I thought that Jack Midson had a very good first half yesterday. Our first goal came from his hard work and never say die attitude. He won nearly every header he went for and ran his socks off.
Constable should have been taken off not Midson. I dont know what Jack has to do to earn a run in the side. Imo he and Maclean in a 442 including Hackney and Potter would have seen us beat Rotherham comfitably.
Leaving Constable on yesterday with Craddock on the bench seemed foolish. If Craddock has a slight niggle then he should not have been on the bench.

Agree seems to me Wilder has somthing against him. Didnt even shake Midson's hand when he come off. Strange. Wilder didn't even praise him up for carrying on that got us our 1st goal.

I think it would be far to say that Jack and Wilder do not see eye-to-eye.

Midson did ok and did well for the goal but was not brilliant, Hackney who replaced him did well and put the ball in for the penalty and we won! I thought it was the right change to make. Constable did not have his best game but was still better than Midson IMO.

Really bored of this constant Midson love-in.
Why can't people just accept that he is an average League 2 squad player that will have some good games and some bad games for us.
Yesterday, he did alright and his one excellent bit of play produced an assist. Well done Jack.
The manager made his substitution choices and we won the game (by a smaller margin that it could or maybe should have been), against an automatic promotion challenger. No reason for discussion here as far as I'm concerned.

Hackney coming on changed the game for us. Sublime through ball for the penalty, looked lively, pacy, beat his man on both wings, created chances and had a couple of pop shots himself.
Jack did well for the first goal but the change was a very good one to make. On that form Hackney has to start.
We've got good attacking options and although I like Jack's wholeheartedness he's well down in the pecking order.
To have Craddock, Alfie, Sangarre, Payne and Hackney on the bench yesterday shows how much our squad's improved this season.

I thought he did ok but was not brilliant, and the reason he does'nt get a run in the team is because the other 3 are better players. Anyone who thinks that Midson should start ahead of Constable is an idiot but there again some people on this forum are.

Maybe I'm a biased Oxford fan but I think all four strikers are bloody brilliant and in turn add/give something different.
Ability wise I think Craddock/MacLean are probably the best players. Work rate you'd definitely say Constable and Midson. Finishing I'd personally argue Craddock and Midson (Others would say Beano instead of Mido) First touch would have to be Midson and Craddock *(Mido plucks some beauties out of the air!) Goals highly important factor has to be Constable and Craddock Passing, flair and class Craddock and MacLean Effect within formation MacLean and Craddock for me. Since Macca and Cradz have been upfront together we've looked deadly.

A couple of minutes before Midson was substituted I said to my brother that he looked knackered. Then he gave the ball away in midfield in a lacklustre attempt to keep it and Rotherham created a good chance from it and was promptly replaced. I don't know if he had taken a nock or had pulled something but slightly but he didn't look right to me. He created the first goal with some resiliant running/hurdling then supplied the a great ball for the opener. He was worth his place just for that but I don't teckon he would have put the defenders under the pressure that Beano did so I think it was fair enought that he came off.

Midson is a nice bloke, he tries hard, he runs around a lot but he's not a quality striker at this level. Constable (dreadful misses aside) Craddock certainly, MacLean all look more threatening. Even Hackney looked more likely to score. A few won headers doesn't justify Midson's place. But "Wilder has something against him"? Tosh.

We won that is all that matters I would leave the rest to Wilder As Beav says we have four damned good strikers at the club and that almost seems a first

This thread isnt about Midson at all. Its the only thing that paulayres could come up with to post yet another negative thread about the team or club. A sad man indeed. Many thanks for your support. The thread is about Midson and the way he is treated. Constable was very poor on Saturday and missed a hatfull of chances. Craddock a better player alround and our most expensive signing is left on the bench, while Beano can do no wrong. Hackney showed on Saturday how effective he can be, but when up against a good defence Beano is lacking. Jack Midson won most of his headers during the 1st half and was very disappointed about being taken off and I dont blame him.

If I remember rightly it wasn't so long ago that Constable was on the bench for a ferw games and Midson was starting... and one game aside didn't do enough to cement a starting position. I'd rather have the chances that Constable creates by his determination and chasing down, which he does far more than anyone else, and actually getting into scoring positions himself, than someone who wins a few headers.... mainly out wide against full backs. The substitution seemd perfectly fair to me and our play after it seemed to indicate it worked too.

You haven't got a clue if you genuinely think Midson carries more threat than Constable. Midson is decent but I'd describe Constable as a step up from just decent. Midson tends to live off a good display (Torquay) but then fails to follow it up. Constable is unlikely to go three games without finding the net whereas Midson will build everyones hopes up that we've struck gold only to disappoint in the next match or two. Yes, he did well to make the goal on Saturday but so what ? Beano has made countless goals too and people would just shrug that off as 'only to be expected' but when Midson does something special everybody is clamouring for him. In truth, he did little else on Saturday bar the assist for that first goal.

