The Shrewsbury manager is apparently interested in the Sunderland job. Nothing like a bit of loyalty eh? Top of league 1 and he thinks he’s Sam Allardyce!

Good timing too as they’ve just lost their first game!
I really hope it unsettles the team as their success so far this year has been far too good. Every time I drive down the A5 past the ground I can’t help glancing across. Seeing STFC written in their seats makes me dislike them all the more.

Another manager’s eyes and ears are opened by a big but fundamentally flawed job further up the league whilst achieving exactly nowt with Shrewsbury.
MApp by his own admission made similar errors in his managerial career at the beginning by charging into every job going. Sure, Blackburn may appear to be a good gig, but Blackburn run by the Venky’s family? No chance. It very nearly cost him a managerial career at all and only a benevolent and very patient board here managed to get him back into the headlines again.
If I were Paul Hurst, I’d stay put. They have a reasonable if limited set up at Shrewsbury, have the best team they’ve had in years and could well be on course for second tier football in God knows how long. Why risk that for the poisoned chalice Sunderland gig? Sunderland hire-and-fire at will, have a restless fan base and need a lot of work in clearing deadwood and bringing that wage bill down. Hurst (and his predecessor Mellon) have put something worthwhile in place at Shrewsbury and he should aim to finish the job with a promotion there.
Yeah, the payoff if he leaves messes up will be big, but at the cost of getting back into the managerial game. Stick with Shrewsbury, be patient and get them up and then do your due diligence on your next job.

Hurst would be a good fit. I think he’d turn Sunderland round after struggling for years. Obviously a big pay rise, chance to motivate good players and the opportunity to be recognised
