Quite looking forward to this one tonight.
This is a pretty exciting Ajax side who I thought would struggle to get past a decent Lyon. Surely United should have too much quality for them though.
2-1 United for me

2-0 man united. Ajax are a great young side but I think man united will have too much for them.

I've got 3-1 Man U with Rashford anytime, unfortunately I can't see Ajax scoring.

So if I understand this right Man U who finished 6th,(sixth) will be playing in the Champions League. Can we not just call it what it is European League 1 and European League 2 with promotion for the winners. Though I love football there are times when that love is strained to breaking point.

Strictly speaking not all the clubs that enter are European, it's also not a league unless the checkatrade is one.

Agree it means that clubs in the latter stages when the rubbish has been eliminated take it more seriously, but I have a problem with the name.

True but that was the case in the days of Euopean Cup, Cup winners cup and Fairs cup. The checkatrade was a cup knockout format until the lunatics messed around with it. Point I was trying to make was that finishing 15th in your league after finishing 4th the year before could see you in the "Champions League", by winning the Europa League.

That makes it a very good first season for mourinho. Fair play to him.

Ajax were very disappointing. The occasion seemed to get to them and they never really got going. Fair play to Man Utd, they controlled the game.

To me this one seemed to lose the magic of a final. It felt much more of a means to an end. Maybe it was just the poor atmosphere in the pub I watched it in

Bit late, but well done Man U and the special one. If they'd of lost, he would have been ridiculed, as a failure.

What's the saying... Form is temporary, class is permanent.. Coming sixth in a six team league is class? Sacked off the league months back to concentrate on the EL and direct qualification into the CL. Finished the season. With 3 trophies. More investment in the summer with top players linked. I'd say things are looking good for the red half of Manchester.

Agree, he realised there was no chance of the CL through the league, no one one likes a smart arse but I think mourinho got it right, class maybe not, planning yes he got it right

What's the saying... Form is temporary, class is permanent.. Mmm. They did pretty well but if somebody had said at the start of the season that they would come 24 points behind the Champions I am not sure that many Man U fans would have pointed towards class. Jose to be fair is exceptional at one off important games. Out of interest would you say that man U have been entertaining? Would you have been happy with the league performance if you were offered this at the start of the season?

Man Utd is a huge job, not just the size and expectation but in what's required to bring them up to standard. To many average players and players who've peaked and are on big money, Rooney for example.
Whilst 24 points sounds a lot, if they would have turned a few home draws into wins and with Jose not sacking the league off you'd have had a different outcome in the league I'm sure.
They need 4/5 top players to compete at the top of the PL and CL.
A centre half, a left back, a creative central midfielder a wide player and a cf.
If Jose nails those positions I'd expect Man Utd to be challenging next season.

What's the saying... Form is temporary, class is permanent.. A phrase coined by Liverpool fans when their dominance started waning. As a lover of all things scouse,im sure thats where you picked it up from.

And if Oxford had scored just 1 extra goal in every home game last season,we would be looking at the championship next season. If Liverpool(unbeaten against the top 8) had performed the same against the bottom teams they would have won the league at a canter. They didn't, so IF is irrelevant. The only Man United player who would/might get in the Chelsea side is Madrid bound De Gea. "I'd expect Man Utd to be challenging next season" So do i,unlike this season,i expect them to be challenging for the top four.

Although I have disliked Man U for years, they were still entertaining to watch under Fergie and I would watch them. However, under the management since they are dull and boring. I now turn off the games, as I did the final, rather than watch the drivel that is on show.
They may have had a successful season trophy wise, but the product they are serving up is not a success.

They also turned in the worst long unbeaten run ever, with as many draws as wins, and managed to fall from 7 points to 17 points behind the leaders during the 24 game run.
