Any players we sign now, we are likely to be lumbered with for two years. Hence to rush out and in haste sign 5 players now may backfire well before next summer (Certainly some fans will decide by November the new players are a waste of space and want to get rid). We definitely need to get a striker in as urgent priority, but then I would like to build the squad slowly with players MAPP is 100% confident in. As we play matches MAPP will have a much better understanding of the weaknesses in the squad and no doubt fill gaps with a loan until a permanent transfer is available. In our league the transfer window deadlines seem a bit of a myth as it always seems possible to get a player on loan before signing in the transfer window. Surely DF and MAPP have enough connections to get quality loan players in (MAPP must be able to call on Ryan Giggs) I think patience is required. with appleton's and fazackerly's links to blackburn mabe we can get jordan rhoades back Perhaps we're trying to get Jason Roberts out of retirement?

I've just heard a whisper that we had a bid for Kane Ferdinand turned down by Posh - but maybe putting forward a better one this week.
And also the Ryan Harley rumour may be resurrected this week, too.
Even if these do not come off, it is a bit comforting to think this is the kind of player we may be looking at.

Wasn't good enough for Luton in the League below so I hope we don't spend what I would guess a fair sum of money on Kane Ferdinand.

This forum does amaze me at times IL has created all this mess & the £8 debt (along with a few others) but now quite a lot on here want to blame the new owners for it Whatever new owners we were going to get (whether that was Charlie's lot or whoever) they were always going to be up against it & having to put extra debt on top of the current figure in this first year or two to put in place there way to build the club back up, We all know players are the priority but we have till Sept 1st to get players in, we need 5 minimum with 3 being Strikers, if we could get 2 strikers in by next week & a winger before Aug 9th then things get a little easier leaving us to get in 2 more players (creative midfielder & a 3rd striker maybe culley if he comes good) I have no doubt in time my mind will change if after 2 years at the club they've created aload of debt with nothing much changed at the club then we need to start worrying (let's all hope that doesn't happen) BUT for now I'm going to give them the benifit of the dealt for this season to get in place what will improve us on & off the field to be successful, I'm HOPING by this time next year we will be in a far better position in all departments to kick this club on & dreaming off starting the season in league 1 Just to add: I hope many of you manage to attend the fans forum in September & put your questions to the new owners as you've got a lot to say, to many on here would rather stay behind a desktop instead of saying it face to face I'd like to address a few points, Yellow Jam, as I expect your post is partly in response to some of the posts I've made on this thread, which have been backed by some posters. Firstly, I was very critical of IL in previous posts, in fact I wrote a post stating in my view IL had sold DE a pup. Our £8M debt is partly due to his poor stewardship. Furthermore he should have written off some of the debt when selling - why should "investment" always be in the form of a soft loan, that's not a real investment. If IL had done well at OUFC he'd have seen a return on his money. He didn't so surely a loss should be involved. Furthermore if the Oxfordshire Consortium had got the club it would have been on the basis of CLEARING the debt - so IL didn't make a decision based on what was best for OUFC. I do not believe most posters on here blame Eales and Ashton for the debt, how can we, they didn't rack it up. No, but I do question the wisdom of allowing IL to remain and I have questioned some of their decision making. But that's the point - putting forward a view that the regime should have put more money into the playing budget is not moaning, or blaming the new guys for the debt, it is simply a fan's view of the how things been done. Most fans I've spoken to share this view. I share your hope that the club will get to a better place. That's what everyone wants! I understand your view that they deserve some time, but we deserve the right to question their decisions. Lastly, I and several others who have been questioning did put forward our questions to Oxvox that we wanted them to ask the new regime. The ones that were not adequately answered will be asked again at the fans forum. Why should IL have written of the debt with his money? Also how could anyone have avoided racking up the debt, regardless of ownership? I cannot recall IL going on a spending spree or being wreckless with the finances (well maybe the ridiculous sports science trying to avoid injuries thing). I am much more concerned with the current owners spending. Paying up a 2 year contract for Gary Waddock, the cost of the additional backroom staff and it has just begun. Fine if the owners are coughing up the money, but if it is added to OUFC's debt then I am really worried.

What length of time does imminent =? Before wolves(possibly) But if its not before Wolves we will see another meltdown here. The timing between now and the first game is not the key thing for me, its the quality of the signing. If it means waiting another week or 10 days to get the right person then that is fine with me

If Appleton wants to get his the majority of his business done before the Wolves game I'd imagine we might see one come in tomorrow.

