Heard the sad news that one of my old pals who I went to my first home and away games with oxford back in the 70's died suddenly at his home on June 1st in Berinsfield age 52.
Back in the day he/we was Oxford United through-and-through, and being a bit older encouraged me to hop on the Number 5 bus into Oxford, then either wait around at The Plain for a bus or make the
hike up the hill - before long we got braver- first away coach we went on was Mick Brown's to Southampton as a 13 year old "under five"!.. - match postponed due to being waterlogged- and we ended up going into the Town End about 20 minutes for swindon v walsall.... *laughs*... For a few years we didnt miss any/many matches-- had numerous scrapes and scraps...pompey away for the 2 nil ( micky tait double, as I recall) in 1975..we somehow got out of fratton park in one piece...hazy & crazy days... he was one of the few black lads to follow us around at that time, so he was always easy to spot , the smile gave him away every time.
Anyone who was part of that group at the time will have known him, I've lost touch having moved away however I saw him a couple of years ago at the ( Old) New Inn for a drink and he was his lively self, but I could tell something wasnt quite right..anyways, turns out he died of an undiagnosed illness suddenly last week.
RIP to a proper Oxford lad and one who made supporting Oxford United a life-long curse and a true long-term pal- Funeral is 2 pm at Berinsfield Cemetary.
Cheers
