Some things that I think would help. 1. Play wingers on the side of the strongest foot, so they go on the outside rather than drift inside and clog the midfield. Not only would this help the wide players, it would create more space for Payne to thrive in. It would also make sense as we don't have overlapping full backs. 2. Press the opposition and do it higher up the pitch. Today, Ledson and Rothwell were so deep, often just yards in front of the back 4. It is passive and it invites the opposition on, which then helps lead to mistakes at the back as we're under strain more. What happened to Ledson bursting past Thomas to shut the keeper down? 3. Close down opposition wingers before they can cross the ball. 4. Teach the players to take some leadership when the chips are down. I want to see lots of shouting, and a good amount of pointing. 5. Employ some gamesmanship when we're leading in a game. Wind the opposition up. 6. Get further up the pitch. Getting Ledson and Rothwell to collect the ball off the defence sounds like a nice idea, but when they then turn and see the rest of the team miles away and all marked up then it's not much good. Crikey, that really does sum it up, doesn't it? What a post. Problem is that our defence is so slow and old that I don't think they can afford to play a high line. And you can't play a high press without a high defensive line. I am really concerned about our tactical inflexibility. Northampton sometimes went direct, sometimes they played it through the middle, sometimes they passed it wide. We just do the same thing, every single time. We don't have the target man or the wide players to do anything different. If anyone scouts us properly, the game is so easy. Ironically, it's the stronger sides - who can't be bothered to work us out - who give us our best chance to play how we want. But then they are good enough to take us on on our own terms anyway. You don't need to scout us properly we do the same thing every game

It took far too long for the players to step up today. We lost the game because we were collectively passive for too long and looking for an extra touch on the ball or not being that extra bit physical. It lacked crispness and for a long period, stepping forward into the space. The passing was fine, could have been quicker, but we moved them well. End product, patchy at best. If Hall doesn't want to track runners, he shouldn't be a footballer. Far too lazy and it kept costing us. Good talent but makes his full back look a mug because he's left with a 2 on 1. We really miss some physical bite in the midfield. Henry had a good game, Richardinho and Mousingho were decent, Martin kept it tidy. Not sure when Thomas got taken out that a card wasn't given by the Ref. Stopping a goal scoring opportunity met with a shrug of the shoulders. The South Stand Lino was the pits. How he missed our player being hit on the ground is beyond me. He must have been looking down the line on it. It always takes us far to long to up the tempo, we have started nearly every game I have seen at walking pace, it wasn't so bad when we didn't concede much but since super coach has turned our defence to shit it means we are always trying to get back into the game.

Early signs are not good on nelson. Achilles injury No wonder Eales dodged RadOx interview and left the stadium - he must have been in tears when his last paycheck picked up a bad injury! If Radio Oxford had read the Chairman's notes in the programme they would read that he was attending the "Royal Festival of Remembrance" in the evening hence, I assume, his need to rush off. So no dodging an interview, I assume, just like any other supporter, had to dash on the final whistle, to get home, get changed to get to social event in the evening.

I was spitting feathers coming out of the ground last night, but having reflected perhaps things aren't quite as bad as first feared. Sure it was a very poor performance (and I thought NTFC were nice and compact and made it hard for us). Most worrying was the lack of cohesion and effort at certain times from certain players. Ledson looked a shadow of the player we have seen in certain matches. Everyone is allowed an off day but I hope that isn't the love of the ale taking its toll on another young footballer. They say the table doesn't lie and we probably are a mid-table level team.... pretty good on some days, not so good on others. I am yet to be convinced that Pep is the man to change that but you have to give him time. Personally, I prefer a manager willing to have a rant in the technical area to stir things up, get the players going, get the crowd going.
Oh one last thing. John Mousinho was a class act bringing that ball out of defence. Realising that shitty 'pass along the backline' thing was getting us nowhere, 3 or 4 times he brought the ball forward to open things up. Intelligent footballer.

