The system did not work, save for the first fifteen minutes. Our forwards were not really in the game as the balance in midfield didn't feel right and our full backs were unable to push on. Heslop looked well off the pace and looked distinctly 'off colour' in midfield looking unsure of his role.
At the back we made customary mistakes as the Southend pressure built in the final twenty minutes of the first half as we failed to win possession and allowed far too many balls to get into our penalty area. Tonkin put the ball on a plate for Hall's equaliser with a poor attempt at a clearance and we again switched off at a left wing corner - allowing Southend a free header which was eventually scrambled into the goal.
So for me plenty of fives and sixes out of ten. McLaren gets a seven as does Hackney who came on and looked the business. Batt - poor again away from home.
Overall Southend did a job on us for the second time in a month. They press the ball well, are very fit and were visably stonger and more physical than us. Once they got to grips with us after 20 minutes they were worth their win.

Sounds a bit like the Northampton game. Is there an issue here? Also sounds a bit like Stevenage, so possibly more points dropped soon

Getting fed up with a lot of drivel about nothing in particular on this forum and not enough on how we are playing. Strikes me that we capable of being bullied on occasion. Can' t see us getting much at Gills on Sat, they play a similar way to Southend. Still, it's been a very interesting season to date. Thousand times better than worrying about how Luton and Crawley are doing..

fair report SuperOx. Hackney looked to worry them and we could have nicked a point esp if Batt hadn't got a red. Cant see why not yellow but had a poor view and havent seen replay. Think ref was a prancing peacock ..coiffured to boot! Think I read on a Sarfend board hed given out 80 odd yellows and 4 reds in 22 games before last night and as predicted he ruined the game (for Oxford anyway).. Wilder was incensed.. probably rightly. Heslop to start..mmm not sure. They were pretty quick to get onto Maclaren...but he was ok if not great. We didnt give them enough of a battle in midfield and last 20 of 1st half they kept on coming at Oxford incessantly..we didnt keep the ball for long enough to give our defence a break. Needed a combative "fighter" in midfield..we're too bloody nice tbh!..Danny Bulman anyone? Tonkin was little unlucky that his mis-clearance went straight to their player who was given time to get the ball under control and rather luckily got it through Worleys legs for the goal? On another day we might have got away with that but the real problem was we couldn't get any respite by keeping the damn ball for longer at the end of the 1st half.
Maclean gave the ball away a few times and was "dealt with" pretty effectively by their defence (Bilel is a good player as were the others) Presumably Sturrock knows how to deal with Maclean and I thought he was a bit disappointing (and probably disappointed!).
Beano had a good chance in the middle of the goals second half but headed a bit weakly I thought and straight at Evans (Corr would have buried it I'd say). Disappointing and those diagonal balls being whipped in esp from their left show teams know we have a weakness. Watched Clarkey carefully..he seemed edgy.
We need to shoot more, preferably on target..towards the end Alfie skipped across a line of defenders going past two (from the RH side looking from behind the goal) ...& just for a split-second he had an opening to shoot from relatively close range but he went on and the 3rd defender got the ball away.