Is rather get it right than 'rush it' most of our fans seemed patient enough with a 9 goal a season striker up front for last 3 seasons so what's the rush now? Measure twice, cut once. We've got until the 1st September, and then again in January, to get a winning squad together. I'm happy to afford the new team the patience that others merrily afforded Wilder and Lenegan while we treaded water. The new team seem far better a bet than what we had before ... and they haven't ran around like headless chickens in the first 20 odd days. Bodes well COYY!

It's all well and good saying when we would like someone to arrive, but the thing is it's not always that simple, you could have the right person lined up but if they don't sign straight away then you just have to wait

Surely the point of this quality management team put in place is to convince premiership and championship teams to provide 2 or 3 season long loans of their best young players like Tottenham and Swindon arranged last season?
Their wages would not be an issue with regards to our budget and allow us to buy 1 or 2 top quality senior/experienced players. I could then envisage us have a squad capable of a serious challenge.
Otherwise I cannot see any point in employing DF alongside MA; two good coaches but neither with any serious experience at this level of football.

It doesn't happen at Chelsea, Man Utd or pretty much anywhere so lets not expect it here. Would your preference to be no further signings and not increase the debt ? Just maybe in the short term they feel that the spending has to happen to encourage larger crowds and therefore its speculating to accumulate which I think it was most on here have been demanding for ages

We have been left woefully short by IL and what is happening now is necessary just to get us to the level that we should have been all along. We can't have it both ways, and I'm all for this approach, as let's face it, IL's penny pinching didn't actually work as we were going around and down in ever decreasing circles, whilst the debt still increased. I was an advocate of the Oxfordshire consortium, but am cautiously optimistic about things at the moment. But this is Oxford United, and we've been kicked in the teeth so many times, that I fully understand if people are hesitant about the future.

If people are happy and able to outlay with hope that's fine but some have to be more prudent especially where family are concerned.

Please no one take this the wrong way, I too am desperado for some new additions. Delighted a midfielder is on his way, concerned from the article that the work at the top end of the pitch still isn't quite sorted.....quite is a stupid word.......I am bloody steaming that we haven't got any forward/offensive players in!!!!! But my question.......why a defender? Why? Unless we are letting someone go..........we don't need any bloody defenders. We have got Hunt, Newey, Meades, Raynes, Mullins, Wright, Long and capable youngsters as understudies. So why? f*ck defenders......lets get some bloke who might be able to score a goal or 20.

Seriously, what's the mindset with brining in a defender? Appleton must be desperate for some forward players. Surely one or two are going to be announced as a surprise to me and all the doubting thomas'.

Mate, I know I am in a minority, but if MAPP sees what I see in Jake Wright, then hopefully JW is leaving. For me, JW has no leadership skills, and I am totally sick of hearing about how he feels: "we've let the management down, and we'll put it right on the pitch", and: "he's different class". I watched JW away at West Ham in the cup, and know he's a talented player, but boy, has he been doing the bare minimum since. He is silent on the pitch, and for my money, not committed and needed to go with CW to Northampton. So if the defender is replacing JW - then I am all for it.

I think he makes it pretty clear in the article that he is planning on strengthening the attacking options with more than one player. I'll be interested to see the calibre of player that I assume we will sign today. Should be a good indicator of what level of forward players we can expect in the coming days. In terms of the mindset of bringing in a defender, Appleton has now had long enough with the squad to decide where he wants to strengthen. If he thinks there is a weakness in our defense which can be improved then I am delighted he is doing something about it.

After all he might just have knocked out all the negativity wilder instilled into him?

Where are the forwards we need to score goals and at least be competitive? The balance of the squad is not right. 7 x 1st team defenders and 1 striker!
At the moment we have one senior centre forward recently recruited by G Waddock - D Hylton and youth team forward Roberts.
I understand T Marsh may be loaned out but we should hold on to him till we get additional forward(s) reinforcements.
OUFC priorities should be 2 x forwards and a winger minimum!
Top coaches and crass decision making! This is not rocket science!

" Appleton, who is also looking to significantly strengthen his forward line, was confident on Saturday he would be able to work with at least one in training today. The U’s head coach said: “As far as I’m concerned, come training Monday morning we should have one new face and hopefully two. “The two that we expect are very key to what we want to do. “ Beyond that obviously we have still got a bit of time, but there’s still a lot of work to do, especially at the top end of the pitch." The manager is getting strikers in and is aware of the amount of work that has to be done.

Wingers are historical players like outside halves. 442 is dead and Appleton prefers 4231 it seems. Why do people keep banging on about wingers?
My guess is that Darcy Blake is the definite signing and Gillet is the hopeful one.
