Never thought NK would fire near/over an opponent's land territory. I say let them have it.

S.Korea and the US doing all these military exercises ain't helping matters, mind.
'letting them have it' won't really help matters, will it?

NK will do what they want to do regardless of what anyone else thinks or says, because they know no one will do anything about it apart from words and sanctions. China seems reticent to put a real pause on, so I suppose it will fall to the Trump's regime whim about what will happen next, if it happens at all.

This sort of willy-waving is not much different than what went on during the cold war with the US and the Russians. Loads of military posturing on both sides. But with Kim Jong Un and Trump in charge, that makes the whole situation a bit worrying. Let's hope neither of them do anything stupid.

I imagine that China is most nervous about this. They are content with NK as a buffer between them and US-ally SK and they make use of NK slave labour. If something happens with NK, then they will have some issues with their new border.

I would have thought that with any US President things would be looking a little worrying. Kim Jong Un has been apparently building up over time a nuclear arsenal and missiles that can reach the US mainland. China probably have most influence over NK and that seems to be of little use. A loose cannon of a dictator and the World seems powerless to stop him. SK and Japan are not the only countries who must be very worried.

Of course, but do they go close to the US border with Canada and do it? Sorry, maybe seems like I'm defending the freaky one, not at all. Just wondering if the US not being so aggressively close to him might help calm the whole situation down...?

Just wondering if the US not being so aggressively close to him might help calm the whole situation down...? No they don't but a bit harsh to have a go at South Korea for military exercises in their own country and tbf to the US they were heavily involved in protecting South Korea last time. These exercises haven't led to an invasion previously and the dates are well known in advance so a bit bad strategically if they were genuinely going to invade. Also, the NK nutter in charge is only using them as an excuse as they've done nuclear bomb tests and missile tests without any military exercises going. Also, SK doesn't tend to fire artillery or naval gunfire on its neighbour's territory when NK have military exercises. Edit: NK have also talked for many years about the US being the target for its missile/nuclear weapon programme so the US are fully involved in this.

The issue NK has in the short term is getting all the bits to fit for the missile together and to the US with regularity. NK would love the US out of SK so they can unify the peninsula. The young Un is merely ramping up what his dearest Daddy had started.
Every method has been tried with NK other than all out war. NK simply don't care what others think. China need to step up with their neighbours.

That depends how much you value the lives of the NK concentration camp inmates, citizens in general and those citizens of Japan and SK. If you commit a 'crime' in NK your family can be sent to a concentration camp, where they are ritually tortured and starved to death. I say let them have it.

Out of interest, do people think our forces will get involved if it does kick off?

It depends if someone can link it as a threat to NATO. I'd hope not, but it would inevitable that certain elements of our military would get involved.
Perhaps part of the solution is for a western leader to go to NK and meet Un face to face. No one has done that in NK for a long, long time. Dennis Rodman doesn't count

Would also depend if it was organised through the UN*, in which case many countries including the UK would likely get involved just as in Afghanistan.
*China would be a stumbling block here although a coalition may form because of NK's flouting of UN directives.

Hah. The UN, as shown in Russia, Afghanistan, Syria, are useless wind bags unfortunately. Great for posturing and lower level stuff.

Hah. The UN, as shown in Russia, Afghanistan, Syria, are useless wind bags unfortunately. Great for posturing and lower level stuff. The trouble with the UN is The United Nations Security Council "power of veto". This means that the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, and United States) can veto any directive no matter how strong the opinion of the other Sovereign states. Even if they vote 192 to 1 to take military action against North Korea, if the one that opposes it is North Korea's only friend - China, then it ain't happening. Makes you wonder how anything ever get's done.

That article is so full of holes: - The media have constantly mentioned the military exercises in articles I've read including ones from the US. - The author fails to explain why it is acceptable for North Korea to have large scale military exercises simulating invading South Korea but criticises the South, Japan etc for doing so. - Fails to mention that South Korea don't fire missiles, test nukes or fire artillery over/at the North when they have a military exercise. - Fails to mention that North Korea have tested/launched missiles near to Japan etc, tested nuclear weapons without any provocation. - They are severely irritating their only ally China (who they embarrassed by upstaging the Chinese president Xi Jinping at a BRICS Summit with the nuclear test). Slightly different viewpoint to the author claiming the poor North Korea are badgered and picked on by everybody else when their ally is agreeing sanctions etc against them. Can't be bothered to write anymore but there is plenty more.

The UN is there for people to posture and talk in, but when countries want to do their own thing, they ignore it. In all honesty, it's a waste of time and money. Economic sanctions in NK will only hurt the people who are already at a low level. Trump's implied economic sanctions against people who trade with NK may get the desired effect on China.

The US and the West can do very little or nothing at all against China. Trump quickly learned that when he took office.
