That's Marv. Start off strong, begin to wilt and eventually settle into a pattern of one great game followed by three or four average and ineffective ones. But he'll get away with it because "he's clearly got ability" and "bloody hell he can't half motor when he gets going" etc. He will never be consistent - he doesn't have the mentality and temperament for that. # He'd still get in our first XI and be one of our best players if he was here though...

He started off slowly with us and got better and better? He only tailed off at the end when it was clear he had a better offer and didnt want to get injured and miss out on his payday.

..... every fourth match. Little bit of revisionism going on here methinks! Please, do reel off a list of matches where Johnson was the match winner. Name me multiple games where he was the catalyst that drove us on almost singlehandedly? THAT is the mark of a truly quality player. Where are the games you look back on and go "Cor, it was all about Marv that day. He ran the show." Good pace, sure. Dangerous crossing ability, totally. Scored a couple of crackers, undoubtedly. But a very good player this alone does not make. He lacked consistency and rarely bossed it to the point where he was the best player on the pitch. Lundstram had games like those, albeit almost exclusively in League Two. Maguire had those. Roofe had those. It's not 'revisionism' at all, it's genuine opinion. Would I like to have a fit and interested Marvin Johnson? Of course I would. Decent player; occasionally very good one. At this level especially, really good option who will four or five times per season have a seriously good game and score some peaches along the way. But a player who is the best player on the pitch even semi-frequently? He's never been that. And I doubt he will be that at the next level up. Happy with the money and the attitude that the current squad seems to have compared to him.

Agree, at the end of the day we got a very good deal for him and I think we don't miss him, I think our biggest asset this season is the players work effort and passion something Johnson lacked.

I resent the fact that he went on strike for my team to get his move.
But to say he’s just some show pony who rarely performed on the pitch is simply ludicrous.
There are not many players like Johnson in L1 and no wonder he went for a hefty transfer fee.

At the end of the day a championship club decided he was worth £2.5m
Why? Because he was clearly one of our best players at the time and had the quality.
If he was still here he'd be considered one of our best assets, one of our best players, and would be in the team every week.
I can't see how anyone could argue with that

Interesting that you compare unfavourable with Roofe, who i think many of us found very frustrating that he didnt boss games enough or consistently enough given his considerable talent. Exactly the thing you accuse Marvin of. And also very unfair that you are criticising his goal output with what was then our main strikers and set piece takers, when Marvin played most of the season at left back!

Playing for the U21’s in the Checkatrade Trophy rather than the reserves in the Carabao Cup. Looks like he’s on the naughty step.

It's probably a bit sad that i'm as happy about that as I am, but whatever

I agree it was the right deal but (and it’s a big one) where did the 2.5 million go? I don’t see it in our current team? The wheels have come off of our recruitment. We’ve signed a bunch of average players at best. Fingers crossed we get back on track in January. My feeling is DE wants to sell and isn’t going to invest further. To be fair it would be just wasted cash because he wouldn’t get it back.

I’d also rather we didn’t just waste money and buy any old player.

To be fair it would be just wasted cash because he wouldn’t get it back. If Daryl Eales bought Striker A for £2m then shortly after sold the club... ...he’d just charge the investor £2m more. Our players would be listed as assets, and the price quoted would reflect that. Of course he’d get any money outlaid back. Surely...?

It’s a risk though to him as to whether someone will want to match that inflated price for the club - particularly if they don’t perform over the short to midterm (c.f. Hemmings).

Well I’d agree more of a “complication” than a “risk” but I just don’t buy that this represents a plausible reason for a 180-degree about-turn from Daryl.

Marcus Tavernier came into the team and has played well, leaving Johnson on the bench and a bit part player. I saw a snippet of the Boro game yesterday and Johnson took an appalling corner.

But in the Johnson case, the Club paid say £300k and at the Sartori takeover time value could be anywhere from 500k to £2milllion (plucking figures out of the air), so Eales says the price to buy me out is £2million higher if Johnson still an OUFC player. But Sartori says for instance 750k. That’s a big difference and perhaps Eales then thinks well I’ll sell him for £1.5 million and at least I know where I am then.

Wait... I thought it was just sour grapes / selective memory that Marvin Johnson wasn't a world beater? I thought it was just bitterness that people said they remembered how even at L1 level he never won games singlehandedly, or put together runs of 3, 4, 5 matches where he was consistently one of the best players on the pitch? I thought he was real top quality?
Oh, and it wasn't 2.5m they paid for him, it was 3m by the time the add-ons and future payments are factored in. Absolutely fantastic business from an OUFC perspective.
Good luck, Boro. He's yours now!

The only slight concern for me is that neither Johnson or Roofe (to a lesser extent) have exactly set the world alight. Hope it doesn’t reduce our future sale fees. At least COD is/was doing the business and Lunny now has the chance to do the same.
