I am glad he is getting recognised and having a testimonial year

I hope it's better attended than Joey and DL's joint testimonial as they felt a little sparse from where I was sitting. He certainly deserves a proper send off - wonderful player.

Should probably make the most of this type of thing.
Will we ever have a player again in the future that has a testimonial? Unlikely I'd say.

Good news and thoroughly deserved. I'm glad the club have rectified an error of previous regimes.

I must be in a minority then because I don't agree with them. Even though I really liked Robinson as a player. Maybe I should suggest to my employer that I have a special day because I have worked for them for 40 years. Just saying.

I think you are in a minority. Loyalty needs recognition and long service in lower leagues is rare, the likes of Briggs, Shotton and Beauchamp Spring to mind

These testimonial games rarely get well supported sadly

These testimonial games rarely get well supported sadly I'd suggest playing it at Ox city.. Be cheaper (if not free with city keeping the bar takings) £10 £5 £1 entry and you'll get a good 2k in. Don't forget there are some serious players from Robbo's era who'll attract a good crowd.

That's not being negative, we just never get a turnout for these types of games.

Testimonials are less important than they used to be because a) it's rarer for a player to play a long time for a single club, and more importantly b) players get paid enough these days - even in the lower leagues - that they shouldn't really need any more of the fans' cash.
Les Robinson is still a good shout for a testimonial - 450+ appearances for the club, and he probably also missed most of the gravy train that is modern day football.
I doubt that anyone will be again in the future though. The other names mentioned on this thread - Clarke, Constable - played nowhere near as long for OUFC (both <300 games) and will have earned a lot more in their careers than Robinson did.

I wonder how much the club pay each year towards pensions, seeing as they legally have to these days. Also, just out of interest, are the foreign nationals entitled?
Don't remember much of Robinson, but will try to make an effort to turn up if I'm free. I agree it should be at Ox City.
Jake Wright might be one for the future, or even a joint one for a few of the conference promotion team.

People are saying Beano, Wright, Clarke but surely the point of a testamonial is to have them for players who are at a club for 10 years or more?

Beano is the only one with any chance at all, he's 1 goal off being our top scorer ever, and was far more of a fan favourite than Clarke or Wright ever were

He should do what briggsy did and play swinedump, that should bring a few more in. Bit strange having a testimonial all these years later, a lot of the younger fans won't even know who he is. But he was a solid player for us and deserves it,

More than deserves this and well done whoever put him forward, G.B.T for pressing the club on it and the club for reacting to it and making it happen. I posted the other week about how Rambo was in the lounge pre match, and how he came across as pretty indifferent to football, didn't really worry about keeping up with the game or team mates and how he thinks he should have been a rugby league player instead. Robbo was in the Lounge yesterday and was fantastic. He spoke so warmly about the club and city. All he wanted to do was play football and when he got the move here he loved the place. He beamed when he talked about Oxford and choked up a little when saying how he enjoyed his last couple of years back at Macclesfield because his poorly father could come and watch him play. After he finished playing he wanted to move back down to Oxford but the closest he could afford was Daventry. He didn't like it but moved just to be closer to Oxford again and then when house prices picked up in Daventry he got to move to Banbury which he beamed at because he was back 'home'. He now works with autistic children and often brings them to Oxford to see games and get involved at half time. Again he spoke with genuine enthusiasm about this.
I have seen so many disinterested ex players trot out a few lines pre match then walk off to find a bar. Les was an impressive player who served the club magnificently but seems like an even more impressive human being.
These are the players that testimonials were made for.

He comes across as a genuine person, which can be a rare thing in football. I like how the testimonial committee are doing various activities as it increases the chance to raise good money.

Maybe I should suggest to my employer that I have a special day because I have worked for them for 40 years. Just saying. Yes and no. People from yesteryear who didn't earn the coin they do now, yes,it's a short career. Any current player earning £150/£250k P.A. no chance. Remember Briggsy's ? Swindon end of July !!!! Testimonials have different policing rules to normal games,ALL policing is paid for out of the gate receipts(at least it used to be) So they keep the police presence to the bare minimum. Their was 3 men and a dog at Briggsy's trying to keep 500 Oxford from getting into the Cuckoo lane after the game . They kept the scummers in for hours I also went to Billy Hamiltons against a Northern Ireland X1 including George Best, surprise, surprise he never showed. (If my memory serves me well, the scummer Jimmy Quinn scored a hat trick that night for NI)
