Leading on from the lunny thread.
Trying to read between the lines as per previous oufc statements, eg "hoping to have a top six budget" and lunnys fee was undisclosed yet "attractive". Does this mean that when DE said that when they received the £2m follow on fees for Roofe and COD he stated in the oxford mail that, that money "more or less paid for this season".
Now do we take this literally or will that money be added to this seasons budget?

To quote DE; “We were fortunate last summer, despite the way certain things happen, that we sold Callum and Kemar. “The reality is that because of the way football deals are done, half the cashflow from those deals is due in July. “That more or less pays for this season, so the club is in fantastic shape financially.”Add in to the calculation the salary not being paid to Maguire and the non payment of any of the "big" deals that were reputedly offered to get McAleny, Lyndsay and possibly others then it should be that the club can afford to bring in someone of value if not two (striker & left back) So, as said, does that increase this seasons budget and will we see more spending?

I just cant see us spending any money. On the face of it we should have a bit of a "war chest" financially with all the departures compo etc, but when you get experience in from a higher league there is a bigger financial cost to that than a young loanee who the parent club might be helping with the wages, I still think the squad is a bit light and would hope to see one or two more decent signings before the start of the season.

Course it does, as he also said the season ticket rise would be to give mapp a bigger budget than last season. And with a player sale he would like to think that could become the dreaded top 6 budget .

That could mean anything, it doesn't meant it goes into transfer/wage budget.

I take as the club shouldn't run at a loss this season and may even turn a profit. Which in the grand scheme of things is the most important.

A bit of money spent on a couple of signings - left back and striker, and a couple of young players in on loan from higher up the pyramid - fast winger and attacking midfielder, and I'd be happy with the shape of the squad. I haven't seen this Dutch winger we have on trial so have no idea if he can fill a place in the squad?

I take as the club shouldn't run at a loss this season and may even turn a profit. Which in the grand scheme of things is the most important. Agree with Junior. What's more important is the club is sustainable IMO. Plenty of people on social media saying the usual rubbish about 'hot dog man' needing to 'sign someone urgently'. Do these people have any idea on how transfers actually work? Surely an additional 500k would alter the transfer plans? We may now go for someone who costs a bit more that we wouldn't have before. We may be weighing up whether to use that money on transfers or wages. Not only that, we have to get the right player. I don't want to see us go and blow money for the sake of it. Is there a case of Pep having to earn the right to be given permission for a big transfer fee? After all, MAPP didn't get given big transfer fee's till last summer did he? Not just that, how long do people believe a transfer takes? Lunny was meant to be tied up last Thursday and it took nearly an extra week. We've just finished 8th, been on a great ride and had an awful lot of upheaval this summer. Naturally, there will be disappointment but why some people are resorting to petty name calling to a man who is part of the foundations of this journey is beyond me. It's disrespectful and shows a lack of patience and knowledge. Let's face it, none of us really know too much about where we lie with our transfer targets as the club do well at keeping it private. It's a little bit embarrassing that some fans who I saw in Portugal who were fully behind all that was going on 2 weeks ago, are now slating the club and chairman because we've lost Lunny and Mags. All the more embarrassing that those people never bothered (or perhaps didn't have the bottle) to ask Darryl what was going on. Don't get me wrong, I'm not satisfied with the squad yet, but it's mind blowingly pathetic seeing people lose it because of their impatience and inability to understand how our progress is formed on this model.

Agreed. Some people are exceptionally fickle and they got their wish on a quick signing as we signed Mike Williamson.

Maybe we haven't identified anyone that Pep wants to spend money on? Maybe there are talks ongoing including fee signings that we don't know about? Could be any number of reasons, but there's not really evidence that we aren't trying to spend money...or that there isn't money to spend. I think every Oxford fan would (/should) hope that we spend money on the right players rather than just spray it around because it's there to spend.

I think that people need to just show a bit of patience. I have no doubts that there will be one or two quality players coming in (I assume there will be 2) plus maybe a couple of loan signings. In addition I assume that Roberts and Martin could be loaned out. At that stage we can look at the overall squad, the leaders in the squad, who will get the goals etc. At the moment the squad is not complete...

One thing I don't understand is fans that are doing the moaning about DE not reinvesting the money are the same ones worrying how much debt the club is in. In the last 2 years we have got nearlly 6million quid through transfers/compensation. The club were if I remember rightly roughly 10 million in debt at last check. To ensure the club has a long future then DE wouldn't and shouldn't just start splashing money out for the sake of it.
One other point, could it be a case of there not actually being the right type of player available that Pep wants?

That's probably it now!
Thought maybe one more plus two loans to come but we currently have a squad size of 27. That includes Stevens, Agboola, Baptiste, Napa and Ashby.

One other point, could it be a case of there not actually being the right type of player available that Pep wants? Interesting point the the debt. It is one heck of a balancing act. Sell too many players and not reinvest enough you run the risk of relegation. Even running the club optimally at break even or better and you run the risk of failing because many other clubs refuse to run themselves responsibly. There is no way a club like ours could break even at league 2 level, and from hearing on occasion the comments from DE there is doubt at league 1 level we can do the same. What does that leave, the championship, well to reach that level you simply have to spend. Even when we reach that level does that meam we will break even I don't know, the club still suffers massively fiancally from the stadium situation fiasco. Nearly all football clubs loose money curently to find a model that is different to that (and offers that keeps the fans happy and the club successful) is not easyin the slightest. As for the other point I don't agree that we have no options for a type of plyer Pep wants. We have this fabled scounting process with lists of targets and Pep has indicated he is happy to go with what they recommend inititally. So I find it unlikely we can't find at least some players that meet our requirements.

I disagree. Tiendalli & Williamson need us more than we need them. They will not be on much and are on short term deals. Add in Xemi who I very much doubt will be much. Henry will be collecting Maguire's wage, maybe a touch more.
I'd say there is plenty of room for Pep to do a deal or few in the coming weeks. Don't forever this is the first time he's had a sustained period of time watching and training the squad on home terf

The reply's to Oxvox seem to suggest the budget will be 15-20% up on last years playing budget of £2.8m No idea how that stacks up for this division, or if it gets us in the fabled top 6 that some people seem so obsessed about Was also commented that transfer fees were available and would be on top of that budget
All sounds very healthy, but proof will be in the pudding of course

From the Oxvox Q&A email with Eales:
The playing budget was £1.1m the season before I took over. Since then it has been :
2014/2015 £1.8m 2015/2016 £2.2m 2016/2017 £2.8m
In the coming season, we have budgeted a 15% increase in the playing budget but I suspect the actual increase will be in excess of 20%.
Alongside this, we spent over £1m on transfer fees in the summer of 2016. Pep has the opportunity to bring more players in who require transfer fees. These fees are on top of the playing budget.
The club will be profitable for the year ending 30 June 2017 and is fully funded for the foreseeable future, even after taking account of a 20% increase in the playing budget.

It did leave me wondering why we have such division in the fan base, as when you look at the numbers and the success over the last few years it really is staggering that some people are so upset. For the record i am not talking about people asking questions, as that is fair enough. It is the name calling and animosity that some display towards the owner that surprises me (OxfordMitch put it better than i have a few posts ago)

F*cking hell!!) and then still people giving you a bunch of crap about every move you do or don't make. We need to get behind the club now.

The playing budget is simply the wages of the playing staff. If that is going up to £3.6 million then we should be expecting another 4 to 5 major signings in the next few weeks. Exciting times!
