This match against 4th Division Hereford came early in the 84/85 season which saw us promoted to the First Division as champions, and was also the first round of a League Cup campaign in which we would later knock Arsenal out of the competition in the third round at the Manor, before losing away at Ipswich. The sides had drawn 2-2 in the first leg at Hereford's Edgar Street ground leaving the outcome of the tie to be decided at the Manor. Goals from Hamilton and Aldridge took us through to half time with a healthy 2 goal lead. The lead was extended to 3 not long after the break with another goal from Hamilton, but after this the match went a little goal-crazy with 4 goals in 6 minutes. Hereford pulled a goal back, though this was cancelled out within a minute by Aldridge. Hereford rallied and pulled back 2 goals to make the score a not-so-comfortable 4-3 and were pushing hard for an equaliser. However, they pushed too far forward and a late goal from Hamilton (his third) finished the match off.

I see a pattern developing here, as the last time we played Hereford was at the beginning of another promotion season, which bodes well for us this year. We travelled away to 3rd Division (4th tier) Hereford in the first round of the League Cup fresh from a 1-0 opening day victory over Chesterfield, while Hereford had beaten Barnet 4-1. It took a penalty to break the deadlock against a strong Hereford side who would finish the season in a playoff place. The home side pressed hard and created chances, but the difference in quality was apparent and a second half winner was enough to seal a routine victory to take a 2-0 lead into the second leg a week later.

With a 2-0 lead from the first leg this match was as good as over within five minutes as Chrissy Allen scored an early goal, followed up with a second from Dave Smith and with a third added before half time from Paul Moody, a dominant first half performance was enough to seal a passage into the next round without breaking a sweat. The match could have become an embarrassment for Hereford, but in the second half, with no hope of turning things around, they dug in to at least save some face and scored 2 consolation goals.

Oxford followed on from the first win of the season with our first away win at strugglers Hereford, who had just erected a new temporary stand for away fans in time for this match. We dominated the match and arguably could have won by more goals after creating lots of chances, but James Constable finally opened the scoring on 35 minutes, needing two attempts to put the ball in the net. The score was doubled on 65 minutes, Tom Craddock netting his first goal with a beautiful striike from just outside the area.
