United contract offers rather than free agentsI am quite glad that we aren't going to panic and look into the free agent market. They are free agents for a reason. What does concern me is the long list of players out of contract at the end of the season. If part of our business model is to sell a player each season then I think we will struggle next year as most can leave on a free! I feel the recruitment over the summer was a backward step, and glad that some of the ones bought in are only on a years contract. If we wanted to keep our business model sustainable we needed to bring in younger promising players with something to prove, not older injury prone players. I fully understand that it was Clotet's first transfer window (and a short one at that), however, I would have thought Eales would have been more insistent on the type of players we should recruit. Unless it was all about getting players on the cheap.....

Of that list of players, you would imagine Curtis Nelson, Rob Hall, Josh Ruffles & Joe Rothwell will surely be offered deals sooner rather than later.
Imagine losing Curtis Nelson on a free!

I believe we have a 1 year option on Rothwell, Nelson and Hall, so effectively have contracts with them till June 2019.

Do both the club and player have to agree to the extension or is it a case that if the club want you you're automatically locked down for the further year?

Unless you are a Prem player, then you can throw your toys out of the pram and do whatever you want!

I'm not entirely sure, but since last summer we had 1 year options for both Lundstram and Sercombe, both of which the club extended (but clearly the players wanted to move on) I'd presume the decision rests with the club.

This is why our squad building hasn't been too bad.
prior to this season we had a young team...we have added some older players (with it experience?). However, Mousinho is the only 'older' player with a contract beyond a year.
Tiendalli, Thomas, Ricardinho, Williamson, Mehmeti, Shearer...it doesn't work out, they can leave in the summer...rather than lumbering ourselves with older players on long contracts (Defoe at Bournemouth...5 years at 34!).
So we have taken a bit of a punt with age and injuries, but surely mostly upside!

I am not against having a few experienced players, I think it is healthy to have a balance. My main concern is that we didnt appear to add value to our squad with promising young players (with high value potential)
