..at Preistfield was very good yesterday. Front row right side, plenty of leg room - out of the wind, not too cold - running commentary from the guy behind was very good.
Quite a surprise really as the journey was a bit of a nightmare! Train from Bicester - but there was no train (Bus). Tube from Marylebone - but there was no tube (Bus) St Pancras - poor info on trains & platforms resulted in a 5 mile hike around Kings Cross & St Pancras before we found a deserted platform with no seating where a Gillingham train eventually appeared - despite notification that it was terminated .... (they have to get better for 2012) Hey Ho - the train was pretty good though - clean & fast.
Arrival at the top of Priestfield road only confirmed what I had seen on "streetview" - A bit like Gravesend - but without the class!
A gentle stroll down through the litter strewn streets enabled us to truly savour the atmosphere and view - in anticipation - the glorious away stand in the distance. As we walked, I noted, with interest, that one house had the same rubbish, plastic kids toys, fridge etc. in the front garden as could be seen in `streetview`
Listening to the Kent accents of the locals - I was reminded of walking through Oxford centre or Regent street - Kent is obviously a part of the former Soviet Union, as harsh eastern block chatter seemed to fill the air.
Into the ground, then - I found the stewards very helpful and not phased at all by the threat of a `sixties something saga lout`Taking only a passing interest in my flask & bottle of water.
The youngsters running the grub stall were equally helpful. However, when I asked for a double Vodka & coke, they were unable to help but apologetic in the extreme and so I settled for a Tea.
The game was "Interesting" if a bit difficult to interpret as all the first half action seemed to be at the far end and most of the second half action was at ....the far end. My rheumy old eyes were struggling. But the commentary from behind kept me in the picture . Although I did see the blatant elbow from a Gills defender? which drew an instant `no card nothing` from the Ref Was this the same defender who, away in the distance, stamped on someone in the first half? - If so I guess the Ref can be described as "consistent"
I would (like most it seems) have taken a point at Kick Off. So all in all not too bad.
After all - Clean sheets for Ox4d are as rare as clean sheets on a teenage boys bed....
The journey back to Bicester was much better, thank you.
