This isn't a thread to say - we need new songs. We have enough of those threads.
More, can we be more selective and sing a fewer number of songs over a longer period so they get more well known. Just feel like we have a load of player songs and loads of 'new' team songs where the words are not exactly clear and as such, people don't join in....or they are not repetitive chants that last more than one chorus.
I thought Northampton fans were excellent tonight (said through gritted teeth) - though it is always easier away.
At Wembley, we will have about 300-500 people singing some of our core song book that will not be heard, 10,000 people singing Kemar Roofe is magic and 30,000 just chanting yellows/ COYY as they are the easy songs to sing.
Not trying to have a dig, (though I appreciate it may be seen as one) - I just want our vocal to be raised a notched at home and at Wembley - and feel like we have hit some great heights in some games and fallen very flat in others.

I thought we were pretty loud last night, there was 1 song I didn't recognise though towards the end

Personally I thought Northampton were loud for about 5 minutes out of the first 80. Then obviously we're loud for the remaining 10. Pretty poor if you ask me considering they were away and in numbers. Anyway with 10,000 singing Kamar Roofe is manic it'll soon spread to the rest. So I wouldn't worry even if they are singing the wrong words (as I'm sure a few of us did at the beginning)

I've thought this at times this season too. When there's been big crowds the new songs just don't have any momentum as many (most?) don't know them. Then you'll hear an old classic and many get behind it.
Sat in the north stand on tues Northampton sounded quite loud at times, it was notable how the most basic songs are the ones that gained traction (shoe army, we are going up as champions and EI EI EI OI. Conversely they tried a song for Holmes that you couldn't make out.

I thought they were fairly loud on Tuesday...without being constant....and to say we were in fine voice is not true. There were a few moments but I wouldn't exactly say we were rocking. Was very surprised that Que Sara didn't take off in the first half as they were singing about being top of the league, It did start but muted out.
I actually think there are now a huge amount of songs and we kind of have a repertoire that is launched through every game - and just thought that perhaps you could identify 4 or 5 of the most popular (and by that, I mean anthemic)....and then really try and get them going in the coming weeks (I.e. repeat them a lot either at the time or later again in the match).
Or maybe - just chuck in a few of the older classics (You are my sunshine and loop it through twice).....as at Wembley, by the time the song gets around the ground, it will be finished if we do one verse and chorus.....the songs that create big noise there are ones that are repeatable which echo round and everyone can launch into. Left side/ Right side at Wembley could be fun!
By the way - it isn't easy.....I appreciate that....just a thought I had when I came home from the game on Tuesday.

Can't agree with much on this thread. One of the best things about our fanbase is the wide range of songs we have. Not including player songs we have about 20 that support the team. I can't understand anyone wanting to change to a Pompey style "2/3 song club". It's awful!
And asking why we didn't sing Que Sara Sara? It was a massive league game, we needed the lads to get a result so thankfully the majority of the stand were trying to get behind them, instead of pointlessy singing about 1 game in April! I'm quite glad it was drowned out by more supportive songs rather quickly.
Northampton were obviously buoyant towards the end but thought they were extremely poor throughout considering the numbers. We've had much louder here this season. Although the "away fans noise" debate will always be a pointless one due to the acoustics of the ground. Those in the East Stand can't hear them and vice versa, whereas those in the South and North Stands will hear them loud and clear, far more than they could hear the East Stand.
If you come regularly enough it's easy to learn the songs, if you come every so often than obviously you'll only know a select few classics. That's just how it is! "Kemar Roofe is magic" was brand new this season and loads "didn't know the lyrics", but got going brilliantly in the pub away at Orient and voila, everyone suddenly knows them now. You've got to let these things happen naturally :-)

PS...
Can we PLEASE forget about Wembley?! We have 10 MASSIVE league games before then that will define our season. Promotion is the aim, lets not focus all our thoughts on a nice day out mid-season.

