We need to dig deep at Roots Hall and earn the right to play the way we like to, if we're on level terms the last quarter of the match we will have the fire power on the bench ready to take advantage of any tiredness in the opposition. So, expecting a 'late show' from us tonight. Sarfend 0 Yellows 1.

Had a glance at their forum, they seem to be all over the place as a side this season. Don't know their best formation, their best defensive lineup, or even best goalie (reminiscent of us last year in that respect, they've got two who seem as bas as each other). Many predicting a home loss. Given that we are solid but unspectacular at the minute I could see us nicking this. 1-0, Thomas.

Always a tough place to go and difficult opponents. But we are a different team now and I am hoping for a good result. I am wishing for 2-0 to us.

According to serc's interview on yp, getting into them from the off is high on the agenda. I still maintain that we should play two strikers and a start of hemmings and taylor would give us a proper point of attack to put them on the back foot. If we can get an early goal, then the pressure will be so much greater for them. A first away win is on the cards here so i predict a 2-0 win for us.

Not a place where we usually get results, but I am going for a solid 2-0 away win.

On form we should win. But giving our lack of creation of real goal scoring opportunities this could be a banana skin match. If Appleton plays two forwards instead of his preferred one then we should walk it. If he plays one then probably 0-0 (but we may sneak a 1-0 result).

So if MAPP follows your advice and plays with 2 strikers we will 'walk it', but if his experience is such that he believes that one up front is a better option we will draw or sneak a win? Easy then. MAPP needs to simply follow your advice and we will go up!!!

If the midfield and front 3 of Johnson, Maguire and Hemmings can really click into gear then for sure there are plenty of goals in this team and tonight could be the perfect opportunity to display our counter attacking prowess.
Dare I say 3-1 to the mighty Oxford
Maguire, Johnson and Hemmings

Don't understand the call for 2 up top given how poor our results and performances were at the start of the year when playing that system. League 1 is a big jump in quality and we can't get away with 2 in central midfield anymore, we were getting overrun. We look so much more solid and competitive since changing to 1 up top at half time v Rochdale.
If we ignore cup games then in the 6.5 games where we played 442 we scored 6 and conceded 8.
In the 3.5 games since we changed to 4231 we have scored 4 and conceded 1, against arguably better opposition.
Admittedly its not as simple as that. Improvement coincides with arrival of Raglan and Johnson, and its a very small sample size. But the eyeball test backs up that we look a much more balanced and competitive side playing 4231.
The biggest problem with it for me is that Sercombe is better playing facing goal than with his back to goal. I'd like to see the Glasgow Maradona in that role.

Don't understand the call for 2 up top given how poor our results and performances were at the start of the year when playing that system. League 1 is a big jump in quality and we can't get away with 2 in the middle anymore, we were getting overrun. I think once Hall is fit we will see Maguire ove to the #10 role. I think Sercombe is currently in this position as Crowley looks a little light weight and Sercombe is devastating on those occasions when facing goal (winning the penalty vs swindon etc). The 4-2-3-1 allows us to pack the midfield a little more, but for me, the major difference is having Johnson out wide. Genuine pace that Lundstram know he can look up and spray diagonals (which we didnt have in the 4-4-2 and that I think led to Lundstram's poor form at the start of the season).

The calls for a 4 man midfield are silly IMO, was quite glaringly obvious we were getting overrun at the start of the season using that formation.

If we aren't going for 2 up front (and I can see the argument against it) then surely we have to play Maguire as a proper central number 10 and bring in some pace out wide (one side Johnson, the other Macca/Tyler Roberts). Even more important if we are going to be playing on the counter-attack, I'd have thought.

Start Ledson for Rothwell. Need some bite from the off.
Maguire in behind Hemmings.
Macca and Johnson on the wings.
Counter attacking football resulting in a 0-2 win for the away side.

I think Rothwell will start and lesson tomorrow come as and when we need him. Rothwell has a good bit of skill that this game could suit so I would start him

Shouldn't mean a lot, different teams to our present one - and this applies to them too of course. Would we swap any of their players for ours?

Playing at home is always much more difficult for teams under pressure, as Southend are. We need to get stuck in and frustrate them, make their own fans turn on them, make them make mistakes. With that in mind playing with four in midfield is surely ridiculous. We need to stifle them and dominate the middle of the park.
If we score early I can see them absolutely crumbling. Fully expect our duck against them to be broken.

Think we will scrape a lucky 2-1 win with a debatable last minute penalty. Southend will find when you're at the bottom your luck is often out

0-0 I reckon. I think they'll be cagey to try and steady the ship and our current formation doesn't really allow flowing attacking football, or it hasn't in recent weeks.
I hope we win as a draw or defeat would mean only 2 or 3 points from the last 3 games.
Hoping for an improved performance from Johnson who hasn't impressed yet.

4-2-3-1 tonight. Has to be.
I'd like to see Hemmings upfront but I think we'll start with Taylor.
Definitely want to see Johnson and Macca out wide with the Scottish mischief maker in behind the striker.
0-2 I hope but the important thing is not to concede. Pickings up 1s away from home has to be the priority over balls out attacking for the time being. We can look at that when Rob Hall comes in.
