I'm going to this one. While I'd like a win of course, what I would like more is for Appleton to play a strong side - preferably the one that he sees being the mainstay of the season (as far as injuries allow). I felt we were a bit disjointed in midfield on Saturday, and (given the amount we paid for him) you would have to think that Hemmings is going to feature heavily. So hopefully some time on the training ground will have helped with the link up play and will have given enough Hemmings enough idea what his team mates are likely to do for him to start tonight.

Since getting back into the football league, our form in the first round of the league cup has been rather good: four wins out of six, all against teams in leagues higher than our own. Interestingly, all those four wins were against teams starting with the letter B: Bristol Rovers, Bournemouth, Bristol City, Brentford. Could Birmingham be next? The losses were both against teams starting with C: Cardiff, Charlton. All four times we made it to round two we were drawn away from home and lost: West Ham, Leeds, West Brom, Sheffield Wednesday. Including tonight's tie, nine out of eleven of our post-2010 league cup games have been away from home.

Can't get away from work early enough to go to most mid-week away games, so I'll be listening in with an Ice cold cider. Good Luck to all those travelling. 1-3 to the mighty yellows. Thomas x2 and Maguire scoring the goals.

Following this one from rainy and windy Norway (frustrated I can't go as I only live in Rugby) not expecting anything like Brentford last season, but a good result will help team morale.

Listening to this one in Menorca... Met a family from Biecester out here who flew back yesterday who are going to St Andrews this evening, hope they had a safe journey... A tough game tonight and we will be lightweight in a few positions. I think our EFL cup may be over come 9.30pm... Birmingham City - 3 Oxford United - 1 Att 9768 (1156 yellows)

Not sure how to call this. Certainly wont be an easy game. Think it will be a much harder game than v WBA and Swansea.
Going 2-1 Blues

Five of us in the car on the way now.
Predictions range from a 4-0 defeat to a 2-1 win.
I just hope we give a good account of ourselves, score at least one, and no one else gets injured. Do have a sneaky feeling we might cause yet another upset of sorts, though.
Would like to see Hemmings start. Maybe Roberts (the new one) for Macca or Maguire too.
COYY!

Reckon it depends a little on how seriously Birmingham take the competition.
They've got some good players and a competent manager as well, I would expect them to be an upper mid-table Championship side again this year. So a little better than us if they send out their strongest team.
But if they don't, and we do, we'll batter them like we did Brentford last season.

Martin straight in for Dunkley is the only change to the squad from Saturday.

With Martin in, my worries are lessened somewhat. Having a patched up defence was my main concern.
It's a bit of a free hit tonight. No shame in losing and all the plaudits should we muddle our way through. Hope we give a good account of ourselves.

Brum 2 Oxford 2 (Skarz and MacDonald) Oxford to win 4-3 on pens. Att: 10,908. No dogs, no bookings, no sending offs. Skarz will be caught reading a dirty magazine before the match and will give a new meaning to putting up 'stiff resistence'. Eastwood will get carried away about being our new goalie and tell someone to 'Make my day!' He will be replaced at half-time, for showing off and dong a bad Clint Eastwood impression. That's all I've got for this one.

A very strong team put out by Mapp showing we're taking this seriously but also we need to get some game time in for the more important league matches. Very difficult to predict the outcome, the performance and hopefully keeping clear of more injuries is paramount though, depends on how brum go about things -presumably they'll be on the front foot from the off so we'll maybe see if the current team will be as efficient counter attacking as was last season's team.
Brum 2 Yellows 3. I sincerely hope so.

I swear Nick Harris has just referred to Curtis Nelson as Wes Morgan twice. C'mon BBC Oxford, I know he's been doing the commentary for a while but perhaps it's time to retire him gracefully?
