He was one of those players I disliked in the 80's, (like Mark Hughes etc) dunno why, he just irritated me, then he joined us, I couldn't believe it, I warmed to him a little in the end.

He was on a fortune at Oxford, that's why he came,he was on £2,500pw. In 91, Durnin,Magilton and Simpson were on £1,500 PW,alongside Foster,it's no surprise we nearly went bust.
Rages view on him,
" he will be remembered more at United for being less than very good. United declined under his captaincy, and he became quite unpopular with the London Road"

Got a photo with him when I was mascot. And the 50p he let me keep from kick off. Back in the days when their shorts were rather to small

I liked him as a player, but met him a couple of times and thought he was a knob.

He drank/drinks in a wine bar my daughter worked behind the bar in Brighton - she said he was a nice guy and particularly liked him when one of his wealthy mates - I guess trying to impress everyone - tipped her £300!!

Very good header of the ball but hoofed it far too often. Could tackle ok but struggled with a straight forward pass. £2.5k a week then is the equivalent of approximately £6k in today's money. Crazy money for a average player. Yep, it's no wonder we were in such a mess. £1.5k for lager, mags and Simmo were fairer wages. Class players. Especially Simmo. On his day he was every bit as good as joey. Loved him!

Shows how much wages have increased in the championship/English football though, £6,000 a week would be nothing to write home about at that level now, I heard Chey Dunkley is on £6,500 a week at Wigan in league one while Wolves are paying massive money at the top of the second tier. If we ever get back up to what should still be called the second division we will find it a very different place after such a lengthy absence. Foster was the centre half when I was first able to go to the Manor on my own at the grand old age of ten, even at that young age if a lot went over my head I was able to pick up that, on the right hand side of the London road at least, he was considered a pile of shite.

One of my favourite players of that time, I think he was one of the most skillful players to play for us. I don't remember Steve Foster being unpopular with the supporters, but it was a long time ago!

I thought Byrne went because of family issues. Perhaps it was a driving ban. Steve Foster definitely had his own driver.

I thought Byrne went because of family issues. Perhaps it was a driving ban. Steve Foster definitely had his own driver. Not 100% sure about the ban, but family problems certainly. I used to regularly bump into him at Sainsbury's at West Hove. He went back to Oxford when he was training for his physiotherapy qualification (or something similar). He said there was one particular player who used to think he was a cut above other players would tell him about, and was really disliked around the club.
Have no idea if true or not.
