Surprised as he seemed to be turning the corner. Although to be fair he has been there a fair while. Who next for Cambridge...Paul Wanless?

Seems odd to sack him after the transfer window. Perhaps he's being sacrificed after they sold Wilmott?

Bit of a fall guy as they just sell their best players, the chairman agreed to a 3 year plan on reduced finances with the manager. Then sacks him 1/2 way through despite an improvement.

Why sack the manager immediately after the transfer window has closed? The replacement is in no position to make changes.

It just shows what a precarious job football management is. It was only two or three years ago that Ling was doing a great job at Orient and being put forward for bigger jobs. I think he rejected Swindons approach among one or two others.
Same with Andy Scott, linked with Sheffield Utd a few weeks back and touted as a real up and coming boss but now his next job will probably be in the Conference. Mark Cooper another, he was back where he started a matter of weeks after getting a League 1 job.
Higher up you only have to look at the likes of Peter Taylor, Chris Coleman, Paul Ince and Ian Dowie to understand that once you get on that slippery slope its a long road back and will probably mean long spells outside your natural footballing environment before your managerial credibility is restored - if ever.
