Shame we couldn't match what Fleetwood were offering We did. Its just that it goes a lot further in the North West, and he is near his family and mates. Just out of curiosity how do you know we matched what Fleetwood are paying him ? P.S.He's from Liverpool not Blackpool,Fleetwood is hardly on the banks of the Mersey.

Can we build our team around a loanee? A healthy Payne will see us bang up there this season if we put the right pieces around him. Unbelievable performance.

Thought Payne, Nelson, Williamson stood out. Nelson and Williamson has the potential to be a very strong partnership. Williamson practically played the first half for Johnson, talking to him and pulling him in position, he also wasn't afraid to bollock him when he was sloppy which is great to see. His experience could be invaluable.

0-3 Thomas 2 in frst half and Ruffels early in seconds - not bad for a six pointer. COYY. Is it being streamed anywhere at all apart from ifollow? Not jackpot, but you get a small prize for that...fidget spinner or something.

In Oldham, the words 'hot dog stand' have an ironic meaning, Mr Earp. Put it this way, dogs don't hang around for very long. It was there, it just f*cked off before anyone noticed!

Lots of plus points today, still rusty and sure they will get better and better...
Oldham sadly disappointing and in another relegation battle, looked clueless up front...
Jack looked a class apart from anyone on the pitch and he alone deserves loads of praise. Looks a great signing and will score loads.
How can you only have just over 4000 for your first game at home, add to that we took a thousand.. poor show Oldham

First off, the defence was as tight as a drum.
Oldham played howitzer second ball stuff all game but we were ready for them. Eastwood did not have a shot to save.
We gave away loads of free kicks and sometimes got outmuscled, especially in midfield but we always had numbers back.
Thought Ribeiro was pick of the bunch; highly mobile and positionally sound. Williamson organised and mopped up splendidly.
Payne is too good for L1 on that showing.
Our style has changed; high press, short passing, hunt in packs.
Sometimes left alarming gaps on flanks but Oldham play so one dimensional it was no problem. Thomas is a wily character: comes alive when he needs to.
Think he will always struggle to last 90. Obika impressed me. A real unit who played the lone striker role well.
Oldham were pretty poor and will struggle. But high marks to Pep for his tactics; he did his homework.
Amazing turnout by fans and good noise. Not a fan of smoke bombs; leave them at home please!

If we can keep Williamson fit and on the pitch on a regular basis he will be a valuable addition. He didn't look overly mobile but did a hell of a job organising us defensively. Inside the first twenty minutes he'd cleverly thwarted a number of Oldham 'attacks' (i.e. aimless lumps forward trying to win second ball or free kicks) with a crafty nudge in the back or unseen tug of the shirt. Exactly the kind of know-how we didn't have when the earnest, too nice for his own good Dunkley partnered Nelson.
Payne looks a hell of a player at this level too. Deceptively tough, quick feet, Tevez-esque dribbling style, and can pick a pass. I think we're all feeling a lot less sore about losing Maguire after that performance
Ironically our worst player on the day was poor Marv. He had a shocking first half (one swashbuckling run aside), and just looks so uncomfortable at left back. Ricardinho needs to get in shape pronto!
All in all an impressive victory though. We didn't win many of those matches last season, and made them look entirely ordinary. Made all the more impressive given that fact that they had a dream ref for their style of play. Up until he gave Obika a telling off for absolutely nothing ten seconds after he came on I was convinced he'd left his whistle at home. Gave absolutely nothing...despite the fact that their team consists entirely of roving thugs who at times were quite literally AIMING for our players rather than the ball with elbows, studs, kicks, swats, punches. No wonder their fans sat in complete silence all afternoon. Imaging paying to watch that shower all season...

Tried watching on ifollow, very poor, keeps dropping out, breaking up. , freezing etc. Better than nothing but only just, switched to commentary at halftime, shut down for all halftime unable to listen to fans interviews etc. Needs a total rethink about format. What I did see impressed me, Payne really worked hard and looks class. Our defence mostly looked solid and sometimes no nonsense clear it at all costs, great. Midfield I thought was effective but still needs time to gel, sometimes passes across field were loose, but ambitious but as understanding grows will become very effective. Up front it was an effective away performance, as a lone striker Thomas did well and Obika showed hie is also able to fulfil this role ok. I would like to see a striker signed who matches the class of the rest of the team, which would give us a serious promotion challenging side.

