I make it 22 players as the squad with maybe 23 if you include Napa as I expect the rest will be out on loan. If we sign 2 more that takes it to 24/25 squad players which is a good sized squad for league 1.
Interesting that Williamson is number 4 as even with his past achievements and injuries in the game I did have him as a squad player but I expect it will be him and Nelson as 1st choice CB's.
Also Marvin getting no. 11 shows he is seen as a winger rather than full back.

Think at the moment I'd line up like this however a LB would be nice to push MJ further up

Think at the moment I'd line up like this however a LB would be nice to push MJ further up That would be some line up in league 1! Add in Xemi once he gets going and Obika and we could cause some damage. Plus if we add a left back and push johnson on then we could cause teams serious problems.

Also we would be a bit exposed defensively down our left side. It does kind of highlight the need for a sound LB

Think at the moment I'd line up like this however a LB would be nice to push MJ further up Did Williamson play on the left or right at Leeds? Would be nice to think he can deal with that side and rid us of that little gremlin. The way things are shaping up it looks like Johnson will start at left back because it would be very hard to leave Hall out at the moment and I don't like him playing up top although there is a case for Ruffles in for Rothwell to shore up the left hand side, which is fantastic going forward but a little light on the back foot. Putting the team down on paper and looking at what we will have on the bench/getting fit gives me confidence in our ability to challenge this season, I just worry it will take 10/15 games to get us going again.

Think at the moment I'd line up like this however a LB would be nice to push MJ further up For the Oldham game? Doubt Payne will start as he has said he is lacking match fitness having not played much during pre-season. Will most likely be eased in the first few games.

Experience in midfield worry's me in that line up.. There is plenty of experience in defence and in front of them so they should be able to coach them along if they need it. Add Henry to that also.

If not Payne there I see no problem with Rothwell in the three and Ruffles with Ledson and Payne off the bench. Gives us a little more bite in the middle.

I reckon that Carroll will start at left back, Ruffels in midfield (for Rothwell) and Johnson on the left wing, leaving Henry to play off Obika/ Thomas and Payne on the bench.
Going forwards it will be a nice problem to have as it is likely that only 3 out of Hall, Johnson, Henry and Payne will start most weeks.

Think at the moment I'd line up like this however a LB would be nice to push MJ further up When you put it down on paper like this and the see who is on the bench why do people worry? With a proper left back and a little tinkering formations etc I can't see why we won't be a serious challenger this season. Roll on Pompey as I can't make the Oldham game. COYY

Having Williamson as 4, with Nelson and Martin as 5 and 6 respectively, could suggest a back 3/5 at times, which may help balance the lack of experience in the centre of the park against stronger opposition.
I still see a back 4 being the default setup, but I see Pep as a man not afraid to shake up the system to account for the opposing team's style/formation.

Maybe wrong but I get the impression that Pep's preferred system is a 4-4-1-1 line up. Time will tell.

First choice XI when all fit? Hall over Henry for me. And Hemmings wouldn't be my first choice.

Be happy with that, possibly obika for hemmings and ruffels for rothwell, particularly against rougher stronger sides. Hall is rubbish on the right

Amazing how quickly things change, with Kelleher loaned out and Raglan injured, suddenly looking vulnerable at CB if Nelson/Williamson were to be injured. So one of the positions that we had the most depth for is now (temporarily) one of the weakest

Hall is rubbish on the right Hall played on the right a against Birmingham and I thought he was great. Quite possible he can improve there I just thought last season he was at his weakest on the right. Down the left and through the middle he seemed much more confident as he has the option to beat the man or dribble in field, on the right he never tries to beat his man as he can't cross with his right foot, so he stops or goes inside, teams found that out quickly and nullified him. Johno is a threat down the left because of his pace and the balls he whips into the box, personally I'd like the same down the right from Henry and ribs.

Williamson provides much needed experience and looks to have formed a solid partnership with Nelson.
Ruffels has a great game in the middle and gets an important goal.
Jack Payne excels in the number 10 role, and looks to bring others into the game rather than going alone.
Pep gets our first win again Oldham in ages and the first Oxford manager to win his first game in something like 10 years.
I know we are only 1 game in, but maybe a lesson in not dismissing every new addition or shuffling of players before a ball has been kicked in anger?

Oldham were shite last season and we're already doing better. But let's not think things might be good, much easier to come out with pointless sarcastic b*llshit.
