As the table began to take shape in the 95/96 season, we found ourselves sitting just outside the playoff places, but just one point behind opponents Stockport who were then occupying the final playoff spot. The match is notable for being Joey Beauchamp's debut appearance back in a yellow shirt after a couple of disastrous transfers and it wasn't long before his influence was felt, as we took the lead just 6 minutes in. Stockport equalised soon after, however a towering Paul Moody header settled the match before half time.

Right in the middle of our unstoppable run to promotion, this match was the one blip in our form during the final months of the season, coming in to the match having won 7 from our last 8 games, we left Edgeley Park with nothing. Lining up without Matt Elliott, our defense was considerably weaker than usual and it showed as we conceded first after failing to clear our lines after a long throw in to the box. A moment of Joey Beauchamp magic levelled the scores, but more poor defending from a cross saw us a goal behind again soon after. A second half goal from Martin Aldridge levelled things again, but two late Stockport goals sealed it, ex-scummer Andy Mutch scoring a hat-trick and stupidly celebrating in front of the travelling Oxford fans. Elliott's replacement that day, Steve Wood, would never wear the yellow shirt again.

Going into this match there was cause for concern, having started the season disappointingly and were sitting in 19th position, while Stockport were just outside the playoffs. Our concerns beforehand were quickly confirmed, as we shipped three goals in the first half. After scoring two very late goals in the final 6 minutes it appeared as if we might stage a remarkable comeback but it proved to be too late and we headed home with another defeat.

Under Malcolm Shotton's stewardship we had managed to slightly improve our form, having been in serious trouble at one point. Sitting in 15th and just 4 points clear of the relegation zone we were still perilously close to relegation when we welcomed Stockport to the Manor, who were in 8th place and just 2 points from the playoffs and a place in the Premiership. However, it was the wrong time for them to be playing us as we were starting to put together a decent run of form, and we somehow managed to put 3 past them. Steve Davis got the first from a corner, new loan signing O'Neill Donaldson got the second and Kevin Francis the third, looking remarkably like Bambi as he picked his way past the Stockport defence before blasting in from an angle.

A poor Stockport side came and took all three points in a frustrating afternoon with a dominant Oxford somehow failing to get on the scoresheet despite creating numerous chances, conceding a sloppy goal to give Stockport an undeserved win. In the first half we dominated but spurned a shedload of chances, including a golden chance that fell to Matt Green; one on one with the keeper he then allowed the centre backs to catch up with the chance eventually coming to nothing. Disaster struck in the 41st minute when a rare ball into the box from Stockport was not dealt with and on loan striker George Donnelly was gifted a free header. From then on Stockport defended in numbers, but for all our dominant play we were unable to score, James Constable heading against the post from just two yards. The ball eventually went in the net towards the end of the match, but was disallowed for offside, capping off an afternoon of frustration.
