Looking at an old programme from the 1979/1980 season when Bill Asprey was in charge , United were getting home gates of 3,500.
But when Utd hosted fellow third division outfit Wednesday in early March 1980 (just a couple of months after the Owls thrashed bitter local rivals Sheff. Utd in from of more that 49,000 at Hillsborough) it was estimated that 6,000+ Wednesday fans invaded the Manor in a 9,353 gate. They were everywhere including the London Road.
It was reported to be the highest ever away following for a match at the Manor.
We lost 0-2.

Big Jack Charlton was their boss at the time.
I remember they had a decent right winger in Terry Curran.

Seem to remember Gary Megson running the game in midfield.

Was it in FA cup?,they were in the old first division I think?,no giant killing though, lost 3-0?,bit of a dissapointment if I recall as we were flying high at the time?

From what i can remember they needed to win to get a very early promotion,we were doing pretty crap, there were at least 5000 away fans and at least 2000 in the London road,it was the first time i can remember the LR being effectively taken although 'm not sure you could count it as taken as there were still Oxford in there and i dont think there was actually any trouble,i watchd the match from the beech road stand and have some crappy photos somewhere of it.

I don't recal the 1980 game as i was way too young but i remember going to the cup game in 84. They were top of Div 2 and we were top of Div 3 if i recall. They absolutely played us off the park that day. Probably the only club to do so in that entire season - a season that included 3 games against Man Utd....

It was a lively day. They just kept pouring in from all directions, had all the Cuckoo Lane then started filling the Osler and the RIGHT side of the LRT. The left side remained Oxford (probably thanks to the fence). Seem to remember Sheff Utd doing similar and the scrapping poured onto the pitch as the were "evicted".

Not as i remember it, I was in the left and it was full of Wednesday,we got battered down to the front and jumped into the moat, jumped on to the pitch into the osler rd and then back into the right hand side. Watched the whole game from the right hand side (the only time i ever did)and the left was packed with Wednesday.

I remember this game well. To be fair a group of Oxford kept singing throughout the game. Wednesday were everywhere but Oxford still stood their ground (well some did anyway).
Soon after we played Sheffield United who brought less fans but consisted of big, fat blokes in donkey jackets.
Anyone remember Sheffield United in the mid 1980s? What a day, all those people on the pitch.
