It's so refreshing, compared to say five years ago, to know that we have enough depth to have these problems!
I would prefer to get as many fringe players ran out as possible, including resting Eastwood. I'm not that fussed about cups this year (although the money-spinning ties are obviously a draw) and, to me, Pep would benefit more from seeing as many players as possible in action early on because seeing them in proper games is far different from seeing them on the training ground. That said, in Pep we trust.
I'm abroad right now but I can't wait to get back and come to some matches. Probably more excited than I was last season.

6-0 A group of professionals should be dispatching pub-teams with ease. What if Carling did pub teams.. ??

These games are always difficult...lowly opposition always raise their game against better teams, its their players chance to make a statement and perhaps even put themselves in the shop window. It happens in every cup competition in the country. Normally the result goes the way of the team in the ascendancy especially at home but not always.
Saying that Towns priority is league survival as I can really see them being in struggle all season and the team will probably just go out there and enjoy themselves and avoid any serious injury without worrying too much about the result.
A relaxed team under no pressure often outperforms itself so I am going for a 2 all draw against a changed Oxford side.
Looking forward to a good match tonight though and a reasonable crowd too I hope...see you all later and have a safe trip.

Oxford United 5 (Bird Beak 2, Johnson, On me 'ed son and Ruffle the hair) Cheltnumb 0 Att: 4766 and 566 away fans. Pretty routine, really. No fractured clavicles, no displaced coccyxes and no hernias. Ribiero will catch a cold, though, and be out for three weeks. All the new blokes will play, apart from the new Swede, of course. The scoreboard will malfunction, somehow. The hot dog stand will be moved from the East stand to the open end for some boring reason. Before the game starts, John Bird Beak will apologise for having played for the Scum, in a previous life. He will not be forgiven. Shame. That just about does it for me. Shit I nearly forgot - a you-know-what will run onto the pitch! John Bird Beak? Next-level nickname courtesy of The Cudd. Hang on a minute, sonofivan, you've got me thinking there..... 1(Clint) Eastwood, 2 Ruffles (the hair), 3 (bird beak) Obika, 4 Sammy the Shammy (Xemi), 5 (on me 'ed son) Ledson, 6 Payne (in the arse), 7 (foul smell) Rothwell, 8 (sod) Hall, 9 (phallic) Johnson, 10 (Half) Nelson, 11 (John) Thomas. Could we actually play that team tonight?

5-0 Ruffels (2) Payne Xemi and Obika and they will hardly get a kick as they chase shadows all night long. Think we have hatfull of goals in midfield this year. Anyone want to lay odds on Ruffels 20+ in all competitions?

It's been nearly 10 years since a side in a lower division knocked us out of a cup. That was *ahem* the Tonbridge Angels game in December 2007.
It shouldn't be a banana skin tonight but let's keep it tight to begin with to ensure it isn't.

I hope it's not our Waterloo tonight with an ABBA penalty shoot out. The winner takes it all Hopefully no need for a SOS to the bench for a super trouper sub.

Certain areas of the ground are closed tonight ....ffs its the LEAGUE cup not the boycott trophy The club would have a good idea of pre sales to whether it was worth opening other parts of the ground. Since they haven't would seem to suggest it was the right idea as it keeps staffing costs down.

I'm on the fence between resting certain players (mostly the more fragile lads), getting some much-needed minutes for others but also keeping some stability. To that end I'd go with:
Eastwood
Tiendalli Nelson Martin Johnson
Ledson Ruffels
Hall Payne Rothwell
Obika
Ribeiro, Williamson and Thomas, all of whom have had injury problems last year, aren't rushed to play two games in such a short space of time right away. Tiendalli, Martin, Hall and Obika get much needed minutes. We keep some stability in the spine of the team with Nelson, Lego, Ruffs & Payne, less concerned about Marv's defensive fragility against a team lower down the league pyramid...
and ideally see Xemi, Canice & Hemmings (or Ricardinho if he's fit) get some minutes later in the game

If you can't be confident against one of the weakest sides we could of got then it wouldn't say much for our hopes this season. It's actually nice to be able to be cocky about a game in the league cup for the first time in years, wonder when the last time we were such heavy favourites for a game in this competition was? I suppose - given that the first round is seeded - it must have been after the last time we finished top half in the third tier or better? So that would be 1999-2000, when we played Southend (and won 3-0 over two legs. Matt Murphy x2 & Beauchamp). I'd probably be inclined to make a few (maybe 3-4 changes) today. We're going to need the whole squad to contribute if we're going to get anywhere this season, so getting a few more players a run-out today, in a game we should win anyway, would seem to make sense. Maybe bring in Raglan or Martin, Xemi or the new guy, Hall & Obika or Hemmings for Williamson/Ledson/Henry/Thomas? Man, we've got a lot of options at the moment, don't we?
