Very good player who will definitely be missed on the pitch, perhaps not consistent enough, but still our best wife player IMO. Good move from a business point of view as well. Decent fee for a player not getting any younger and who didn't want to be here. His exit does leave a bit of a sour taste in the mouth but I hope he does well for Boro, as I imagine we will have a sell on clause and a promotion bonus payment included in the deal. Player leaves and the personal life rumours start flying around. Come on, we're better than this. Proof please.

I don't believe that for a single second, Roofe conducted himself immaculately as far as I am aware. Johnson however, who knows, it's clear he saw himself playing at a higher level and who are we to stop him, especially as we got a seven figure profit from him. We'll never know if he was legitimately injured, never know if his performance in the last games was just an off-day, carrying an injury or what. Some of the comments here are a bit embarrassing to be honest. Thanks Marvin for the year in yellow, most talented player we've had on our books for a while, blew hot and cold, drifted in and out. A fair deal for us and all concerned. Now we move on to incoming players. I think a loan from a higher club and that's probably it...don't see the cash being splashed, especially with the sell on and the possibility that the payment for MJ will be made in stages by Boro. To be fair, that is just my personal recollection, that he wasn't putting himself around like he used to, which at the time I put down to injury/fatigue. But I'm rarely at games so happy to be corrected. I noticed a similar thing for about a month or so where he suddenly became a little selfish and not quite so happy to play out wide or whatever. I don't blame him for it at all, nor look on him negatively as a consequence as he handled himself well in his time here.

Always nice when a player thanks the fans, rather than just saying he wished he had gone to the championship last summer.

It isn't held against players, it's understandable that they don't want to risk an avoidable injury which could jeopardise their move. That's considered the 'right way' to wind down your time at a club if you're stepping up a level.

Even though I wouldn't defend his attitude or actions I would suspect that Johnson probably has not earned a lot of money from his career so far so probably feels that at 26 time is running out. Leaves a sour taste though and I'm glad it's over. Hope he fails even though there are add ons.

That statement is football code for, 'Johnson's behaviour means has burned his bridges with the club, and has refused to train or play properly, and for the sake of morale had to go. This isn't the fault of Boro.' I have seen many such statements before - one for a player who refused to run in any training sessions the week before he was sold, to make a point. Seriously? Presumably this all gets round the various clubs though? I guess that it appears that Marvin has done something similar twice 'allegedly' and that hasn't stopped Middlesbrough spending all of that money on him though. Precisely...
No club is going to sign a player who could potentially be a habitual trouble maker and less than genuine...all these conspiracy theories make me laugh...worse than Al Fayed trying to pin Diana's death on Her Majesty the Queen.
Quite simply The club put Johnson on Gardening leave when the first offer came in and that's the simple truth of it. All they were doing was holding out for the best offer whilst protecting his fitness. The club played a good hand and if Borough had any suspicions at all that he was disruptive they would have dropped the deal like a stone.
Johnson would have left everything with his agent, but of course he was keen to move on..he came into the professional football late in life and has always been ambitious.
I'm saddened he's not with us but ultimately he was a very shrewd investment by Eales and that's the end of it.
Onwards and Upwards.

We've made a few quid on him and he's earning more money and playing at a higher level for a good club, good business all round methinks.

Boro fan here, I actually joined this forum around the time of our cup game against the yellows last season as I like to hear views from 'the other side' so to speak. Understandably I'm paying particular attention to this thread.
I'm in 2 minds personally about whether Johnson will fare well for us; on one hand the way we now set up seems to favour his style as we don't play with any out and out wingers, instead when defending we have 2 defensive midfielders that drop into the defence creating a more compact wall, when attacking our fullbacks push forward rapidly whilst one of our DM drops back into a sweeper role, this in particular may suit Marvin's attributes?
Therefore our fullbacks don't defend as much but generally have to be rapid at attacking to support Bamford, Assombalonga and Gestede as we usually play with 3 strikers that rotate to drag the opposing defence all over. Admittedly we have to wait for the team to 'gel' properly as half the personel are new to each other and the style is quite different to that under Karanka.
On the other hand there is the question marks over his application that your fans views seem to raise, he seems to be your equivalent of a player we had called Gaston Ramirez, brilliant when he could be bothered. Though thankfully we did at least make a sackload of cash on his departure too.
I'd be very grateful for any insight you guys could give.

