Thanks Paul.
A good read as usual. Your report certainly ties in with what was said on RO. I read somebody suggesting that we were lucky, that it was a boring game, Henry is arrogant and doesn't produce and Henry, Ruffels don't have a creative bone in their bodies.
I was scratching my head having heard the RO commentary and as I almost always agree with your assessments of the game I feel a little more positive!

Altogether a more subdued report Paul. Did we play a better football or were Southend just not good enough to beat us?

I don't know who said that but I'd say that's utter nonsense. I've seen no evidence at all that Henry is arrogant. At times I really do wonder.

Agree. Listening to Radox was a bit of a nail biting affair for the last 15 minutes so I guess we got away with one! Now, if we can start doing that at home as well.

Great read and nice Dr Feelgood reference! Excellent read, Paul. Bit harsh to call the girl behind the bar at the Mawson's Micro pub an Olde Trout. Was she that ugly?

Whoops I had not read it like that at all. Unintentional. Was actually thinking of throwing in an Old Trout joke but couldn't think of one. For the record certainly not.

Thanks for your report Paul.
Southend is one of those 'never again' games for me so I dread the day their plans for a new ground come to fruition. I would say fair play to you for going to these godforsaken places every other week but then I think about what's on offer at our place, both football wise and facilities wise and can see it might actually be a relief!

I can see that point of view. However the atmosphere in the away end is usually very good and we've now discovered two very decent drinking establishments. Plus there's the company one travels with.

Southend’s ground is a museum piece but the atmosphere was very good on Saturday. Entertaining, feisty game, personally thought we were hanging on a bit at the end. Ricardinho looks like he is one of the oldest footballers ever seen- but he’s still too good for L1 .
I shall call him Sir Stan from now on. - that’s Matthews not Collymore.
Decent report as usual by Mr B. I actually thought the ref was halfway acceptable as well - makes a change.

I’m surprised you didn’t pay a visit to the Rochford beer festival, just two stops before Prittlewell.

I usually read your reports as much for the reports on good pubs and ales as for the football. We chose the Old Trout Tavern which seemed a friendly joint with a couple of well kept low gravity beers at very reasonable prices. The only other Oxford fans in there were two guys we met on the train from Fenchurch Street who had asked us where we would be drinking in town. The micro pub you mention sounds interesting and will give it a go next time. As for the match, I was happy to settle for a point. While there are some away draws, like my last match seen at MK Dons, where you felt it could have gone either way late on, this was backs to the wall for the last ten minutes or so. Fortunately they lacked a prolific striker and the best chance of the whole game probably fell to Ruffels on the stroke of half time.

Surprised there wasn`t a mention of their numerous "run ins" with the Inland Revenue and effective cheating of the financial rules that seem to happen almost annually. As "clubs I hate" they are in the top 3 !
Aside from that.... nice report.

This is one of those glass half full half empty things. If you believe we are heading for the play offs then it was a poor point. If you believe we are being dragged into a relegation fight then it was an excellent point.

If you believe we are being dragged into a relegation fight then it was an excellent point. Not sure what it has to do with the play offs or relegation fight (seriously??) Southend have not lost at home all season. We have a terrible record there. It is a good point. Does anybody seriously think that we 'are being dragged into a relegation fight'? I reckon we are talking serious pessimists/ glass three quarters empty. We are effectively a half way team. 50 points is the maximum likely to be required to stay up (it may be less than that) so we would need 23 points from 26 games To date we have 27 points from 20 games We would have to do a hell of a lot worse in the second half of the season to come anywhere near relegation. Madness to think this way.

If you believe we are being dragged into a relegation fight then it was an excellent point. At the moment I don't believe we're heading into the play-offs nor do I believe we are being dragged into a relegation fight. So no way can I work out how much is in my glass. On the value of the point - well it's a point, same value as if we'd won it at Wigan or Plymouth (where we won) or Bury (where we lost). But if pressed I'd say a very good point to come away with and one which our play just about merited.

Considering our record at Southend, that we went behind and that we are on a poor run at the moment then that was a good point, add in that Southend are decent at home and we have injury problems and I would say very good.
It sent us into a two week break from league fixtures not on the back of a loss, added to the points total in a season which given our mid table position in a tight league has the potential to go anywhere yet, so every point is useful fighting against the worst possible scenario.
We have taken four points in the last two away games now, so reversed the slump we had hit on our travels, obviously we are still as bad as ever at the Kassam, making Doncaster in a week and a half a big game, but while we have our usual Autumn/Winter poor home run picking up points away is vital.
We won't make the play offs this season, all but the most hopeful of fans will acknowledge that, so the next best thing is to stay away from the relegation battle, an away point at Southend is decent in that regard.
