a player called lionel messi, not sure if you have heard of him has the record for the most missed penalties in La Liga. I think Barca should drop him...
In seriousness Taylor should be dropped for our penalty shootout shenanigans.

Thanks. Actually found out just as you replied. At least its the normal knockout phase now and there aren't too many pseudo sides in the way. I bet we get one of them anyway!!!!!!!

Honestly, I only went because some of my Chelsea friends got me a ticket, so I had to sit among home fans who spend more time looking at their phones than at the football. One of them said to me that Oxford's reserves looked pretty crap. I was too embarrassed to tell him that, apart from Dunkley and maybe Macdonald and Ledson, that's as good as it gets.
The highlight had to be at the final whistle when most of the home fans got up and left, unaware it was going to penalties. Even the admin must have been unsure. It was a good ten minutes or more after the final whistle before they announced on the tannoy there would be penalties!

Trying to remember the last time I saw an Oxford player (or, in this case, players) miss two penalties in a match. I think it was Hugh Curran against Hereford when they had Peter Mellor in goal?

To be fair to Chelsea fans, why did anyone stay to watch a penalty shootout that had absolutely no bearing on anything, surely the most pointless one in the history of football?

Wow Wes Thomas and lunny miss both pens they had. Awful. But the first Thomas penalty took poor to a new level. He actually managed to shank it over the bar, is he really a professional footballer or does he just turn up when somebody looks after his calves. It was truly the most unreal moment in a very unreal night. By eleven all, it was just please somebody miss and the other team score so we can go home. We are already through lets go home. Three pointless games to get to the exact stage we got last year with only one pointless game. Next round we will be away to one of the other seven southern group winners. Another strange thing is Cheltenham is in the Northern section whilst Coventry, West Brom, Norwich are in the South. Geography is obviously not a strong point in the EFL, which starts to explain of the some godforsaken away games on a Tuesday night. The poor deluded idiots at the EFL obviously think Carlisle v Cheltenham is a local derby and cannot understand the criticism of why that fixture on Tuesday 16th August was a problem for supporters.

I remember that! Curran missed from the spot twice and promptly burst out laughing. Was around Feb.'78 but not sure if Mellor was in goal. He certainly played for Hereford in the game at Edgar St.in Oct '77. Curran and Foley missed quite a few penalties.

I wouldn't take a lot of notice of opposing fans views on 'my' team, especially when they ''spend more time looking at their phones than at the football.'' Neither would I read too much into individual or collective performances in such a game. I can't see the point of comparison's between OUFC and a Premiership team -even between mates, personally I have acquaintances who say they support a particular Premiership Club, I don't feel the least shame in saying who I support, in fact the opposite. Always have, 'your' team is your team.

For the record there are 15 other qualifiers from the southern groups who we can be drawn against: Millwall, Luton, Southend, Brighton U21, Norwich U21, MK Dons, Crawley Town, Southampton U21, Wycombe, Coventry, Swindon, Wimbledon, Swansea U21, Yeovil and Reading U21. I wonder if they prevent teams from the same group meeting in this round such as us and Swindon?

Meaningless, maybe, but I think most left because they didn't realise penalties were coming. I would love to have seen some of their faces when they picked up the newspaper the following morning and discovered they had missed twenty-five goals and a piece of history being created.