On his day he's brilliant, electric pace , thunder bolt of a shot and ability to beat his man. He's not a left back or wing back by any stretch of the imagination. He will get found out easily in the champ in that position as he did constantly at this level. Even in his best position he is one of those players who will be a star one game and unnoticeable for the next 2/3. Good player at this level, personally think championship might be a step to much for him. And overall I'd be disappointed if we had just paid £3m for him

IMO - He will do very well for Boro, whether he plays at wingback or left midfield. He is very creative when he puts his mind into it. I believe that he never really wanted to play for Oxford but wanted to force a move out of Scotland so that he could then engineer a move higher up the pyramid in England. He is very strong, quick and has excellent feet. He has a very good shot on him and puts a mean cross in, usually low and hard into the 6 yard box. We never saw enough of this but I truly believe that he will be happy to play at Championship level and will apply himself to become a very good championship player under Garry Monk.

Do we we assume that he didn't really want to be here? I think we can safely assume that Mapp's integrity and humility wasn't take on by all players. Johnosn's failing to acknowledge his time at and gratitude to Oxford comes across as self centred and crass. Having just listened to him on Radox we were clearly a stepping stone. Compare his departure with that of Baldock, Roofe and others......

Physical ability of a top level Premier League player, footballing brain of a rugby player. He's not a left back, so I'd be worried if that's where you've signed him to play. However, if you play him as an out and out winger and give him the freedom to run with the ball, shoot, cross, etc. he'll be a good asset.

If Boro fail to make the premiership he might throw a paddy and look to move on. On his day he was special, and I think with Monk and many good players around him the fans might see more of that. I'm not disappointed he's gone as I think we need strengthening in other areas, and can only do that by selling Johnson. The only problem we have now is that we might be paying inflated prices for new players. I've heard Coventry wanted £1.5m for their target man. Motherwell want far more than £450K for their midfielder..although if he's half as good as suggested he might be a snip

I wouldn't take too much notice over his 'application' - his half hearted (Or worse) displays came about when he knew that Championship clubs were interested and he lost interest and motivation. Admittedly, this doesn't reflect too well on the player, but such is the way of the football world, what with pushy agents and filthy lucre. He's very athletic and pacey, loves to run at defences directly with the ball at his feet, can't remember him swapping wings much if at all for us, might be a useful attribute. Will score some spectacular goals for you, but not that prolific. Play him at left back at your peril Cap'n Haddock!!

Given some of the replies, he seems to be another player in the mold of Adama Traore who plays for us. Is an absolute dribble monster and can ghost past 3 or 4 opposing players with ease. He'll either dart round every single one with the ball glued to his foot or run through them as he's built like a speeding brick shithouse. Pace to burn; accelerates quicker than any footballer I've ever seen, he can outsprint every single player in the champo and virtually every player in the Prem for that mattter, proven none more so than when he left Hector Bellerin of Arsenal (previously acknowledged as the top flight's No.1 speed merchant) in his wake last season. However his positioning is absolutely awful. Footballing brain needs serious work, if improvement is possible at all. Final ball skills improving, but still not brilliant.
Indeed our supporters have commented that the best use for him would be simply to get the ball in our half and run through the opposition's entire side, with one directive; DO NOT PASS. Just run and run, sprinting past, dribbling around or letting them bounce off you for any player that gets in your way. Carry on running right into the other side's goal single-handed, with ball.
It seems that Marvin is another player of this kind, almost as fast, although perhaps with a better end product?

Having seen traore on a few occasions, johnson isn't even close to being his quality. Johnson will give you 10mins per game of the potential superstar he could be but more often than not the game will pass him by. That being said we did not play him in his natural position last year so no doubt that hindered his performance. He also has one hell of a shot from distance in him.

Fast, yes and has a few tricks in his book, but more likely to knock it past someone into space and run first to the ball. Hell of a cross and shot with his left. Should give you many assists and goals if played correctly! But his style is to seek a move, so as soon as any interest come from the Premier, you may as well kiss him goodbye or give the guy what he deserves and let him rot with the kids if he starts his antics for the 3rd (third) time! Everything he says in his interview about MFC will be boloks!

First couple of games I was very impressed, he put in some good crosses, was quick and tracked back. He lacked a lot of confidence when he started and we never really saw him going for goal or cutting inside.
When he did he did it well and added a lot to the team, unfortunately he didn't do it much at all. Certainly not bitter. Players come and go and if doesn't bother me like some on here. Will he cut it in the championship?? Based on probably 80% of his time here then I doubt it.
If, on the other hand he takes to the Championship (as it's his preferred level) then he'll do well. He's definitely not a left back or wing back that's for certain. He's almost non existent in a defensive role.
He's gone about his two moves very poorly which must raise questions in terms of mentality and professionalism. If we got anything above £2M then I think that's some excellent business.
