I hope the drum that was present at today's game in the East Stand was just due to the Military Day.....

i thought that it was fine. Was not just inane drumming- it accompanied singing.
Thought the Ultras did well today - just a shamed that they couldn't have been in the middle of the Stand.

Thought they did well, kept it going all game, not overly loud from the north stand, but think that was the weather, could hardly hear that army band either

Thought it was fine, as already said it wasn't over used so I have no problem with it
Is the far right corner the new home of the ultras/singing section? If so i'll look to sit over there and hopefully a few more of the general fans who want to sing do too

Absolutely good luck to them, if a drum helps with the atmosphere then so be it .

Ultras sounded great today and the East Stand was much louder than I’ve heard it for a while

Ah, drum thread, I've been expecting you We knew this would be a veryyy controversial choice today, lots of our fans hate the things! The reason for it, simply, is that in recent times our fans have proven that we can't clap or sing in time. Clapping gets faster and faster, ditto with the singing, meaning everything dies out far too quickly. Not only that, but when someone bangs a seat (or wall away from home) our fans seem to sing 10x louder. All attributes that point to badly needing a drum (unfortunately!). Also, it does seem to get rid of the awkward silences which put people off belting out at full volume I think the general thoughts in peoples mind when you say football drum are the small northern clubs who bang an insanely loud drum inanely for 90 minutes, we'd never want that because that's winds us up just as much as everyone else! Saying that, the greatest atmospheres in the world ie. Dortmund, Ajax, Celtic, San Lorenzo, Red Star, PAOK and our friends at Hertha, they all use drums. Better to think of those clubs when you hear drum, instead of the Wycombes of this world! We opted for a snare drum, used regularly at Ajax, because it's more of a clapping sound rather than a low frequency... well "drum" noise. Hopefully it wasn't too intrusive and only used when necessary today. We have an experienced drummer in our ranks but he wasn't there today. The new section worked well, although the wind certainly didn't help the noise. Allowed lots of young lads to come over and join in, which they previously couldn't in the centre at the back. And turning round seeing 30 or so bouncing in unison together after the goal was amazing, really. Never expected that for the first game and certainly shows theres big potential for us to grow now. Also, being closer to the North Stand was also a bonus, saw lots of kids in the family section clapping and even dancing along. Hopefully that leaves an impression on them, and they're still far enough away to not hear any bleating every time we miss a penalty And I don't think (although others may disagree) it affected the East Stand atmosphere in a negative way either. Still lots of loud belting songs and the whole stand joining in, seemed no different to usual in that respect! If we'd have stayed where we were, Block 19, we'd have slowly dwindled and died off. But moving into an area with lots of space to grow, hopefully we can now do exactly that. Apologies if we annoyed any season ticket regulars in Block 21 today, we knew we'd be invading some space but we studied the ticket sales pre-match and tried to choose wisely

I often think the 'Ultras' or whatever you want to call them live in a bubble. Atmosphere was no different than normal today. Majority of fans do not sing along with the newer songs as they dont know the words.. can't hear them or don't want to sing the same song over and over about one player just because his name fits a catchy tune regardless of his contribution to the game. The Tony Martinez last season being the prime example. The most joined in chants are always the simple traditional ones. Maybe not witty or unique but certainly backing the team. There was nothing European or Ajax about that drum it was very much Rushden & Diamonds or Wycombe... pointless and pathetic in my opinion. Sing dance enjoy yourselves, have fun, do what you want but don't think bringing a drum will make a jot of difference to the atmosphere. Drums are tinpot...

This is interesting.
Ever since they first appeared at games I've been 100% against drums, thinking of them as everything that symbolises tinpotedness. What is interesting is that, from my position on the halfway line of the North Stand, I was aware that the ultra lads had moved, was aware that it was a bit of a better atmosphere than it might have been on such an awful day, but totally oblivious to the fact there was a drum! I genuinely did not realise, until reading this thread, that there was a drum!
Not sure what to conclude from that, other than drums MAY not be as annoying as I previously thought. I'd say carry on with it (the drum) but most definitely the move over to the new area worked. Keep it up lads.

I bring myself, my 100% backing of the team, my biased attitude towards the referee, my intense dislike of the opposition. I sing, clap, hold my head in frustration, shout til I'm hoarse, hurt my shins on the seat in front and love every minute. I manage all this without the need of a drum. Oh and as for misery I never bring it but have left with it many times over the years.

Yeah I didn't know there was a drum till someone told me at half time.
I couldn't agree more with the timing issues, normally 3 different renditions of the same song. However I feel the move further away from the middle drum or no drum actually made the out of time-ness worse on the left side today. I am all for trying new stuff, and salute your efforts. Hopefully against Northampton with better conditions and shit opposition it'll prove more fruitful.
In a way I wish you guys could just line across the back, people can stay in time if there is a loud enough beat to stick to.
