Thought I'd create a thread to pass a few thoughts on the state of the game north of the border - as well as mention any OUFC connections.
I went to watch my local team St.Johnstone play Rangers on Wednesday. A strange experience to say the least. Rangers fans took over 2 and a bit stands. They made for a cracking atmosphere I'll give them that although as the game petered out you could sense their frustration. The moment of the game was ex-Oxford striker Steve MacLean scoring past ex-Swindon's goalkeeper Wes Foderingham. MacLean really is pivotal to The Saints - he reminded me of Danny Hylton to be honest. His work rate was superb & he would often be back in and around his own penalty area defending. His goal was due to his persistance in seizing on a defence error.
The crowd was just under 8,000 (St.Johnstone normally get between 2,000-3,000). I went to a game against Inverness CT earlier in the year and the crowd was just over 2,000 - the difference between the 2 games was quite surreal. It would seem a lot of Perth locals only come out for the Old Firm games and avoid all other 'low key' fixtures. To be honest it's not cheap watching them. Tickets were £24 plus a ridiculous £8 booking fee. Trying to call the ticket office was also a bit of a joke & it took me over 3 days of trying to get through to book.
Re: Inverness CT - remember Alex Fisher? he nearly scored a late equaliser for ICT at Ibrox last week!
Everyone knows there's a huge disparity in the SPL teams but it's got to be bigger than ever I'd have thought. Imagine Oxford in a league with 9 other clubs and they were Liverpool, Chelsea, Ipswich, Brentford, Notts County, Grimsby, Carlisle, Leyton Orient and Barnet.
Following your team in lower league footy in England can be bloody hard work for fans at times but I wouldn't swap it for Scottish footy any day.....

Good thread to divert us from stewards and buying the ground and possibly losing our Chairman.
Share your Scottish football stories here! Whenever I worked in Scotland during the football season I tried to take a match in.
Celtic 3 Partick 1 in the pouring rain. Only about 300 Patrick fans there. Crap match, crap atmosphere, Celtic Park probably only half full.
Forfar v someone I can't remember. About 300 people spread out across the terraces, most of them eating scotch pies. Thoroughly enjoyable on a late summer's evening, although I can't recall the score.
Albion Rovers v Arbroath in Coatbridge was easily the best of the bunch. Arbroath were going for promotion and brought a vociferous bunch of about 100 fans. The match was entertaining, ending 2-2. I loved Albion Rovers FC. I was obviously not a regular, and friendly club officials pounced on me as I entered and insisted on finding out all about me, buying me a pie and giving me a complementary programme!
EDIT - Nearly forgot! Hearts v Hibs derby. The bile spewing between the two sets of fans made Oxford v Swindon seem civil.

I never went to a Scottish football match, but I did walk from Edinburgh to Newcastle once after a Kevin Ayers gig; got a complementary program an' all - it was black to match my Levis, only a quid, too.

No mention of Forfar. Bit of a coincidence, don't you think?

EDIT - By the way, I've heard about Rangers coaches on their way back to Airdrie getting bricked on their way through Coatbridge. Probably just harmless high jinks though, nothing to do with sectarianism.

I love OUFC with all my heart, but the passion of the teddy bears and in fact other Scottish teams is on another level!

Someone always trys to bring up the sectarian aspect in these discussions, fact is many Gers fans are actually RC and also many celtic fans are prods and you also have celtic fans in the orange order and loyalist flute bands so it's not all black and white like people think.
But I do get fed up with English lads who think going to Ibrox makes them some sort of super loyalist or something, sure it the same with those English who go to Parkhead and think they are some kind of super provo!
If people go for the right reasons to enjoy the day and the football then fair play to them.