A note about Robbie Hall...
I think the only win he has seen where he has started for us was against Gillingham, who I would argue were the worst team we have seen this season. He also scored in that game.
He's started and we lost to:
Scunthorpe Blackpool Walsall Bury Northampton
He starts against The Posh, we go a goal down, he gets injured, then we batter them by 4 in the 2nd half.
Then we go on our 3 game, 2 draw streak without him available.
You could apply the following formula to Hall:-
If he starts, and he scores: we win. If he starts, and doesn't score: we lose.
I appreciate the sample data is small, but it seems as though playing him is a gamble. If he scores then great, if he doesn't then his defensive weaknesses and lack of bite in midfield cost us. It also usually means Ruffles doesn't play, so we lose a solid midfielder who also pops up with goals.

In the second half, we moved the ball a lot quicker and with Mousinho stepping into midfield when we had possession, we constantly had an overlap on the left that they struggled to deal with. Our end product wasn't near good enough, but the passing did work. First half, 10 minute period aside, it was a little too slow and extra touches were taken. It did make me realise that we desperately miss another experienced option in the midfield at the moment. Ledson had a mare yesterday, but kept on going and didn't hide. He just needed a more experienced partner to help him along and keep him calm. We really miss a boss in the middle of the pitch. This season is eerily like it was 3 years ago.

As wound up as I was yesterday, mainly due to the fact we rolled over against a side I just don’t like! (Does anyone ever say Ledson isn’t as good as what he thinks he is) It’s just going to be one of those seasons where we win a few then lose a few. We were on a very positive upwards spiral and with a new manager and a big turnover of players it’s very difficult to carry that on. We won’t go down and we won’t go up, if we can keep the season interesting and if we end up mid table I don’t see how that’s not too bad. Yes of course we all want to go up but you have to be realistic. We would get absolutely trounced in the championship and with the uncertainty of the ownership we need to stabilise that first and most of all.. own the ground/move! When we had won 3 on the bounce I never doubted pep and now after a few defeats I’m still not going too, he is learning but sometimes I would agree after games he’s a bit too passive. On to Plymouth next week! Looking forward to one of those pasties more than the game though I think!

I think that the debate on here at the moment is whether this is another major blip, or a sign of something more ominous than 'only finishing mid-table': an entrenching of a losing mentality on a squad previously used to winning. I'd say that Plymouth away will tell us a lot. After four defeats on the trot, the rot must be stopped, if for no reason other than to prevent very serious loss of belief from within the dressing room. I'm not much of a fan of the way this team constantly bigs itself up. That is coming from Pep. Concede a silly goal from a corner? Ah well, shouldn't worry because we are so brilliant at defending corners in general. So guess what happens next week? Ah. Concede another silly goal from a corner. And again go about proclaiming how brilliant we are and how it's all the refs fault. MApp was much more honest with himself after a defeat. You could hear in his voice that he was going to do whatever it took to stop the same thing happening again.

I agree Charlie, it annoys me even with the support moaning at the ref instead of realising we needed to get back into the game. Actions speak louder than words and this is what I mean about clotet after games saying “it will be okay we will learn” well sooner or later you need to learn! Plymouth are unbeaten in 6 now, we need to go down there and battle - I haven’t seen us do that in a long time. It’s not in our DNA. I thought Ledson was awful and rothwell had a good game, he was the only player taking people on and trying to get something going on his own in midfield. Ledson needs to get his ass in gear and show everyone what the hype is all about as I’ve never really seen it. After that mistake he just went! His head was shot to bits and second half he was a missing man.

At the moment, the team has too many gaps in it. Anyone who has ever played to a decent standard knows pressing the ball is not about the first man charging down the defence or keeper. You have to hunt in packs, we do not do that.
We also can’t press at the top because the midfield isn’t advanced enough leaving a gap between midfield and attack. The defence is fairly slow so they drop deep creating another very big gap between them and the midfielders.
In order to squeeze, we all have to do it ensuring all outfielders are in the opposition half. We simply can’t do that. The problem is we don’t have the ability to soak up pressure and counter either. Our game plan is very one dimensional and not very good. Consistent mind.

But do we have the pace in the side to do that? Maybe. Just. But not in this formation. I think we should look at 4321. With Obika, Hall and Thomas all up top. Playing on the break and running channels. And then play Ruffles, Ledson and one other in central midfield told to be tight and disciplined.

