Over the last two and a half years, the club has managed to attract higher calibre players than we perhaps merit.
How? We've been playing attractive football, not your typical lower league clodhoppers. So a Premier League team is willing to loan out a fringe young player to gain experience in a decent team. eg Jonjoe Kenny, Toni Martinez.
Not only have we actually given these players decent game time, many clubs say they've come back improved. Doesn't always work eg Crowley.
The other attraction is the shop window effect. Roofe had a decent loan spell and could have returned to WBA reserves or languished on the bench at Fulham. Instead he took a three league drop and had a great season in L2 earning himself a transfer to Leeds. Assuming Lundstram does move to Sheffield United, it could be said he's achieved the same with a good two year spell, after being sent out on several loans whilst at Everton.
So this model works for Oxford United in two ways:- 1 - getting high quality loanees 2 - making the turn on player transfers and sell ons.
Going forward though, will this still work? Pep Clotet is pretty unknown and we don't really know what his style of football will be. Will we be able to get the decent loans in, will they get good game time? How much of this was because of Appleton, how much Fazakerly, Chris Allen, scouting, and the rest of the backroom team? Whilst we are told of a competitive budget, will we attract players if in reality our side will have to outperform to be play-off competitive? If we do start losing this edge, does the whole idea of making money from player transfers drop away if we can't get them to play at a lower level shop window in the first place?

I also have these questions, and without ruining a good debate: All we can do is wait and see

It's a business model for a football club that should be relatively straight forward to replicate with different people , for instance Peterborough have had their model of finding lower league diamonds for years, Crewe had their famous youth academy.
What worries me or perhaps encourages me is that we seem to be putting off senior appointments and decisions , whether as a financial reason, or perhaps it's to leave these decisions to the next owner if any takeover is in the offing.

Apples was very much the kingpin of our punching above our weight success (in the short if not long term) - he leaves a very big pair of shoes for any replacement to fill.
Let's hope Pep's as inspired an appointment and gets the backing to maintain our rise.

Either way, I feel Pep should be given the entire season. We admirably stuck by Appleton and the same should be done for Pep if we don't start well.

I suspect Pep is one of those people that is well known and respected in the game, but the rest of the world doesn't know too much about him. Of course, lets not underestimate the role Fazza plays in player recruitment

Look, I'm hearing some pretty mental stuff on the internet just now.
We are going through our latest transition as a club. Another group of assets who we got emotionally attached to and who we trusted are being broken up, and we are moving on...again. Whether it be Lunny, Maguire, Dunks, Roofe, Cod etc. Our assets serve our long term interest...not the interests of Leeds Utd, Sheffield Utd, Bristol City etc, but OXFORD UNITED.
Everyone is surely aware of our model. Our equalizing tactic is to gain early intelligence on talent, pay a fee, develop, and sell on to a club who are higher up the pyramid at the moment. That particular club could find itself on the receiving end of OUFC in a year or two.
The new, gaffer isn't this young spanish unknown who is a hopeless downgrade on Mapp. He may take a while to find his feet but he is VERY well known within the game. There is much time before the transfer window shuts. A few of us could end up looking pretty stupid in a few weeks.

Eales needs to fill the gaping holes, especially up front, with players where fees are paid to bring in quality and quickly, before the first game in the season.

I see Pep as someone who can carry on with the plan the club has in place, which is essentially, buy them cheap, develop them and sell them on for a big profit in a year or two. You could argue that Pep's credibility is higher when he arrived than when Appleton did and I've no doubt he has the contacts to carry this on.

The model is ok to an extent but as Mapp eluded too others are also seeing it as a way forward hence he spoke about scandinavia. It can backfire very easily though as it's not easy to continue finding these gems and less so when others are looking in the same area.
I guess i am old school but i hate all the talk of loans being the answer and actually dislike the whole loan system.