Just a few random notes on yesterday. Even Oldham fans were commenting that Payne was a class act - too good for league 1. He's a little fella but he just kept on driving us forward. On the face of it he is a fine loan signing. Our other newbie Henry had a quiet game. I was expecting more to be honest but he didn't have the influence I hoped for. Obika. Well, he just looked a little er, languid. Again maybe I am being a bit critical here, but he looked a bit immobile? Williamson and Nelson were very good together and looked very assured at the back. Mighty marv is definitely needed further forward. Second half he just tore into them at will. At times, he looks like he is the real deal and I feel that we are very lucky to have a player like him here. All in all a good away win but for all you others who went.... that f*cking M6 is an never ending disgrace of a road. When the f*ck will it ever be done?

Forgot how good it feels to wake up on a Sunday morning after an Oxford win...
A few thoughts from yesterday. Although never really being tested, Eastwood has a solid game. He had to deal with a lot of high balls into a crowded box and dealt with them comfortably. Nelson and Williamson were both solid and that looks like as though a good partnership could emerge which is even more important now that it seems Raglan may be out for some time. Thought Ribeiro struggled with Oldham's direct approach in the first half and seemed to get caught flat-footed a couple of times but grew into the game.
In the middle Ledson and Ruffels were solid, giving Payne (wow..) the freedom to roam and create. Henry was quietly effective. He doesn't possess the most pace but he was effective and put in several very decent crosses. The only concern (more so from the first half) was that because Payne likes to roam he was often very deep in possession, this meant that Thomas was very isolated up top and made it difficult to break.
Ratings: Eastwood 7, Ribeiro 6, Nelson 8, Williamson 8, Johnson 7, Henry 7, Ruffels 8, Ledson 8, Rothwell 6, Payne 9, Thomas 8 (Obika 7, Carroll NA)
Overall a very professional performance and a deserved 3 points. Glad we have got them out of the way now rather than on a Tuesday night in January.

Glad we have got them out of the way now rather than on a Tuesday night in January. Agree with this to some extent other than I do agree with potters earlier post...I thought Ribs had an excellent game as did the whole back 4. He's a very intelligent footballer and its obvious watching him he's been comfortable at a higher level. I don't think you are ever going to see him throwing himself about and we probably wont see the best of him until his attacking game comes into play at home. I would give all the back four 7.5 and Eastwood only an average 5 because he had bugger all to do for the most part. Henrys game passed me by to be honest and I could only give him a 5 too. Would have liked to have seen Hall start in preference.
Payne was excellent and I rated him 8, however the Oldham players never really got to grips with him during the game and as you say better teams would probably work out earlier that he likes to drive forward from deep and he will have to be careful he's not dispossessed and we are exposed. If he plays like that every week there's a danger of a early recall so I suggest we dumb down his performances down a bit to average
I don't think Oldham were as bad as some make out though and we should be given a bit more credit. At times they bossed the midfield but then strangely played to our strengths at the back with the old Eddy Waring. !! To be blunt they didn't seem to be sharp enough or ready to start the season and didn't really have a game plan other than " av it" . A couple of their midfielders were getting increasingly frustrated as the game developed. Must be pleased with their Keeper though as he made several fine saves including a quite brilliant stop from Payne. Shame about the crowd..last time I went to Boundary Park there was about 12,000 there and it was quite an atmosphere.
Personally I really hope that Pep makes wholesale changes for the Mickey Mouse Water Buffalo Cup on Tuesday and rests the majority of yesterdays team..there were one or two flagging bodies late on, ( as to be expected early season) and its in potentially acrimonious local clashes like this that silly injuries are collected.
One final thing can anyone tell me why there is an Owl on the Oldham club badge ?? when their nickname is the Latics.. ??
PS the M6 has been like that for a year ..

All in all a good away win but for all you others who went.... that f*cking M6 is an never ending disgrace of a road. When the f*ck will it ever be done? It seems the road works on the M6 at Knutsford have been going on for more than 2 years and completion still looks years away - a major problem. On to the match itself - we won that in second gear. Oldham offered precious little apart from endless big diagonals to Davies and Amadi-Holloway. Not seen any pre-season but surprised at how big Williamson is and impressed with his no nonsense approach. He is streetwise! He looks an improvement on Dunkley and having not seen Ribeiro before, he is good all round fullback and offers more than Edwards. Jack Payne was the stand out player - always looking to get on the ball and pull the strings. Love the way Jack puts his left foot on the top of the ball and rolls it with his studs. Class indeed - a special player. Henry, whilst not hugely impressive uses the ball well and will be an asset. Good footballer. Ruffs and Lego did a lot of mopping up and used the ball well - lots of short passing. All in all another away day victory and plenty of encouraging signs.
