Am loving the football we are playing at the moment, confidence on the ball, comfortable in possesion, mclaren pulling the strings, full backs playing as wingers, link up with forward players, front 3 on fire, best I've seen since Denis smiths promotion team! Sorry to all the moaners for the positive thread but its just the way I feel

In the first half the passing didn't quite click and we lost possession too much, but in the second half we were treated to some really fantastic team football and best of all it wasn't a one off, but it seems to be the way we typically play football at the moment!

What I enjoyed was the 'we are about to score' feeling I got early in the second half. We came out and had wave after wave of pressure and you felt a goal was coming

It is great how the players looks so confident on the ball, and that confidence transmits to the fans. I am sat there at half time last night, not just hoping, but knowing that we would score at least once in the second half. I feel we can beat any team in this league when we are on our game.
(Still some moaners in the north stand everytime the ball goes back to Clarkey, but some people are impossible to please)

I notice that about keeping the ball, there's some clown near where I am that gets arsey if our back line has it for more than 5 seconds and doesn't believe the ball should go backwards. Keep the ball and be patient, we always lose it if we hoof and it's not exactly our strength is it.

Sorry to all the moaners for the positive thread but its just the way I feel Yes - it's really good. McLaren has made a big difference, as he is a different kind of midfielder. Puts his foot in, but - to his credit - is also a constructive player. Really good signing (if his legs can last a year or two) And Maclean is just the perfect frontman for our style of play. Quick-thinking, deft and aware of his team-mates. My worry is that we are doing the hard bit really well. Pass and move, create space by moving the ball quickly, pass the ball from the back (now Wright is back). These are all things that other League 2 sides find really hard to do. But... but.... but.... we cannot keep on winning if our set-piece play remains so bad. We WILL have off days (Southend at home?) and we still need to be able to grind out points in those circumstances. And if you concede consistently from set pieces, and never score from them, that ain't going to happen. It is amazing that wwe have constructed a 20 man squad without a single player (Mithcell Cole?) who can whip a ball in at pace. Almost every side we've played has managed this basic pro football task. Nor, without Creighton, do we have any player who can attack such a ball. And our defending at the set piece is abysmal. We look like conceding almost every time the ball comes into our six yard box. Not sure that anything can be done about this, either. It's a personnel issue. My suspicion is that this will hobble us, and mean we don't quite make the play-offs. Which would be such a shame, as on our day we are give or take the best footballing side around. My prediction at the start of the season was 5th; my best guess now would be upper mid-table. Which would be far from a disgrace, and definitely something to build on, but a waste of a great opportunity.

We have to be very careful that we dont fall into that Arsenal mentality of trying to pass the bloody ball to death and try to set up tap ins.
A few times last night, first half especially, I felt we could have pulled the trigger but chose another pass. Its great on the eye but the second half was much, much better. The ball was being moved about far quicker and full backs were bombing on and the midfielders were backing up the strikers.
We look a really difficult team to contain when we play at a high tempo because there is great energy about us. Peter Taylor said we get plenty of bodies forward and I thought this was the case last night too. When we sit back, player at a slower tempo and try and pass, pass, pass our way through it often breaks down.

Take on board your points Charlie.
But...but...but.... this is not a great division in terms of quality. I've seen nothing that scares me greatly. Chesterfield are clearly running away with it and one or two others can play some decent stuff i.e Wycombe and Gillingham and I still predict that Stevenage will come strong. They steam roller teams with their power and physicality. They wiped the floor with a decent Rotherham team and we still have to play Stevenage twice in what could prove to be pivotal games.
My fear is us going to places like Stockport and Morecambe and getting out muscled which is what Northampton did particularly well in the second half at Sixfields. They got into our faces and stopped us playing for long spells.
We are playing a brand of football that overall is great to watch and will produce goals.
Let's carry on, take every game as it comes, go for the three points and let's see what happens.

It is a pleasure to watch the U's in this form. I would like us to adopt more of a shoot on sight policy, we do seem to want to take that extra pass in front of goal, but that is a minor quibble. Mclean and McLaren bring a new dimension of skill and experience to the team that I haven't seen for a very long time. Bring on Cheltenham!
