Having lost our unbeaten league record a couple of weeks previously at Gravesend, there was pressure to go on another similar unbeaten run. An unconvincing 2-1 victory at home to Tamworth had done little to allay fears of a loss of form, which got a lot worse after Stevenage took a two goal lead with Steve Morison scoring a brace after capitalising on poor defending - this coming despite being a man down after a first half sending off. The second half was much better, with Yemi Odubade coming off the bench to terrify the Stevenage defenders and set up Duffy to put United back in the match. Stevenage then had a second man sent off and the resulting free kick led to the equaliser, with Chris Hargreaves getting his head to Andy Burgess' ball, and despite late pressure brought about by our numerical advantage the score remained level.

Having fallen 10 points behind leaders Dagenham, there was an added importance to this match, with it being vital not to drop any more points and fall further behind. Stevenage, after an inconsistent season, had begun to pick up some form, making this a challenging match. Fortunately, we were picking up form ourselves and ran out 2-0 winners, with Matt Day opening the scoring in the first half with a header from a corner, and Anaclet scoring the second in the second half.

This was one of the better performances in an inconsistent season, with Matt Green, then on loan from Cardiff, getting on the scoresheet again in a victory over playoff-chasing Stevenage. Phil Trainer headed in Anaclet's cross for the opening goal in the first half, but Stevenage levelled the score midway through the second half with a shot from outside the box. However, it wasn't level for long, as just three minutes later Matt Green managed to manouver himself into space in the penalty area and rifled home to give Oxford the points.

Another inconsistent start for both Stevenage and Oxford resulted in a general air of despondency surrounding this match, as by December it seemed apparent that things were no better than they had been a year before, for which Darren Patterson had lost his job a few weeks previously. Jim Smith led the side out for the last time in his stint as caretaker manager, before the appointment of Chris Wilder, to see his inherited side play out a draw, meaning that he was unbeaten as caretaker manager. Stevenage had taken the lead with a strike from the edge of the area, but Oxford fought back to equalise just before half time, with James Constable netting from a corner. The second half was goalless, to leave us in midtable at Christmas.

Under Chris Wilder's management, we had somehow managed to turn the season around to be challenging for the playoffs. However, it was always going to be an uphill struggle when contending with the points deduction which ultimately proved our downfall. We travelled to fellow challengers Stevenage Borough in huge numbers, needing a win. The match started badly, with Damian Batt being sent off in the first half, though we managed to survive until half time with the scores level. However, Stevenage took the lead shortly after half time and any hopes of getting something from this match evaporated. However, after Chapman was brought down in the penalty area, James Constable's penalty salvaged a draw from the jaws of defeat to keep our playoff aspirations alive.

An early meeting between two promotion favourites resulted in an Oxford victory, after Stevenage started the season slowly, while Oxford remained unbeaten with eyes firmly on top spot. Stevenage played a spoiling game, trying to bully their way to victory, but unlike Oxford sides of the past this team dug in and produced a performance against physical opponents. Alfie Potter scored the opening goal after 21 minutes, controlling beautifully with his chest and volleying home to give Oxford the lead. Adam Murray struck a fantastic volley in the second half to seal the points, but there was still time for former Oxford striker Yemi Odubade to make things uncomfortable as he scored a late goal in front of the Oxford Mail end, but it proved not to be enough and Oxford fans went home happy.

In our last away match we finally kept our first clean sheet in what felt like forever and we repeated the feat again in this one, keeping it tight at the back to earn an away draw at Stevenage. It was a lively start to the match as Stevenage hit the bar in the first minute only for Oxford to quickly go up the other end and also hit the woodwork through Tom Craddock. Craddock again hit the post later on in the first half, and it seemed obvious at this point that the ball was not going to go into the net. The match tailed off in the second half, Oxford tired and there were far fewer chances with neither goal being much troubled.