We will always have 5 or 6 songs that will remain with the club whatever.....COYY, Forever and ever, By far the greatest team, Yellows, Love you Oxford, We hate Swindon, Swindon Town falling down.....they have been here for 3 decades and will continue to be so. The Roofe song is great and fair play it took off. Kind of making more point for me. 20 songs....of which half, either people don't know - or maybe, just don't like....as those songs are not being heard. This doesn't have to be a Wembley thing......I think at home games, the same advice could be said. Took my dad on Tuesday so went to the SSU and a number of songs are just a low/ murmour....and, appreciate , the acoustics aren't great, but its not just this, as when other songs are launched into, they sound pretty loud.....for example, Sunday league, referee was the loudest chant of the night.... (and what a cnut he was). Anyway, just a view - I certainly not trying to dissuade an atmosphere and appreciate all those that try and create it. As you mentioned, plenty of big games to get an atmosphere going, starting Saturday....

So... What are the words for: New Jake Wright song Joe Skarz Sercombe Lundstrum And any other team song that is new!

Most people find it hard and embarrassing to get involved with the singing at games simply because they don't know all the words, me included. Could someone post up the words to say the most popular dozen songs, maybe do printed hand outs before games for anyone interested. It would be great for more people to know the words and get involved to crank up the volume, especially at home when at times it can go flat.

Anyway, just a view - I certainly not trying to dissuade an atmosphere and appreciate all those that try and create it. As you mentioned, plenty of big games to get an atmosphere going, starting Saturday.... Thats what happens when EVERYONE joins in. It's loud enough to echo off the high roof and project outwards. Everyone was p*ssed off at the ref so the entire stood and sang at once. Why oh why can't we all do that for the supportive songs. Even the ones you mentioned, where every single fan knows the lyrics... people still sit there in silence! Even the simple "Stand up if you love Oxford", about a quarter of the stand actually stand up... you don't even need to know the lyrics! The only reason you'd sit in the East Stand (apart from the price) is for the atmosphere, surely. A lot of fans don't realise what a massive difference they can make without even singing. Clapping along to every song, bringing a scarf and holding it up, twirling it round etc, bringing back that flag sitting in your wardrobe... just standing up to be honest. All makes a huge difference. The lads at the back go for it hammer and tongs for 90 minutes, the majority of songs they start are classics that everyone knows the lyrics to. To drastically improve the atmosphere we need everyone, from the front row to the back, joining in with them in one way or another

A few iconic songs that I feel many people don't know the words to:
-We are the Oxford boys, stood on the London road. You know it's true yellow and blue, woah woah ehhh ohh ehhh ohhh.
-Hello! Hello! we are the Oxford boys, Hello! Hello! we are the Oxford boys. And if you are a Swindon fan surrender or you die. We all follow United!
-Yellow and Blue keep your shape, Yelllow and Blue jockey it in, Yelloq and Blue down the line, Yellow and Blue in the mix nanananaa U's! nanananaa U's! nanananaa U's! nanananaa U's!
-So hoist up the yellow flag, can't here (team name) sing, come on you Oxford boys we'll sing on our own. I wanna go home I wanna go hoooome! (team place)s a shithole I wanna go home! (alternatively I'm glad we're at home)
-Build a bonfire, build a bonfire. Put the Swindon on the top, put the Reading in the middle and burn the f*cking lot!
-Appleton had a dream, to build a football team. Eales' gave money to sign the players we need. We played from the back, with Dan in attack! Oxford United, we're on our way back!

