Keepers: Neil Cutler, Andre Arendse, Mike Salmon, David Brown, Andrea Guatelli. Defenders: Lee Jarman, David Grant, Andy Kingston, Arthur Gnohere, Alex Jeannin, Ian McGuckin, Brian Wilsterman, Phil Whelan, Steve Wood, David Woozley. Midfielders: Gordon Hodgson, Peter Fear, Malcolm Page, Emiliano Diaz, Martin Thomas, Courtney Pitt, Jon Narbett, Liam Horsted, Francis Green, Keiron St Aimee, Derek Townsley. Strikers: Steve Anthrobus, Marvin Robinson, Kristaps Grebis, John Grant, Ray Gaston, Adrian O'Dowd, Armand Gnanduillet, Andy Campbell, Gary Twigg, Tim Sills. Gordon Hodson ? Great bloke used to get in the Bell at Grove on a Sunday Lunchtime, drink 10 pints and smoke 10 "tabs" Sadly died aged 46. I'll go for mobility, Paul Kee in goal Ben Futcher and Phil Whelan at the back. Peter Fear in midfield, 3 up top,Trevor Aylott,Julian Alsop and Billy Whitehurst, Those 3 would scare the living daylights out of any centre back. Rage's view on my picks. " A big deal was made of Peter Stanley Fear`s Premiership credentials after he was signed from Wimbledon, but unfortunately the Sutton-born peroxide blond failed to live up to them. Too often he was a liability rather than an asset, and it was no surprise that his career plummeted after leaving United. Fear didn`t flatter to deceive, because he failed to flatter at all" "Paul Victor Kee, born Belfast. Butter-fingered goalkeeper, who nevertheless earned himself hero status for his part in United`s final game of the 1991/92 season, at Tranmere Rovers. United had to win to have any chance of avoiding relegation, and they did, thanks in large part to some superb goalkeeping from Kee. He did nothing else of note during his entire Oxford career" "Philip James Whelan, born Reddish. Towering central defender, signed from Middlesbrough. Rare in that he held a degree, in accountancy. Common in that he had no pace" "Big Trevor Keith Charles Aylott was signed from Birmingham City in 1991. Although he was only at the Manor for one season he made a big impact with his headband and his famous two-handed Aylott wave. He scored six goals in his 40 games, and was generally regarded as relatively immobile" "Big Jules joined Oxford in the Summer of 2003, having been Cheltenham's leading scorer the previous two seasons After injury, though, Alsop slowed down considerably, and when Ian Atkins left and Graham Rix tried to get the side to play more passing football Alsop found himself getting marginalised. He was sacked by United after an incident involving some youth team players and a banana" And the best of the lot, "William Whitehurst, born Thurnscoe. Billy the Whale was one of those rare players, who became popular with the crowd despite, or possibly because of, being crap. Billy was possibly the hardest forward to have played for the club, what he lacked in talent he made up for in sheer brawn" Paul Kee gets in the team for dropping a cross at Steve Whites feet for a tap in against the scum. Trevor Aylott gets in for missing the STRATTON BANK with a penalty at the skip. There have been far worse players than Trevor Aylott play for us. Another such player would be Ricky Sappleton. This bit is not a reply to your post but another one, Lee Jarman and Ian McGuckin made Brian Wilsterman look like Beckenbauer.

Narbett and StAimee were simply awful. I'd forgotten about them. Salmon will always be remembered for his debut against Birmingham. Almost single handlely presenting seven goals to the opposition.

This topic is a hardy annual, and I've made this point before - there is a great difference between a rubbish loan player, and a disaster of a marquee signing. Yes, Ricky Sappleton and Ben Futcher were awful (and Futcher should not have got a second game!) but the impact on the club was marginal long-term. However, signing someone like Billy Whitehust or David Leaworthy had a significant effect on us for quite a while.
Generally, eighteen93's list is excellent. Andy Kingston would not last 45 minutes with modern refereeing - and quite rightly. Malcolm Page I do remember being especially slow and clueless. Marvin Robinson....
One or two unfair mentions from some posters - Phil Trainer (always worked hard, not the worst vision), Matt Day (OK until he put on the pounds) and Eric Sabin (I remember a very good game for us at Darlington).

Phil Trainer only survived one training session under Lord Wilder before being banished, he was never a pro footballer in a million years so he gets my vote.

Simon And Ross Weatherstone end of, next move on Simon I think it was, got grief form a fan at Weymouth away, as the fan offered to call him a taxi to get home. He began to offer the fan out during the game. Thought far too much of themselves.

Andy Harris maybe? Signed on loan from Brum in 1991 and was subbed at half time in his first game. Didn't play for us again.

Martin Thomas? He was signed in the summer of 2001 and was made captain by Mark Wright I think? When we first moved to Grenoble Road

Ross Weatherstone made his debut in that Reading game but never scored.
Rob Folland got the first and a Matt Murphy stunner won it for us.

As soon as I typed the thing about Ross Weatherstone scoring I had a nagging doubt I'd gor it wrong. Was a nice goal from fFolland too if I remember. I wonder what happened to him?

Can't believe nobody has said Mark Rawle - total waste of space! Can't have Mark Rawle in there! Those goals against Kidderminster and Cambridge alone give him a get out of jail card for this thread. He was injury prone, granted. As others have said, there's a difference between being outright useless and a tragic disappointment. I'd throw in Deane Smalley in that last category. Worst ever? No. a terrible waste of transfer fee and wages? Absolutely. Dave Kitson could well qualify for worst transfer we had as well. Excellent player but a knob and an expensive one at that too.

Good shout with Kitson. Huge wage and never repaid a fraction of it on the pitch. When he gave away the penalty against Plymouth on Boxing Day just gave me the impression he had plans over new year and wanted some time off. Then, to leave the way he did by retiring and us having to pay him off.....Cock!!!!

Marvellous Marvin for me. Awful. Closely followed by Neville Roach.
Though the summer Rix blew his budget on Mooney and Bradbury he brought in some absolute chod when he remembered he needed a team. Terry Parker, Dave Woozley. Shudder.
We've come a LONG way.
