This match away at Southend came on the back of a run of four draws, the last which was a remarkable 5-5 home draw with Portsmouth, coming back from 5-2 down and scoring two goals in the last couple of minutes to somehow earn a point. Unbeaten throughout October and November we went into the match confident of getting at least a point against struggling Southend. In fact, we came away with three points and three goals, courtesy of a quick brace from John Durnin and another from Dave Penney, all in the first half.

Visitors Southend, sitting in the relegation places, visited at the ideal time for them, as we were on a four-game losing streak at the time, having lost to their fellow strugglers Birmingham the previous weekend. Another dismal performance saw yet another home defeat to relegation candidates, with Stan Collymore netting Southend's winner to further deepen the gloom around the Manor.

A dismal start to the season saw Oxford struggling in the league and already becoming sucked into a relegation dogfight, having won just three matches all season - though victory over Stoke the previous week appeared to be a step in the right direction. Having one of the leakiest defences in the whole division (who had kept just one clean sheet all season), and having already been thrashed 5-1 at Tranmere in the League Cup, it was perhaps inevitable that a trip to high-flying Southend would result in defeat, though few would have predicted the disastrous 6-1 mauling that would result. A young Tommy Mooney (with hair!) opened the scoring and would go on to net a hat-trick, as Oxford went in at half time trailing 4-0. A good goal from Penney in the second half provided some consolation, but Southend responded with two more of their own, capping a day of abject misery.

Having not won in the league in almost two months, and having already been demolished by Southend earlier in the season, it may have been reasonable to expect a similarly poor outcome in what had become a depressing centenary season. However, the heavy defeat at the hands of our opponents back in October seemed to spur the players on, seeking revenge for their humiliation, and they delivered a positive performance that left many hopeful of avoiding the drop. Despite playing some great football and creating numerous chances, the first half was a frustrating one as we failed to break the deadlock. However, this changed in the second half when Cusack headed in for the opener, before conceding a disappointing equaliser which highlighted the team's defensive frailties. Fortunately, Cusack sealed the win, scoring on the rebound after Anton Rogan's shot was palmed out by the keeper.

Our first home league match into our first season back in the second tier could not have gone much better, starting the Manor Ground campaign with a 5-0 demolition of Southend. The first came from a diving header by Joey Beauchamp, meeting Les Robinson's cross, and Nigel Jemson doubled the lead by slotting through the Southend keeper's legs. Beauchamp's second headed goal brought the score up to 3-0 at half time. Oxford's dominance continued into the second half as Jemson scored again, and David Rush sealed a flawless performance and a fantastic victory with the fifth.

It was late in the season and while midtable Oxford had nothing to play for, bottom of the league Southend would need a miracle to stay up, meaning that this match had very little riding on it. 1-0 down at half time and then 2-0 down not long after, it looked as if this would be a miserable afternoon for the travelling Oxford fans, but the match soon began to turn in Oxford's favour, beginning with the sending off of future Oxford 'star' Leo Roget in farcical circumstances. Soon after, Nigel Jemson pulled a goal back for Oxford and then Martin Aldridge salvaged a draw with a late equaliser.

League One Southend visited in the second round of the FA Cup and 5000 fans turned out for the now rare opportunity to watch Football League opposition. However, dreadful conditions and rubbish football ruined the spectacle somewhat and the two clubs played out a 0-0 draw. In Oxford's defence, to hold a side challenging near the top of the league two divisions higher was an achievement of sorts, but ultimately meaningless if followed up by a defeat in the replay...

Southend, 56 places higher than Oxford, proved too strong to overcome in the replay to gain a 'prestigious' third round tie at home to Dagenham and Redbridge. Southend were ahead within 5 minutes of the match starting and never looked like losing from then on, with a dominant performance and a comfortable win. They won a penalty later in the first half, which was well saved by Billy Turley but was unable to save a second spotkick later in the first half, despite diving the right way. A late third goal was merely the icing on the cake for Southend, while for Oxford attention turned to the FA Trophy and a fixture against Tonbridge Angels.

Our first match of 2011 was a disappointing and frustrating one, as an Oxford side who had been improving and beginning to pick up some good results slumped to a disappointing home defeat. It was a poor performance from start to finish as Oxford were outplayed and in truth never really got going. Southend's opening goal came in the 18th minute after the defence failed to deal with a corner, the ball travelling through a forest of legs before slamming into the back of the net. The second came as a result of yet more poor defending, with the ball being given away cheaply to allow Southend's Sean Clohessy to put in a sliced cross, which flukily sailed over the stranded Ryan Clarke and into the top corner. The game was effectively over then, as Oxford failed to mount a serious challenge in the second half and Southend were able to see the match out for the remaining half.
