Why is there an empty space of a couple of rows at the back of the East Stand? Could it be used as an area for standing? It would probably take a hundred or two? Apologies if this has been discussed before.

Apologies if this has been discussed before. Have you been a asleep since 2000? In case you have then you may want to know that since then we have: won the premier league and champions league (beating Grimsby Town in the final at the nou camp) Employed and sacked Jose as he couldn't provide the entertaining football our fan base deman The club got bought by Timmy Mallet but in turn we went bust and have had to climb the leagues again but it seems we are back in a reasonable position on and off the pitch. Mallet is still allowed to come to games but only after signing a disclaimer that he would never do half time entertainment again. I'm sure others will fill you in if I've missed anything off.

The void area at the back of the East stand is commonly known as the 'Nick Merry' - in other words, a waste of space. Numerous ideas have been touted for use of, but with talks regarding the Grenoble road stadium, surrounding area and CPF ongoing it's not currently on anyone's agenda. That won't stop anyone revisiting a discussion on this, obviously.

Thanks. Today's Oxford Mail article on safe standing just reminded me of the potential for that space. It could have been minor compensation for missing out on the temporary fourth stand.
And by the way, I haven't been asleep since 2000, just living 4000 miles away.

To be fair I have had a season ticket in the east stand for 15 years, done a bit of contracting up there and used the ozone complex for various things and only noticed it at the beginning of this season, so 4,000 miles away seems a fair excuse.
I think we should build a smart casino like at Coventry in that space.

Description of top of East Stand (from the original stadium brochure):
“This will also house a new concept in executive lounges. Known on the continent as 'business seats', this is a behind glass facility with a capacity of 580. Guests will be able to have a pre-match meal overlooking the pitch, a drink from the private bar and then take their places in the comfort of theatre-style seating raked four deep. On the first floor there are extensive bars and function rooms. The Club plans to hold over 100 non-football events every year ensuring that it is the social heart of the community”
Wouldn't it have been nice if it had happened!

Yeah a supporters bar, with view of the stadium, who would want that- horrendous

On the subject of safe standing though. Its great news to hear the club pushing for at least a debate about it. Lets hope that something changes and we should have the fortune to be able to add something to our current home.

I think there is room for all kinds of supporters at the ground. Would still like a supporters bar like they had at Rushden.

The development of this area has already been looked at, and will be one of the first things to happen in the community stadium development. It would not necessarily be as per the original plan as outlined in grover's post, but does have some of the same features. No seats would be behind glass though.
