I can only suspect it is all about money in the first instance and a promise to replace Ritchie when he is sold in the Summer.
Gutted.

I guess it's also possible that as the loan is until the end of the season a loan fee may have been paid for Holmes that we are unprepared to pay.
But more than anything this highlights the vulnerable position the club can be in when it does have loan players who have been very important to the team.
In the case of Hall and Holmes, the two clearest examples of productive loans for us this season, they were brought in to fulfil a specific role that had not been met by any other player. What we need to do is get the balance of the squad right in the summer so we're less vulnerable in that regard.

Good points but we've been very unlucky with injuries this season which is very hard to plan for.

I am gutted by this news. Really hoped he would stay for the season, but in reality he is playing for his future and if he does well there he will more than likely be playing league 1 football next season.

He has sold his ass to Dik Anio! It's possible he didn't rate Oxford Utd and opted for the chance of impressing at the potential league champions. Perhaps we should just move on.

I think from comments he's made he clearly does rate Oxford United. I think it's more to do with a view to next season and probably extra cash they've thrown his way. Agreed that we should move on straight away and forget about this.

I just wish players would be more honest with the fans. This is clearly about money and I have no issue with that. But when then join we have to hear about facilities, fanbase, stadium etc etc etc. Just tell us the truth, you came because we paid you on more favourable terms.
Honourable mention to James Constable, a decent man who didn't b*llshit the fans or jump for an extra fruit salad a week.

Good post by surbitonyellow
Objectively there were pluses and minus for him staying or going. Only he can make that decision. Unlike Constable it didn’t go our way. I thank Holmes for his efforts and best of luck to him.
The questions are now for the club:
What kind of deal were we offering and did we stall trying to work around the 93 days loan rule?
Are we to view Morgan as his replacement or will we be after another player?
Did Agent Kerrouche get to him? [gallows humour]
Even when we get good players in on loan it doesn’t work out for us – I hate the loan system. It is hard not to be deflated by the news. However the focus must be on the players who are here.

Yes, its probably another notch on Beano's bed post in terms of his popularity among OUFC fans. Swindon, because of their current position, Wembley beckoning and salaries they can pay are no doubt an attractive proposition to players at the minute and it shows Beano up in an even greater light that he could comfortably resist them while others seem to be clamouring to go there.

The loan system is the same for all teams to use and abuse, we just dont seem to pull many rabbits out of the hat when going into the market, several other teams seem to be able to use contacts at premier clubs to cherry pick the youngsters with a future, we seem to have contacts at sheff utd, chesterfield and donny that dump their sh ite on us, holmes going to the scum is another harsh wake up call of excactly where we stand.

Di Canio has been absolutely desperate to get one over us in the transfer market for some time now, so well done to him. It will now serve Holmes right if he has to spend a fair bit of the remainder of the season on the bench.

Let's see, he says he doesn't want to leave Oxford unless it's for a bigger club. The he joins the Scum! Hows that for a contradiction in terms! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D And of course money had absolutely nothing to do with it.

He still gets paid the same by Southampton no matter which club he is on loan with - his contract is with them. we were paying Southampton a percentage of his wages. Swindon have clearly come in and offered a bigger percentage than we could/wanted to pay, plus maybe a loan fee. Southampton are the ones that have accepted the offer.

It can only be about money if that lot are paying him more than Southampton though can't it?
Can a club taking a player on loan actually pay him more than the parent club is paying him??

Money will come into it for Southampton. It's not just about the player. KT has said it's a commercial decision for them and we can't afford to pay most of his wages. KT also said we could not offer him a contract at the sort of level he is on!

Pain in the arse, but to be honest, not a surprise. Would Di Canio had gone for him if they'd have done the double over us?
