This match from our first season in the Conference immediately followed the home draw with Dagenham that effectively ended any slim hopes we may still have had of winning the league. The hangover from that match was evident as a disheartened United team played out this dire 0-0 draw and we all started to look towards the playoffs and the possibility of a second season playing non-league football.

Early into the 07/08 season and we were already stuttering, suffering from playoff hangover, having gone down 2-1 away at Cambridge just days before this match. However, we came back from a goal down to win 2-1 with goals from Yemi Odubade and Gary Twigg (his third goal in three matches – and his last in an Oxford shirt). It was hoped after this match that we would kick on use this as a springboard to find some form, but alas it was not to be.

Later on in that same season and things had by this point gone seriously wrong. Now managed by the disastrous Darren Patterson we somehow managed to capitulate at home to Burton, shipping 3 goals and seeing James Clarke sent off for two yellows in front of a paltry crowd of just 4392.

An impressive home performance saw us take a two goal lead before being pegged back, but just about hanging on for the three points against a Burton side that would eventually go on to win the league. This was our third home win on the trot and it was this home form that enabled Patto to keep his job as long as he did. Notably, this was Little Sammy Deering's first league start. Burton, sitting in 6th after this match, immediately went on an incredible unbeaten run seeing them sitting on top of the league with a 17 point lead at the end of January.

The dramatic penultimate match of one of the most intense seasons the club has seen in recent years, we went away to Burton (who needed just a point to secure promotion to the Football League) needing a win to maintain our slim playoff hopes going into the final match, after facing a controversial 5 point deduction earlier in the season for fielding an ineligible player. Watched by a crowd of 6192 (a record at the Pirelli Stadium), and televised live on Setanta, Adam Chapman's free kick capped a perfect battling away performance to f*ck Burton's party up right under the nose of Brian Lee and to set up a nailbiting finale at home to Northwich on the final day of the season.

Notable as our first match back in the Football League after a 4 year absence, this was an unspectacular and unremarkable start back at this level. Neither side were able to penetrate on a day when defences were on top. Ryan Clarke was forced to make very few saves, but when Shaun Harrad managed to get his toe to the ball after half an hour he was alert to it, saving well and holding the ball. Oxford created very few chances but defended very well to get a good point away from home. A solid, but not particularly inspiring start to life back in the Football League.

After an awful run of results in the league, it was hoped that the FA Cup would serve as a welcome distraction. An experimental lineup made the trip to Burton only to be thoroughly outplayed throughout. However, despite this Burton seemed unable to break through the Oxford defence. When they finally did, late in the first half, the goal was disallowed for offside. If Oxford fans had hoped the side would be galvanised at half time they were wrong and the pattern of Burton's dominance but lack of goals continued in the second half. But just as the tie appeared to be heading for a replay, in the 85th minute Burton defender Aaron Webster headed in to knock us out in the first round.