I would say next Saturday is a key match - NOT 'must win' but definitely 'must get a point'

I thought Thomas was terrific yesterday, but he’s so unbelievable isolated up there. Jack Payne would get a lot more assists if he had willing runners beyond an opposition back line. Takeover or not, Pep should get the next window to sort out this mess of a squad. When I say mess, it’s not hideous. However, it is woefully unbalanced with a severe lack of pace. There are too many big earners, too many players, too many bottlers and too many injury prone players. You couldn’t convince me that the two players we let go last January wouldn’t get in this side!

With the recent poor form and apparent lack of confidence I'd consider going back to 4-4-2. The players will be comfortable and familiar with it. Eastwood Carroll/Ribeiro, Martin, Mousinho, Ricardinho Henry, Rothwell,Ruffles, Paine, Thomas, Hall. Get Henry back on the right, also gives young Carroll a bit of protection. Paine is left footed so play him on the left and you can be sure he'll work hard and help out defensively. Give Ledson a break, bring back Ruffels. So you have Carroll, Henry and Rothwell all right footed in one triangle, with the left footers Ricardinho, Ruffels and Paine on the left hand side of the pitch. Need to develop partnerships all over the pitch. Give Hall a bit of a free reign up front playing off Thomas.

All we can hope for is that Clotet also realises that his overly sophisticated system isn't working because we don't have the players to make it work. Unfortunately I suspect that he wont (or can't) change. If that is so then we need a new manager. Too early to say which.

Looking ahead to Plymouth- PEP needs to go back to a two upfront formation, Thomas and Obika from the start, two physical quick strikers, should cause Plymouth issues.
Eastwood Carroll Martin Mousinho Ricardinho Hall Mowatt Ruffels Rothwell Obika Thomas
Rest Jack Payne who has played everygame so far (league, i believe) Mowatt is comfortable CM he played their for Leeds and Barnsley and allow Ruffels to comeback in and rest Ledson. Henry on a tightrope at the moment because of 1 yellow until suspension, so drop him now before he is forced to get dropped, he hasn't done much in the last few games anyway.Carroll in because at least he will make a tackle instead of admire the football like Tiendalli.
That team should be good enough to beat Plymouth aslong as we can keep Carey quite.
Yesterday we missed the height of Ruffels in midfield, hopefully he can come back in because we struggle in midfield because with Ledson and Rothwell in the centre, O'toole found it too easy to control the midfield because nobody challenged him physically.

Really, we just now need Paul Beasley's fans view. This will give us the true and fair assessment of yesterdays match, where we are, told as it is. Just hope Paul is still not in the Catherine Wheel or still trying to decipher and understand Northampton's financial position! Have noticed Highlights has gone off the radar..either too much or too little to say atm

Looking ahead to Plymouth- PEP needs to go back to a two upfront formation, Thomas and Obika from the start, two physical quick strikers, should cause Plymouth issues. Eastwood Carroll Martin Mousinho Ricardinho Hall Mowatt Ruffels Rothwell Obika Thomas Rest Jack Payne who has played everygame so far (league, i believe) Mowatt is comfortable CM he played their for Leeds and Barnsley and allow Ruffels to comeback in and rest Ledson. Not having a go, but that team you have put up is a relegation battling side, the only problem is I can't think of a team made up of fit, available players that isn't at the moment. We have a big squad but need to bring in new players in January, need the ownership situation sorted for that and a manager who is comfortable wheeler dealing, bringing new faces in who are faster, athletic and shipping out some of the pedestrian crocks we have been saddled with. Whether Clotet is the man you would trust to make more signings is doubtful, I don't think I could handle him signing any more of his injured has been from his former clubs. The summer was a disaster, if we can have a decent January transfer window then we can rescue this season as somehow we picked up a decent points total early on, we have been found out massively as a one paced, lazy tippy tappy side now, I can't see us picking up many more points without an injection of players that either allows us to change to a system that works or complement and allow us to use Clotets favoured one.

While I agree with a number of those comments about the failings of the current squad, I really cannot see that the magical January window will be the answer and all our fears laid to rest. Which decent players of the standard we require are going to want to de-camp to a mid-table league one side guided by a clueless manager?
