A really good interview and Pep seems realistic. Still clearly learning but open and honest as far as one can assume.

Likes the Oxford away fans/ support better than home fans!!
Reading between the lines I'd say he knows we won't make the play-offs this season.

I can understand that as generally away from home it is constant singing and you don’t get the moaning. I also think it is a sensible approach to not set a target of finishing in play offs etc. Like in MApps first season it is a case of building a side that can compete for promotion next season.

He has said pretty much from day one that the aim this season was to build for next year, even before we'd kicked a ball he'd said that, so I don't think he's realised we're not good enough, I just think when he came in him and Darryl would have mapped out their plans and seen this year as a year to build and next year to really be the one where we go for it
I don't think that means he doesn't think we can go up this year, and i'm sure he won't be too upset if we do manage it, but he's very reserved generally, and it's no surprised he's got this outlook

It also suggest DE said about promotion this year as he thought that’s what fans wanted to hear. That IMO is a dangerous game as it gives fans unrealistic expectations and with our fans that can back fire.

He’s just managing expectations.
There’s no way that DE doesn’t expect us to finish in the playoffs, given the wages we appear to be spending.
I’ll be disappointed if we don’t, too.

It is OK suggesting that we build for next season but there are a number of players out of contract either at the end of the season or at the end of the following season (some we will want money for)
So the contract negotiations are important or we will have further Johnson/ Lundstrom player sales at the end of the season.
What Pep says is a little different from what DE has implied at the start of the season.