Hope I never hear 'Build a bonfire' at football again, most embarrassing song ever, We used to sing it at school around 1970, with the words 'teachers' and 'prefects' instead of Swindon and Reading. I didn't even know what a prefect was at this stage as we were still at primary school

We Are the Oxford BoysWe are the Oxford boys, stood on the London Road, and you know it's true, Yellow and Blue. Woah Oh Oh Ohhhhh Woah OH OH OOOOHHH WAY HEY HEY OHHHHH WAY HEY HEY OH repeat. Skip to 15.20 on this video for an example of the speed it should be sung at. I get very angry when we sing it at mach 10 speed, the ending needs to be especially drawn out notes. Big lungs required. While still on that video, another song we'd like to get going starts at around 7.10 Laaaa, LA LA LA LA LAAAA, LA LA LA LA LAAAAAAA, LA LA LAAA, WE'RE OXFOOOORD, U-NITE-ED repeat endlessly, rotating between LA's and OOH's I Know That I support The OxfordI know that I support the Oxford, they are the only team for me, I know that I support the Oxford, they are the greatest team I've seen. We are the London Road, We are the London Road, We areeee the famous London Road You know that I will not forget you, You are the Only team for me, You know that I will not forget you, You are the greatest team I've seen, We are the London Road, We are the London Road, We areee the famous London road. repeat. Appleton Had a dream/Hoist Up The Yellow FlagI think it would work really well if we merged these two songs, it could go on for ages if we rotated between each verse. Hoist up the Yellow flag, Can't hear the ( ) Sing, Come on the Oxford Boys, We'll sing on our own, don't wanna go home, dont wanna go hooome, this is the best trip, I've ever been on, Duh duh duh, duh duh duh, duh duh duh, So Appleton had a dream, to build our football team. Eales has money to sign the players we need, We play from the back, With Dan in Attack, We're Oxford United, we're on our way back. Obviously to the tune of Sloop John B, we all must know that one by now! Please can we stop singing, bla bla's a shit hole, etc. Don't f*ck with Skarz Don't f*ck with Skark, Super Joey Skarz, I just don't think you understand, You'll never get past Skarz, Super Joey Skarz, Cause he's the best defender in the land! I think we'd need to slow it down a tad compared to the Cardiff fans in that video. Ooooh Johnny MullinsOoooh Johnny Mullins, Our defender, our centre back, he's only 5'11 and his sisters f*cking fine, but none of that matters when he clears it off the line, Oooooh johnny Mullins Our defender... etc.

Tradition and club songs have to start somewhere, some are born and forgotten, some are born and adopted forever, whether by accident or a hit record..... Here are some examples - Leeds Utd - Marching on together, was a hit that made top of the pops with the players singing it in the 1970's for the teams FA Cup appearances, imagine the current Leeds fans at the time cringing with their scarfs tied around their wrists only to have the terrace chant the anthem of all anthems 40 odd years later...(except Liverpool FC) Stoke City - rumour has it that the "Deliah" song by Tom Jones was heard on a juke box in a pub at a Stoke City away game, the fans then continued to sing it Karioke style during the game and the rest is history and became their anthem. Spurs - Ossie, Rickie Villa and chas and Dave took this FA Cup song into the top ten of the hit parade, it is sung every time Spurs plan an FA Cup game.. Man City - Blue moon, I saw you standing alone is a unique song to City even though many teams adopt a blue kit, this is another song that is fairly recent with the blue half of Manchester similar to the Stoke City scenario.... Liverpool - say no more, A Gerry and the pacemakers classic adopted in the 60's and known worldwide as the song of Liverpool FC.. Newcastle - The bladen races.. Norwich City - On the ball city, never mind the danger...... Etc, etc.. Coventry City - play up Sky Blues, while we are are singing, we will never lose..... Etc, etc... Burnley - Nay no never, nay no never no more, till we play the Bas^#%}?*% Rovers, nay never no more.. Southampton - Oh when the saints, go marching in...... Chelsea - Flying high, up in the sky, we'll keep the blue flag flying high, from Stamford bridge to Wembley, we'll keep the blue flag flying high... Birmingham City - keep righ on to the end of the road..... Swansea - Land of my fathers seems to be another recent anthem... . It is time we came up with one that we can adopt as our own and sing for decades to come..........!
