What an awful decision that was. Submarine commanders would be impressed with that dive.

I think after their own team, most were hoping for a Brazil win if just for football to be the winner (sorry for the cliche!) and to see some smiles on the Brazilians faces.
Not anymore. That was a shocker.

Cheating bas*ards ref is a wan*er but probably ben told by uncle Sepp to make sure Brazil win, Neymar should have been sent off and the penalty that shouldn't have been, I suppose this was to be expected

What an extraordinarily weak referee. These are supposed to be the best in the World?
Terrible decision for the penalty.

It's quite a sour start to the tournament for me. The Ref bottled the major decisions that affected Brazil. Rather than officiate the game, he officiated the occasion.

Referee bottling the big occasion + crap Croatian goalkeeper = Lucky Brazil.
Still, probably for the best. If Brazil went out in the groups, the country would probably explode.
They certainly didn't look like tournament winners tonight though. We'll see if there's a great side out there in the next few days, but there certainly wasn't tonight (other than Oscar - who was excellent).

Usual crap standard of refereeing at the World Cup.
Should use refs from top European leagues for such high profile games.
Then again, unlikely that European refs could be "paid off" by Blatter.

At least we won't have that to worry about on Saturday. England-Italy is being refereed by Bjorn Kuipers, who was last seen doing the Champions League Final.......

To me it looked like he was trying to lean into Lovren so he could turn him and shoot, but Lovren just stepped back so he stacked it

With Sepp Blatter in overall charge I can see the FIFA world cup finals going the same way as the Eurovision song contest!!! Rigged
shockingly bad ref/ officials, they were below the low standard required for conference football
As for the cheating host nations team...at least 2 red cards were warranted but not issued...Neymar for THAT elbow and Fred for diving
thing is the Brazillian's can do what ever they want and get away with it with Uncle Sepp making sure theres no punishment given
...sadly after ONE game the tournament looks corrupt and already fixed so the host nation WIN ... its wrong, wrong, wrong Blatter!

At least England - Italy has a decent ref.
The ref yesterday was way off. In my eyes the elbow shouls have been a red, Fred should have been a yellow and the Croatian goal should not have been disallowed. Result 2-2, Croatie deserved a point for the effort and solid defending.

Result 2-2, Croatie deserved a point for the effort and solid defending. We'll see about the ref against Italy. Your comments are remarkably restrained about the 'performance' last night. I recall your memories to the Japan/South Korea finals where Spain lost to South Korea in a very suspiciously-refereed match and iirc Italy also enjoyed the sort of inexplicable (from a footy p.o.v.) disfavour that buggered Croatia last evening. I suggest that Brasil has continuously received pretty favourable refereeing ever since Pele was 'kicked out' of the '66 world cup, they whine like no other nation (except Liverpool, which is more a tragic mutation or subhuman species) when they lose. I'll also suggest that Brasil & Argentina have played a very similar style (Uruguay and Chile, when Chile are good, are no less skilled but historically play on the break) of football and hard-assed defensive approach for the last 20 years and only one of them is regarded in the UK media as a cynical bunch of cu nts. Brasil gets a ridiculously positive press, in other words. No?

I'm a little surprised that, well, everybody else is surprised at the Brazil favouring that went on yesterday.
The host nation getting preferred refereeing status is a longstanding World Cup tradition! South Africa had it last time (but were too rubbish to take advantage). South Korea had it in a big way in 2002. '66 wasn't exactly devoid of controversial refereeing decisions that favoured the host nation!!
It's one of the reasons - along with familiarity to the conditions, and rabid fan support - why Brazil were favoured by so many going into the tournament.
However, having seen them in action last night.....I'm not sure it's going to be enough to win them the World Cup. They are actually quite a limited side and against the very best, I reckon they'll struggle. Thiago Silva is great, Neymar is influential (although I didn't think his allround play was fantastic last night.....he gave the ball away a lot), Oscar has bags of potential. But the two fullbacks are defensively suspect, and there's a lot of journeymen (at international level) filling out the side.

Utter rubbish in this thread as usual.
It was a stonewall penalty.
Lovren clearly and deliberately caused aggressive air turbulence behind Fred which sucked him off balance when he was in mid turn and about to shoot. Professional foul, red card, penalty.
Modric should have been booked for simulation after he deliberately headed Neymars lower arm.
I am shocked that anyone could suggest that a Japanese referee would favour Brazil. Its not like Brazil has the biggest Japanese population outside of Japan.
And before any smart arse asks, the fact that I had a stack of cash on Brazil last night has nothing to do with my comments.