Craddock was injured. Beano has been left out on numerous occasions this year.
Why are you so anti Constable? Did you not celebrate any of the 65 goals in 123 appearances then? Has he in someway slighted you personally? The fact is that he is still our highest goalscorer this year and I would imagine that he will finish that way this year. Yep he misses chances. Could you name me a striker who doesn't? He gets into the positions and a goal to game percentage of 52% says that while he may miss he is likely to score. Add to that he terrific work ethic and general positivity on the pitch and I feel extremely happy to have him in the team.
Midson, nice bloke and I like him as a player but the stats are just not as good and nor is his effect on the whole team performance. He has a goals per appearance ratio of 22% (I realise that there are more subs appearances there). He just isn't as effective as the 3 other strikers). For instance how many times did Midson get into goal scoring position on Saturday? I can't remember it if he did.
You say he comes up short against good defences. Maybe he does, maybe he's perceived as such a threat that he gets special treatment. But I don't see any of the others waltzing through those defences to score oodles of goals. Do you? He is a player that relies on service and I suspect that when the opposition defending is good that you'll see the service also dries up.
Support the team paulayres, no matter who is in it.

They are all fighting for a limited number of spaces in the team. That competition is helping our drive up the table. Jack had an excellent game but he had played midweek and prior to that he had been sitting on the bench and probably did not have 90 minutes in his legs. But it was good to see him start and offer such a positive contribution. With Hackney coming in, we now look to have really rich options up front.

I thought it was the right decision. Midson had done exceptionally well for the goal but had offered little else other than winning a few headers.
Constable can normally get you a goal, his positioning and movement created his own two one-on-ones but that was after Midson had gone off but I suspect those incidents only aid the Midson should have not been replaced arguments.
Hackeny was very good when he came on, the decisions were spot on and we got three points.

Let alone the removal of JM also enabled the side to revert to 4-4-2 which saw MacLean slot up front and central for him to win his penalty.

Craddock a better player alround and our most expensive signing is left on the bench, while Beano can do no wrong. Hind-sight is always 20-20. Beano missed those chances after Jack had been taken off, so you can't use that as a reason for Beano to be substituted instead. If Midson had stayed on, would he have taken those chances? Would he even have even made those chances? At the time we were being exposed down the left as Tonkin wasn't getting any cover so Hackney came on. Once again, accusations fly around that whenever someone is out of the team it is because they've had a personal fall out with Wilder. This happened with Cole (since disproved) and now Midson. If Midson and the manager had a problem, why would he have even started yesterdays game? I think Jack Midson good player but I do not get these demands that he be first name on the team sheet.

Bloke behind me said Mids looked tired a few mins before coming off.
My question though is why play Mids in a midweek reserve match if his fitness isnt all there, and why take him off when your putting on a man who can cross the ball, and mids is the best header in the front line

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
jeez, I think people on here need to grow up a little
Just because Wilder doesn't start a bloke every week, subs him and doesn't shake his hand then he 'doesn't like him'
And the player doesn't like him back
Who cares whether they like each other?
Respect is key. And that is there otherwise Wilder wouldn't have brought him in the first place
I don't like my boss but I respect him
And as for this business about Midson being in and out of the team, people need to realise we are now playing a squad game
The days of sticking to the best XI players religiously are gone. You play the best XI for those oppos
Midson may start in a physical game at Stevenage and then be left out nxt time.

Midson had a good game on Saturday but CW was right to take him off. He set up the first goal and got stuck in, won a few balls in the air but he wasn't a goal threat. How many shots or headers did he have on target?
When Hackney came on for Midson, we created many more chances. He created the Penalty and sending off, had a couple of shots himself and put in 2 or 3 good crosses in aswell.
IMO there is only room for one player up front who can bring others into the game like Midson does, and that is Maclean. There is no way that Midson should play ahead of Maclean. They are too similar to play together, but Maclean is far more experienced and effective in that role.
As for Constables missed chances!!, he had to be in the right place at the right time. He did that with his tremendous workrate, I don't think any of the other forward players would have got in those positions, it was Beano's desire to chase every loose ball which made those chances and he was denied on at least two occasions by very good saves from a very impressive keeper (on form).
I like Midson, but IMO there is no way that he should play ahead of Craddock, Maclean or Beano.

I was just about to post that issue, he seemed to just keep running after the goal and lay on the fence, perhaps he was expecting his teamates to join him due to his significant contribution which tellingly they didn't. Perhaps I am Reading too much into it.

The only time I would want to see Jack Midson selected ahead of any of Tom Craddock, Macca or Beano is if they need a rest or carrying a slight knock. And then it would be between Mids, Alfie and Simon Hackney for a place depending on the opposition. I can see CW rotating the forwards occasionally though, if we have a run of Sat/Tues games for a few weeks. I like Jack Midson as without doubt you get 100% and he's a decent player. But he is correctly considered a squad player (imo) rather than a regular starter when compared to the other attacking players in the squad.

The top three posts to this thread seem very suspect. All written in the style. Multis showing 'their' support for Mido.
We keep going over the ground with Midson over and over again and it's getting quite boring now. I don't believe the 'ffs wat has midson got 2 do 2 get a game wtf wilder!!!!!' crowd, nor do I understand the moaners who regard him as 'average' either. Jack is a very good player with a good touch and a a great team player. What he isn't is a selfish, grab-the-game-by-the-scruff-of-the-neck, go-getter like Beano and therefore he won't get that many goals by virtue of the way he now plays out on the left. He takes fewer chances as he's often looking to set people up instead with Saturday being a fine example.
Certain games will suit Jack and certain games won't. Let's just stop the love-in and the inevitable counterattacks on those fans who like him and critique his performance as and when he plays.
