Say what you like about Scottish football but I dont think there is a game anywhere that rivals the intensity of this fixture. In the main, youve got ex english championship players and second rate europeans with a few journeymen chucked in but it doesnt half provide a game !
Every tackle is contested like its the last they will ever make and theres always loads of bookings, sendings offs and skirmishes. Short on technical skill but through the roof on entertainment.
By the way, there was a save in that game by Mcgregor that will talked about as one of the best ever seen. A ball to the fa r post was knocked back into Samaras who was four yards out, he connected powerfully and mcgregor somehow turned it up and over from on his goal line. Astonishing save. fergie was in the crowd and i can think of no other player he'd have been watching other than mcgregor.

The thing with the old firm is that it's not just football rivalry.
In Manchester, Liverpool, etc, there will be fans of both teams in families.
In Glasgow it's political, religious and footballing rivalry. You don't choose Celtic or Rangers, it chooses you. That's why it's so intense.

However, I would say that because nearly all other teams have such poor crowds, if you support either Celtic or Rangers it is nearly the only game to look foward too each year. In England there are many more games each year, for each team, that provide some intensity although not to the level of the Old Firm..

Entirely agree with Baldy on this one. I would LOVE to go to an Old Firm game before I pop my clogs. City/United, Liverpool/Everton, Spurs/Arsenal just don't hold the same fascination. The atmosphere always sounds closest you'll get in the UK to some of the berserk support of Latin America.

Attended quite a few old firm games over the years, its not what it used to be like its pretty calm these days!
People always bring the religious thing into it but the truth is a lot of families in Glasgow are now mixed and i know a few who are brothers and one supports Rangers and the other supports celtic.
And there are RC Gers fans and Protestant celtic fans!
Its more of a political rivalry these days than anything else
And McGregor is a first class keeper, i should be at the replay if i can change a couple of meetings around!
Rangers were poor in the 2nd half but i reckon they can still win the replay.

Something I didnt realise until Saturday is that apparently most of Glasgow is Celtic (with a few Rangers estates) and the mass of the Rangers fans come from the surrounding towns, villages and suburbs.

Interestingly Bridgeton, which is in the heart of East End Celtic territory, has always been staunchly Protestant.

That is not correct, although Rangers have the largest support in Scotland as a whole. RC's make up 16% of the Scottish population and most of them are not just living in Glasgow.

A lad I met on Saturday who is an Ayr United fan, and hails from Ayr, suggested otherwise.

I really didn't think that was the case. I have been to Glasgow a few times and when I was there the majority seemed Rangers supporters, even walking up London road towards Celtics ground was all Rangers and Bridgeton is definatly staunchly Rangers, I know down the other way down Gallowgate towards Bairds bar and bar 67 it is Celtic territory but for me Glasgow was definatly more Rangers. The only time there seemed a lot of Celtic fans was when there was a match on and loads had come over from the Republic of Ireland although I know when I was there and Rangers where playing their support was boosted with a lot of supporters from Ulster. Rangers also get a lot of support from Ayr too.

There are 172,000 Church of Scotland followers, 169,000 Roman Catholic, 24,000 other Christian, 18,000 Muslim and 10,000 following other religions. There are large numbers stating "no religion", or not answering the question. EDIT - The only Local Authority District where Catholics outnumber Protestants is Inverclyde (Greenock area).

Can't see this being correct when most Scots are CofS As for Glasgow there is no way its got more RC than CofS, there is a large amont of them and theres no doubt about that though Ayrshire is very much Rangers always has been

They're not made up. As I said, a significant number chose not to select any religion. In Glasgow, the figures show there are, marginally, more Church of Scotland than Roman Catholic. You must have misread it. The figures show Ayrshire is clearly dominated by Protestants who are presumably Rangers fans. So no dispute there.
