge which is even more important now that it seems Raglan may be out for some time. Thought Ribeiro struggled with Oldham's direct approach in the first half and seemed to get caught flat-footed a couple of times but grew into the game. In the middle Ledson and Ruffels were solid, giving Payne (wow..) the freedom to roam and create. Henry was quietly effective. He doesn't possess the most pace but he was effective and put in several very decent crosses. The only concern (more so from the first half) was that because Payne likes to roam he was often very deep in possession, this meant that Thomas was very isolated up top and made it difficult to break. Ratings: Eastwood 7, Ribeiro 6, Nelson 8, Williamson 8, Johnson 7, Henry 7, Ruffels 8, Ledson 8, Rothwell 6, Payne 9, Thomas 8 (Obika 7, Carroll NA) Overall a very professional performance and a deserved 3 points. Glad we have got them out of the way now rather than on a Tuesday night in January. Agree with this to some extent other than I do agree with potters earlier post...I thought Ribs had an excellent game as did the whole back 4. He's a very intelligent footballer and its obvious watching him he's been comfortable at a higher level. I don't think you are ever going to see him throwing himself about and we probably wont see the best of him until his attacking game comes into play at home. I would give all the back four 7.5 and Eastwood only an average 5 because he had bugger all to do for the most part. Henrys game passed me by to be honest and I could only give him a 5 too. Would have liked to have seen Hall start in preference.
Payne was excellent and I rated him 8, however the Oldham players never really got to grips with him during the game and as you say better teams would probably work out earlier that he likes to drive forward from deep and he will have to be careful he's not dispossessed and we are exposed. If he plays like that every week there's a danger of a early recall so I suggest we dumb down his performances down a bit to average
I don't think Oldham were as bad as some make out though and we should be given a bit more credit. At times they bossed the midfield but then strangely played to our strengths at the back with the old Eddy Waring. !! To be blunt they didn't seem to be sharp enough or ready to start the season and didn't really have a game plan other than " av it" . A couple of their midfielders were getting increasingly frustrated as the game developed. Must be pleased with their Keeper though as he made several fine saves including a quite brilliant stop from Payne. Shame about the crowd..last time I went to Boundary Park there was about 12,000 there and it was quite an atmosphere.
Personally I really hope that Pep makes wholesale changes for the Mickey Mouse Water Buffalo Cup on Tuesday and rests the majority of yesterdays team..there were one or two flagging bodies late on, ( as to be expected early season) and its in potentially acrimonious local clashes like this that silly injuries are collected.
One final thing can anyone tell me why there is an Owl on the Oldham club badge ?? when their nickname is the Latics.. ??
PS the M6 has been like that for a year ..
It's league cup Tuesday isn't it?

We did. Its just that it goes a lot further in the North West, and he is near his family and mates. Just out of curiosity how do you know we matched what Fleetwood are paying him ? P.S.He's from Liverpool not Blackpool,Fleetwood is hardly on the banks of the Mersey. We don't know that for sure. But what we do know for sure is that he hated it down here and that was the reason for seeking a club closer to home, not money. Comes from conversations he had with fans after matches.

First 11 needs as much competitive playing time together as they can get this early in the season. This season use the tinpot trophy to give fringe players game time.

That's going on the assumption that yesterday's squad was our first 11, which it wasn't as Ricardinho will Definitely start

Am I the only person who though Henry was brilliant yesterday?
His distribution was spot on, most of the attacks were started from him, and he got stuck in too.
Great signing.

An ex work colleague (Oldham fan) was there. He just texted me.... "You are a class outfit. Easily top ten L1. Probably more. Henry, Williamson, Payne your three best players." He also thinks Oldham will go down!

I think Eastwood should get an 8, he pulled off the game changing save from Davis, he also had to deal with a lot of crosses that were not easy after coming back from his injury. He still looks to be on the mend and we might have to use him sparingly to protect him.
