Have to feel a bit sorry for Rothwell. I've rated him since he joined, but he doesn't seem to be able to hold down a place in the starting line up. It's a huge shame, because his ability to drive forward with the ball and play intricate passes around the box is fantastic. I thought when he came on against Shrewsbury he turned the game around (along with Obika).
Do we see him working his way into the team? Or has he been pushed further back with the arrival of Mowatt? How good would it be if we could work out a way to play Rothwell, Payne, Mowatt, and Hall all in the same team? Perhaps some Spanish style two false 9s?
Anyway, it seems he's out of contract at the end of the season. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be one of those that we wish we'd done more to keep hold of.

Surely it is up to him to prove that he deserves to be in the team and perform when he is there? He has done well in patches I reckon and you can see a good player in him. I am not sure where his best position is though. Is he a central midfield payer? I am not sure that it has worked with him there instead of Ruffels/ Ledson. It is a big season for him but if he performs well he will get into the team.

He might just flourish u see the new regime. He has good pedigree, and has played well at times. Given a chance like everyone else he could do very well

He needs a run of games in CM behind the strikers. Because he has a turn of pace over a short distance, he often fills in on the flanks which is not his natural position in my view. However, given the current playing squad, i think he will find it hard to get a run in the team behind the striker.

If they have an opportunity and take it and play well they will maintain their place... If they don't they wont, its that simple.
We have competition for starting places in most positions now and also one or two youngsters who could step in and do a job when needed and that bodes well for the season..
I'm confident we will have a great season and be up there at the death.

Turn out to be one of those we wanted to keep, or whatever he said. I think. Pretty little feller, can't seem to get his head up, always seems to run into a clump of opponents. Hope I'm wrong. He needs a load of good coaching......

Rothwell is still young and I can see him being a class act, I have liked what I've seen of him so far and he is getting better all the time. As for running into a clump of players yes he has and on occasions he has acquitted himself well and dribbled himself out of the clump but yes he has also lost the ball in amongst the clumps.

Seeing it's one of my tasks (thanks, ESB) to be beastly about Rothwell, surely the sole cause of 'Rothwell making the team more effective' against Shrewsbury was that he had the wisdom to come on at the same time that the key change was made: Obika up front.

He was also much more effective than both Ledson and Ruffels in dropping deep and starting our attacks. Our favoured cm partnership are both high energy players that can tackle, press, play it neatly, but playmakers they are not.

He's a central midfielder who excels in attacking and going forward. He's either an 8 or a 10; roles I don't think he will ever get the chance to play here.

I too like Rothwell. I hope he does get the chance to show what he can do. I think he has a quick thinking mind in and around the box and if Payne goes back in January he could be the natural replacement.

I like Rothwell, but agree he is pretty ineffective out wide. I'd love to see him getting a run in the team in CM with Ledson playing the deeper role. I think that would be as strong a CM pairing as any team in this league. He just need 5/6 games on the bounce

The way he broke the line several times today, including going storming through and producing a lovely dinked finish for the second, proved once and for all that Joe Rothwell is not only a very good footballer, he's an attacking midfielder. HE. IS. AN. ATTACKING. MIDFIELDER.
I really, really hope that he stays in the team and is encouraged and given license to push up the park. The way he glides past players and breaks the lines is absolutely essential in finding a way through compact teams and he's comfortably the best player we have for doing it.
I would put a contract extension in front of both him and Robbie Hall asap.

Rothwell is quality. When he plays a bit deeper he can really drive forward with the ball and open up space. His first touch and close control were top notch today.

If he is to play a more attacking role then I think Henry should stay in the team. Can't be playing with a striker, 2 attacking midfielders and 2 out and out wingers.

I've always said Rothwell is going to be quality and after think by the end of the season we will see a top player.......... Maybe Jose may buy him back for a few million stranger things have happened, Pogba springs to mind.

Thought Rothwell had a really good game today, looks so much better in the centre picking up the ball and driving forward.
To my mind his best game to date in an Oxford shirt.

Absolutely wonderful today. My man of the match. Really good quick vision and has such a good engine, racing back to cover on more than one occasion.
