Better a per-sport thread me thinks.

I thought the Argies looked pretty hot (and they're good at hockey). Incredibly physical team who took a very decent, potential medallist, Saffer team apart. Worrying.
The GB ladies got of to a decent start, played very well at times but i'd like to see more pressure for the entire game. Loved Walton's goal. Nasty stick-to-the-mouth injury to Kate Walsh, hospitalised.

Looking forward to saturday, never thought I'd go to another hockey match, last one was in Frankfurt 88, the day after England lost 3-0 to USSR in Euro88, only went to that as had nothing else to do, this time I aim to enjoy it with 2 of my sons. :-)

Is the women's hockey the only sport that it seems like the women are head and shoulders above the men?

Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio Z715e using proboards (women play football, ladies play hockey btw!) Both are ranked 4th in the world, but personally I reckon the ladies can beat anybody on their day. For the men to beat any of the three teams above them they would have to play very, very well. Not impossible, but a tough ask. Still, they seem to have some form, whereas the women cant buy luck right now.

I'd wager the Ladies do better than the boys in football.
And the birds have put 2 medals on the table, the boys NOWT !!

don't know much about hockey but watched a bit of the game yesterday and its a cracking sport to watch. Some great goals. It’s a better game to play. I’m a late convert (in my cough, cough, early forties) playing my first game ever this year, after watching my daughter play for a few years. I started with a few rush hockey sessions then played in the summer leagues (which are mixed). If anybody is looking for a bit of fitness then I’d definitely recommend rush hockey (in Oxford there are sessions @ Abingdon and Brookes - harcot hill). www.rushhockey.co.uk/wheretoplay.aspxI’ve played football (poorly!) for many years; hockey is definitely more athletic and technical. Also your opponents want to take you for a drink afterwards rather than start a punch up (5-a-side football leagues anyone?!). Much harder to get injured in rush hockey.

makes you realise how we neglect other sports due to our obsession with football
and when you look at the skill and technique in a sport like hockey and then compare it to the rubbish we watch week in week out and even at the top level our national side plays football with so little skill and creativity

Hockey and rowing are my favourite sports within the games and cycling would be up there if I could understand the tactics. I remember the 88 win and we all thought that the investment and participation would expand and make the game of hockey more universal. It did not happen unfortunately as we are all football or rugby obsessed in this country. Add cricket to that and I would guess that 90% of investment is in those 3 sports. It makes anything that we achieve in sports outside of those 3 even more remarkable and I for one appreciate those sportspeople more than I do the higher paid professionals in the main three. I have played hockey as well as football and rugby and Cheekoh is spot on with the increased emphasis placed on athleticism and technique.

I think there was a certain amount of investment that went on, but unfortunately I don't think it was spent that wisely. The National Hockey Stadium was built in the hope of creating a focal point but it was hardly ever used. It was mainly used for 5-a-side football followed by MK dons (before they got their Bletchley stadium). In the end England hockey said we never use this so sold it. Its now been flattened and is the new bright'n'shiny HQ for network rail. I believe MK Hockey club were asked if they wanted to be based their but they have quite a nice cosy pavilion shared with a local cricket team so didn't really want it either. There does seem to be a genuine second coming now, which is coinciding with an upturn in the fortunes of the national teams.

I laughed my head off at 0:39 when the Portsmouth player did a sarcastic dive to get his point across!

I laughed my head off at 0:39 when the Portsmouth player did a sarcastic dive to get his point across! I liked the Newcastle(?) player at about 1:20. Definitely taken out by a sniper, real cowboys and injuns childhood stuff. Still, the overall winner has to be the coach at 1:38 who blatantly head-buts the player, falls down dramatically leaving the player standing there looking bemused before he realises he should join in the falling down as well. I like football, but I cant watch 'top-level' stuff. Its just embarrassing. I grew up watching Briggs, Shotton and Billy Hamilton. I just don't see how any self respecting man can behave like that, there's less shame in cross dressing AFAIAC. Football I like, Blatter-Ball I hate.

Well, we keep winning but seem to loose a key player or two in the last five minutes of each game. Were screwed if Danson doesn't recover.

I was disappointed with the 5-3 bemoaning a disorganised defence but then watching both Argentina and Germany (second and third favourites) loose later on I was a bit more pragmatic. Before the game I honestly half expected the Argies to put 10 past USA but they made a very decent side look ordinary. You can’t underestimate any team in this competition.

Best I’ve seen them play last night, an intense performance. In fact that was probably one of the best ladies performances of the tournament. Shame the kiwis didn’t knock the lionesses out last night, we would have a nailed on medal chance then! Now we are going to have to throw our game against the Dutch so we don’t get the Argies in the semis (that’s allowed, right? )

I can’t call this competition. The Argentinians beat the saffers 7-1, USA beat the argies, and then the saffers beat USA 7-0. It seems anybody can beat anybody. Life would be easy if Japan beat the Chinese today, but Japan haven’t beaten anybody yet. So that just leaves GB to beat the best team in the world then, the Dutch who have won every game. It’s a tough ask but I would rule out one of the two happening.
(Btw, anybody in the MK area, the hockey club are showing the England game tonight if you want to watch with pint in hand)

There we go!!! Against the odds but in-line with the unpredictability of the tournament, Japan beat China (and played very well). Makes tonight's game a bit of a procession. GB are through to the semi's.
