I am entertaining a couple of old friends and their wives... Saturday 26th August . We are taking in the Shrewsbury match and then on for a meal. I live in Aylesbury so we are staying at the Hampton that night.
Can anyone recommend a good eatery reasonably nearby...... tariff isn't particularly important as long as the menu is good.
Thanks in advance.

Seven stars in marsh Baldon, close to your hotel and good food, community owned pub great atmosphere. Or toot baldon has the mole, bit more upmarket but great food.

The Blackbird.
New Catalan inspired menu, in honour of Pep.

Thanks in advance. Millar and Carter Kidlington. Used to be a Harvester, now an upmarket steak house. Excellent food and service, pricey but worth every penny mate.

Of the first three:
No-one who likes food would eat in a Chef & Brewer. I ate at the Sevens Stars recently and found my friend's food looked unimaginative and a bit dull, my plaice was overcooked by 10 minutes and came with dry boiled spuds and peas from a freezer bag with no discernable dressing; the waitresses and some lunkhead appeared every 5 minutes demanding to know if I was enjoying my food and I was to intimidated by the wonderful atmosphere to tell them to f*ck off. The Mole has nice light-coloured tables and reasonably modish food for the noughties. It's OK.
If you like food try Arbequina or Pan Pan in Cowley Rd, St Clements area which are both actually good. No1shipstreet should be good judging by the management but I haven't been there yet - kid faggots, oysters - sounds quite modish yet grounded.

Try The Bell at Hampton Poyle. Lovely place with very nice food. Would need to book ahead mind. Couldn't agree more. Good service, interesting and thoughtful menu. Raymond Blanc has given it a good review and they have a daily fresh fish menu which is very impressive. I think you would probably be looking at £35 per head + drinks. With respect to the poster who recommended the Chef & Brewer, forget it it's an awful conveyer belt eaterie. Hope that helps.

it wasn't meant to be! in my defence I have never actually been in there, but staggered past it once and thought the beer garden looked like a nice spot. I was also quite inebriated when I posted that and hadn't spotted that it was chef and brewer. hopefully the OP will investigate some of the more sensible suggestions.

There's a particularly fine Greggs at Beaconsfield services that I could recommend. The "steak" and cheese roll is first rate.

....and so we descend into the depression known as fast 'food'. Actually there is a place in our culinary culture culture for such delights, it doesn't always flush, but there is a place......

Don't understand all this criticism of Chef and Brewer pubs ? Have all these critics actually tried the Chicken nuggets at the Kings Arms ? P.S.Chef and Brewer pubs are owned by Greene King, they are flagship eating establishments, more exclusive than the Hungry Horse brand !

Hope it was ok.
Don't know the Bell but if you like food the Chequers at Berrick Salome & the Rad Lion at (weirdly) Chalgrove are both good.
