Catalan referendum: Barcelona protest by playing behind closed doors www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41459838Interesting to see the club making a political statement, given the events of the day. I wonder how many of the Barca team pictures wearing the Catalan flag on their shirts are Catalan? All, presumably?

Catalan referendum: Barcelona protest by playing behind closed doors www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41459838Interesting to see the club making a political statement, given the events of the day. I wonder how many of the Barca team pictures wearing the Catalan flag on their shirts are Catalan? All, presumably? Not really. Reports coming out of Barcelona, were that thousands of fans were planning a mass pitch invasion in the first minute, which would have big repercussions for the club. They tried to get the game played on Saturday, but the Real Madrid supporting chairman of La Liga insisted the match went ahead on referendum day. Barca tried to get the game postponed, but the same chairman said they would get a 6 point deduction if they did. No choice but to play behind closed doors.

Gerard Pique (who is Catalan) didn't want the game played at all and to take the 6 point hit but other players, alledgedly, wanted to play as it could affect their valuable bonuses related to winning trophies. The club basically left it to the players to decide if the game was played from what I've read.
Gerard Pique wanted and supported the referendum by voting. He hasn't said if he supports independence or not, just that the Catalans have a democratic right to decide. He was also horrified by the Police violence towards pro independence supporters. At Spain's home games recently (particularly the one in Murcia) he has been booed and heckled by the Spanish fans for backing having a Referendum with the likes of Sergio Ramos coming out and defending him. He was talking about retiring in 2018 from International football but is considering it now.

Fair play to Xemi for flying back to vote, too. It's something he clearly feels strongly about.

Does anyone know if Pep voted? Think I saw him liking a few things to do with the referendum on Twitter...

Spain are going all out jackboots through the arrest warrants/arrests for those on the Catalan side. Are Belgium going to play ball though as what I've read legally they can ignore the European arrest warrant as this isn't covered? They don't have to extradict either if they feel there won't be a fair trial which considering the Spanish Govt's actions so far isn't very likely.
