Another good win for them today against Brazil and into the final again. Clearly something is right lower down, so much so German sides are licking their chops at stealing players from the Premier League with the offer of first team football.
Brewster looked a looked a lively player up top with a knack to score you can't teach and Foden a very, very good player at that age. Most heartening was seeing how passionate and joyful they were at the final whistle. Makes the senior team look coldly clinical and banal.
Worth having the game on in the background on Saturday when they play against Spain for those that aren't off to Fleetwood.

Agree - there is good English talent - unfortunately hardly any of these kids will see Premier League football so will never be picked for the senior squad. IMO The senior national team is run by the FA for merchandising!

No doubt this will all be thanks to the premier league and no one else.

But the good thing is that clubs like us might pick up the unpolished diamonds down the line

These young players may not be able to break through at Premier League clubs, but the blessing in disguise is that moving abroad may open doors for them to get competitive football between the crucial ages of 18 to 21.
Also, playing in a foreign league is something English footballers never seem to have on their CVs. Always nice to see English players being brave enough to leave their comfort zones, branch out and learn other footballing cultures.

Watched the game was really encouraged by the team and a couple of players seemed exceptional. A bit sad to see its a bit like the first team, overloaded with Man City/Chelsea etc players(although the sub keeper was from Fleetwood !!). Also did it without their best player(supposedly) Jandon Sancho,a 17 year old who Man City sold to Dortmund in the summer for £10 Million !!!

I’ve only fitfully read about the England youth set up, but could this improved performance be down to the National Football Centre starting to bear fruit? It’s been five years since it opened and there’s little doubt that England’s youth teams have performed a lot better since it has been the central point for national football. Each age group appears to have shown some level of improvement – senior team as a massive exception of course!
I think the next hurdle will be turning those good performances at youth level into thriving careers in the PL or FL. However, being a YT player at Chelsea or Man City must be a drag. Plenty of wearying loans with no hope of pushing the first team until an eventual release at the age of 22 into the ‘real world’ of football is not the right angle for these players. They’ll need game time by the age of 18/19.

It's funny watching the youth teams do so well, and then seeing how abject the men's team are. It's almost like looking at a before and after the players are exposed to silly money.
It just needs the FA to grow some balls and stand up to the Premier League and enforce a home grown rule, i.e. a minimum of 9 of the match day 18 man squad must be English.

Well developed players for their age, that you can offer a more immediate route to the first team, with kids are now realising what will improve their career is real games in real teams, not the academy crap or silly trophies.

It's all thanks to the premier league. If it wasn't for the premier league, football would truly be in the dark ages! We should be eternally thankfully to them for keeping our national game going.
We should always be grateful to take any scraps thrown from their table!

I am not sure that is true. As somebody else suggested Burton seems to be making a difference and the PL clubs at last seem to bringing through some exceptional talent. The young teams seem to be as successful as they have ever been and German clubs are taking some of the youngsters (has that happened much before)? So the interesting thing will be whether the current crop of U17's to U20's actually develop in order to give England a vert good first team. I guess that we will know in 4-8 years!!

As Borussia Dortmund did with Jadon Sancho who played in the group stages before going back to his club (which was agreed between club and country). They signed him for £8m from Man City in the summer. He has already been involved with 6 1st team games when I last looked. He apparently drove the transfer from what I've seen/read as he wanted a clear route to being given a chance in the 1st team squad which Man City couldn't/wouldn't give him.

The checkatrade trophy competition is for them isn't it? I would have little problem with academy sides in the Checkatrade Trophy if they were only allowed to use players eligible to play for England. Wasn't one of the reasons for them being in the Trophy the future of the England team ?

There are 3 or more other lads that gone to Germany and Portugal to get on with their careers. Chris Willock left Arsenal to go to Benfica, Kaylen Hinds has gone to Wolfsburg, etc. I wouldn't be surprised to see Phil Foden try and get out of City to get game time. His chances of getting into that team are nigh on zero. The threat of losing talent who could be worth £50 million + in the future may force the big teams to make hard choices. Feeling the threat of losing talent could do more for the game than any silly scheme the FA or Premier League can come up with.

It is illegal to implement that rule under EU law. After Brexit who knows ? Now where's my helmet ?

City will try to keep him and I do not blame them for it - every club would do that very thing. Will he accept sitting on the bench or see an avenue into the team behind some serious talents? Cynically, when a player gets to 18 at a club like City, it's time to leave and go elsewhere.

Ledson has it spot on. For some players at top clubs, it's easy to play academy games, cruise along on 5-10k a week, parade around in your Chelsea/city/etc training gear and think you'll walk into another club at 21. For most, it doesn't happen.
