This was a highly anticipated match between two strong sides, with an in-form side that had won three of the last 4 (including a 9-1 demolition of Dorchester Town in the FA Cup) against third-placed Crewe. Oxford dominated the match, but the Crewe goalkeeper pulled off some remarkable saves to keep the score down to a respectable 1-0. David Rush was the only name on the scoresheet, looping the ball into the top corner. Some spectacular saves and remarkable misses followed, but we were unable to score any more while rarely being troubled at our own end. But a good day, having utterly dominated and outplayed a strong Crewe side.

For the penultimate match of the season we travelled to Crewe needing a win to keep up the pressure on second-placed Balckpool and to keep our hopes for automatic promotion alive and having just beaten Shrewsbury Town 6-0 a few days before, hopes were high. For some reason Crewe chose not to make the match all-ticket resulting in an Oxford invasion and an away end that was full to bursting over an hour before kickoff (as well as many more in the home end). Crewe also had hopes of promotion, sitting in 5th and in a playoff place. Paul Moody got the scoring underway with a powerful shot from the edge of the area. The score was doubled in the second half with a headed goal from Joey Beauchamp, but there was still time for late nerves as Crewe pulled a goal back, but fortunately we were able to hold on for the victory. Meanwhile, Blackpool had just been beaten 2-1 at home to Walsall, putting Oxford above them in second with just one game left.

A defeat away at newly-promoted Crewe stoked the by now familiar fears of relegation as potential relegation rivals picked up three points against us and moved above us in the table, bringing us one place closer to the dreaded relegation zone, this coming in the midst of an awful run of form, having not won for almost a month and failing to beat other strugglers such as Man City at home. Having taken the lead we then pushed the self-destruct button, conceding two soft goals (including a presumably rare goal from future Oxford 'favourite' Steve Anthrobus!) to hand Crewe the three points.

Having pulled ourselves away from the relegation scrap (albeit by just 5 points) and into 15th place, we played out a bore draw with midtable Crewe, as we squandered numerous chances and were unable to score despite totally dominating game. A disappointing result in a match where we really should have picked up 3 points.

After a bitterly disappointing home defeat to Stockport, a large Oxford following travelled to Crewe unbeaten away in the league and looking to kickstart the campaign. Crewe started the stronger side and we were soon in danger of being overrun in the opening minutes, but we soon began to work our way back into the match with the home fans quickly getting frustrated. It therefore came against the run of play when Crewe took the lead on 37 minutes, with the defence failing to deal with a corner in typical fashion. The Alex were in the ascendancy and soon went looking for a second, with Ryan Clarke being forced into a last-ditch save early in the second half. But, as in the first half, the lightweight Crewe soon started to be pushed back as we went looking for an equaliser and it finally came on 72 minutes, James Constable lashing in at the second attempt. But then Crewe struck back and thought they had scored a second when Clayton Donaldson struck the ball into the back of the net, but after protests from the Oxford players the goal was disallowed for striking an offside Crewe striker on the way in. Tempers flared and the match turned sour, with James Constable being sent off for a second yellow late on and Crewe manager Dario Gradi criticising the United management team in his post-match interview.
