Best anthems. Now we’re talking!
The aforementioned Canada (‘Oohh, Canada’ might be the most Canadian way to start their national anthem), Italy and France. I do like the US national anthem if for the ludicrous lyrics. It does sound like ‘I’m Sorry, I Haven’t A Clue’s’ one song to be the tune of another. Russia have had a classic for many years as well.
GB and Germany have two awful flat tunes. Liechtenstein even have the same tune as GSTQ as well.

Italy or France are great ones when the players are pumped up and the crowd are going for it.
The ironic thing with the US National Anthem is the hysteria about standing for it, but not what singers do to make it their own. I've heard some shocking renditions of it over the years.

What is this all about!? It does mean something the anthem , two world wars and all that! England was something once and stood up for what was wrong! What exactly does it mean?

Best anthems. Now we’re talking! They may not be going anywhere near Russia next year, they may only have supplied more than three British Lions due to the most glaring case of nepotism in recent years... ...but our friends from across Offa's Dyke sure can write anthem to consider standing up for... ...Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is your hands-down winner...case closed, Colombo! Honourable mention - Nur Zulland.

www.royal.uk/national-anthemGoes back to 1745 and not changed since, apart from K to Q. Standing and singing it does create a sense of history if nothing else, but perhaps it is time for a change. Presuming that we can come up with a decent tune, what should the lyrics include nowadays in order to satisfy people and remain politically correct?

Two issues for me, one the anthem didn't start 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' so its not mine and secondly I do not understand the link between the anthem and the military.
I am 100% behind the military and not standing for some random song does not change that. I say play something we all relate with the military, I would stand for the last post because in my mind that is completely linked with the the military whichever country you come from.
Just because Donald Trump has made it a big issue, there is no reason for us all to jump on his hideous bandwagon

I suppose it boils down to what you feel is important to you. For me it is family, friends, Oxford United and country. I will go out of my way to support any one of those four. Given that God Save the Queen is our National Anthem then I will stand for that as it is associated to my country. I am not religious and I’m ambivalent about the monarchy/republic issue as it has no direct impact on my life.
Standing or not standing is a personal thing and the song means different things to different people. There is no right answer.

Yes, we live in a democracy, Why should someone yell at me to stand, we kept dictators out of this country...I can do what I want, within the law.

Me personally I actually like our national anthem. I agree it's not the best anthem but it's mine. I always stand and sing it loud and proud. Do I think of the words or what they might mean, no. I just sing it. To me it's a personal thing. As regards the best anthem I love the Irish one that they belt out before they play rugby.
